Volodymyr Zelensky appoints new Commander-in-Chief amid intensifying drone warfare

On Tuesday, after days of protests opposing the dismissal of Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Fedorov’s main rival, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
He appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi, who is considered an ally of Fedorov, as the new Commander-in-Chief. Fedorov welcomed Drapatyi’s appointment as a “breath of fresh air,” bringing “new hope.”
The appointment of Drapatyi marks Zelensky’s second change of his Commander-in-Chief in a little over two years.
In early 2024, Zelensky fired Valery Zaluzhnyi, an admirer of Ukrainian fascist Stepan Bandera, who was extremely well connected in the country’s far right, as well as Washington, Berlin and London. Zaluzhnyi now serves as Ukrainian ambassador to the UK.
Zelensky dismissed Zaluzhnyi’s replacement, Syrskyi, after days of protests in Kiev and other major Ukrainian cities, dominated by pro-war veterans and layers of the middle class. The removal of Syrskyi was one of the main demands of the protesters.
It is also all but certain that leading NATO officials raised this demand behind closed doors. The Guardian reported that Zelensky’s dismissal of Fedorov had “startled” European officials.
It also drew criticism from influential Ukrainian politicians such as Vitaly Klitchko, who played a prominent role in the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev.
According to the Financial Times, Zelensky has tried to convince Fedorov to rejoin his cabinet in another capacity. So far, however, Fedorov has rejected his proposals, insisting that he would only return as Defense Minister.
In the conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi, the Western press clearly sided with Fedorov. Outlets such as The Guardian and the Financial Times depicted Syrskyi as a representative of the “old guard” within the Ukrainian military, with Soviet-era methods and conceptions of warfare.
The 35-year-old Fedorov, by contrast, has been hailed as “Ukraine’s Drone Warfare Mastermind” by the New York Times. The New York Times suggested that the conflict between Syrskyi and Fedorov escalated after the latter blocked purchases of artillery ammunition in favor of drones.
Drapatyi is widely seen to be in favor of Fedorov’s approach to the war, centered on the growing use of long-range drones that hit infrastructure and civilian targets deep within Russian territory.
In recent months, such long-range drone strikes have increased dramatically to an average of 300-350 per day, according to Kiev. These strikes have been made possible by AI-assisted Hornet attack drones.
At $5,000, Hornet drones are much less expensive than conventional missiles but can carry 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of explosives for some 200 kilometers (124 miles). The Hornet system was developed and is sold by the US defense tech company Swift Beat.
Swift Beat is owned by Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, who has long been highly connected with US intelligence, the Democratic Party and the military-industrial complex.
A report in Defense News suggested that Schmidt was personally involved in the development of the Hornet system.
In an indication that the US was in favor of Drapatyi, Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the D.C.-based Foreign Policy Research Institute, endorsed Drapatyi ahead of his appointment, stating, “Given his experience, reputation, and emphasis on reforms, Drapatyi would be an excellent choice as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces.” The Instagram page of the Right Sector, one of Ukraine’s most influential neo-Nazi organizations with a substantial presence in the military, endorsed Drapatyi’s appointment as well.
Drapatyi’s rise within the Ukrainian military has been entirely bound up with the NATO-backed war against Russia. His first major deployment came in 2014, after the coup in Kiev and the annexation of Crimea set off a civil war in East Ukraine.

In the following years, Drapatyi continued to climb up the military ladder. He served as deputy to the General Staff and as commander of Ukraine’s ground forces.
In this capacity, Drapatyi played a central role in the Ukrainian invasion of Russia’s Kursk region. The invasion ended in a military debacle, and Drapatyi was eventually forced to resign his post as Infantry Commander.
This part of his biography has been conveniently omitted in the Western coverage of Drapatyi. Nevertheless, his involvement is indicative of his alignment with those sections of Ukraine’s military and state apparatus that favor an aggressive development of military strikes, be it with drones or with ground troops, on civilian and energy infrastructure within the Russian Federation.
The strikes have targeted, in particular, oil refineries, triggering a severe fuel shortage in Russia, one of the world’s largest oil producers.
Earlier this week, the Russian government officially began importing oil to address the fuel shortages, which have forced thousands to wait in lines for fuel, for hours, sometimes even days.
Fedorov was also a key figure in the recent targeting of Crimea’s infrastructure, which has led to major blackouts and fuel shortages. Increasingly, these strikes also openly target civilian and general economic infrastructure.
Over the weekend, at least seven workers were killed and dozens injured in drone strikes on warehouses of Russia’s online retail giant Wildberries.
Many of the workers were trapped in the warehouse when it was hit by drones and set on fire. Wildberries, which functions much like Amazon, delivers household goods, clothing and other items to millions of households but also to Russian soldiers on the front lines.
In the two days since Drapatyi’s appointment, Ukraine has continued its strikes on targets within Russia.
On Wednesday, a drone hit yet another Wildberries warehouse. The pro-Western Russian outlet Meduza reported that 10 percent of Wildberries’ warehouse space, including the commodities stored there, have now been destroyed by Ukrainian drones.
In a rare admission of the impact of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia’s economy, the Kremlin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged, “The situation is indeed difficult because of the losses suffered both by the company [Wildberries] itself and by representatives of small- and medium-sized businesses” whose goods were destroyed.
The Kremlin has not released figures about the growing death toll of these strikes, but, based on Russian reports, it is likely that this year hundreds of civilians have been killed, if not more.
In the night from July 22 to July 23 alone, 18 regions in Russia were hit by drone strikes. At least two people died in drone attacks on Crimea; a 3-year-old was killed in the Voronezh region; and one man was killed in the Belgorod region.
Also on Wednesday, July 22, two people, including one young girl, died in a hospital in the Krasnodar region from injuries suffered during drone strikes.
In addition to the growing civilian death toll on the Russian side, Ukrainian drones are now also responsible for by far the largest share of Russian casualties on the battlefield.
Russia has responded with an intensification of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. On Thursday, Russia hit the port infrastructure and drone industry facilities in the city of Odessa.
The U.N. Human Rights Office has recorded 1,396 civilian deaths in Ukraine for the first six months of 2026, a 37 percent increase compared to the first half of 2025.

Iran has managed to rebuild infrastructure damaged in US and Israeli airstrikes faster than expected, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing satellite imagery of several Iranian military sites.
In one instance, the Wall Street Journal noted that satellite imagery from Planet Labs in March showed two tunnel entrances to a reported Iranian missile base, and the adjoining access road that had been damaged by airstrikes near Kangavar in western Iran.
According to the Wall Street Journal, satellite imagery accessed through Airbus weeks later showed freshly excavated entrances and a paved road where the destruction had been.

Strict ‘No Drone Zone’ in Effect During Comic-Con International 2026

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)—in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS), the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department (HPD), and the San Diego Police Department (SDPD)—wants to remind everyone of the rules forbidding drone use during Comic-Con International 2026.
A “No Drone Zone” is in place throughout the duration of the event, which runs from July 24 through July 26, with restrictions centered around the San Diego Convention Center and including the Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, parts of Coronado, the bridge, and more.
The FAA established this temporary flight restriction (TFR) under regulation 99.7 for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, for the three-day event from 9:30 a.m. PDT Friday, July 24, through 7:00 p.m. PDT Sunday, July 26.
The restriction covers a 1-nautical-mile radius around the area up to 400 feet in altitude for the public’s safety and security.

Drone operators should check for active flight restrictions using an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider. These free tools provide near real-time information on TFRs and restricted airspace.
Most drones operating in U.S. airspace are required to broadcast Remote ID. Disabling or failing to comply with Remote ID requirements is a separate federal violation and can result in additional penalties. Authorities use multiple detection methods, whether Remote ID is broadcasting or not.
The FBI, FAMS, and FAA work with other partners to enforce TFRs using authorized counter-drone tools to detect and stop unauthorized drone activity under the SAFER SKIES Act. Personnel are in place at event venues with trained state and local partners like the San Diego Police Department.
Drone operators identified as being in violation of one or more federal regulations will be referred to the FAA for investigation.
The FAA has recently strengthened its enforcement priorities, and any drone that poses a danger to the public, operates in restricted airspace, or is used in furtherance of a crime will trigger mandatory enforcement action.
Unauthorized operators could face drone confiscation, revocation of pilot certificates and civil fines of up to $75,000 per violation. In addition, law enforcement agencies may pursue criminal penalties, including fines up to $100,000 and up to one year in federal prison.

A UFO expert has claimed the USA has reams of "vastly more consequential" evidence which is yet to be released as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE).
President Donald Trump's government is shining a light on decades of sightings of unidentified flying objects by releasing documents through the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) with believers and sceptics all combing through the piles of proof which have been made public in a series of four document dumps.
The releases have featured photos, videos and reports from agencies including the FBI, the CIA, and NASA, and Dr Steven Greer, founder of The Disclosure Project and the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is convinced there are more shocking revelations yet to come.
He told the Daily Mail newspaper: "My understanding is that they've been advised to go slow on it, and to only release fairly much inconsequential material. I don't agree with that strategy …
"The archive we have, it's 36 years of accumulated evidence and whistleblower testimony and videos and photos and documents and government documents from all over the world, is vastly more consequential than what they released in these last four tranches."
Greer went on to insist he's calling for more files to be released, adding: "We're trying to make sure that the public and also the political leaders have access to more material than they're seeing through these Department of War and White House releases to date.''
However, he believes it may take years for the most crucial files to be made available to the public but he hopes it will happen close to the end of the Trump administration in 2028/29.
He told the publication: "I think more will be coming. I think they're trying to do a slow roll, stretching out towards the end of the Trump administration.''
It comes after NASA administrator Jared Isaacman claims the agency has "captured imagery" of unexplained phenomena in space which could point towards the existence of aliens and UFOs.
Speaking to podcast host Jack Gordon, Isaacman explained: "We have captured imagery, and this is what President Trump is very forward-leaning about, that based on the data that we have within that imagery, we don't know what it is.
"I think there's a very real possibility we're going to arrive at a conclusion in our lifetime that perhaps there's life everywhere out there and that it isn't as infrequent as we might think it to possibly be."
Isaacman did not shed any light on what the images might contain but they are said to show unexplainable objects close to Earth that can't be identified as comets or any other natural phenomenon.
He also insisted he's never seen any evidence of crashed UFOs on Earth or alien bodies said to have been recovered by the US government, but he believes there is life out there.
Isaacman added he believes samples from Mars will prove there's life on the red planet, adding: "We've got samples on Mars right now. If we bring them back, there is a very high probability that they will point to, at some point, microbial life at least on Mars."
He added of exploring the possibility of extraterrestrial life: "I can't hate the subject. In fact, I'm incredibly fascinated about it because that is at the heart of what we're trying to do at NASA - answer the question, are we alone?"

Filmmaker Sean Stone says truly operational alien-style anti-gravity propulsion would erase trillions from the global oil economy and help explain decades of UFO secrecy.
Sean Stone has claimed that truly operational alien-style anti-gravity propulsion would wipe out 'trillions of dollars' in global oil and gas value overnight, arguing in a new interview that this economic time bomb is a key reason governments have kept UFO technology under wraps.
The filmmaker and author, son of Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, set out his case while promoting his latest projects and reflecting on two decades spent probing what he sees as the outer fringes of official disclosure.
Stone revisited some of his most striking alleged encounters, from a night shoot at Utah's notorious Skinwalker Ranch to a quiet, late drive home through Beverly Hills.
Stone, who once co-hosted Conspiracy Theory with former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura's son Tyrell, has long positioned himself at the junction of fringe research and pop culture, operating well outside the boundaries of conventional science or mainstream journalism.
None of his claims has been independently verified, and there is no public evidence that governments possess usable anti-gravity craft.
Sean Stone and a 'Great Awakening' on UFOs
Stone frames the surge of interest in UFOs and UAPs as part of what he calls a broader 'great awakening.'
In his view, social media and podcasts have broken the old gatekeeping model in which a handful of newsrooms decided what counted as respectable conversation.
'Every one of us is a host, every one of us can host our platform, can host our information, can offer the insights and the news that we think is relevant and important,' he said, adding that this shift began in the years just before Covid but 'Covid made it explode.'
Stone argues that repeated testimony has slowly normalised what used to be dismissed as pub talk or tabloid fodder. When there is just one witness, he said, the story sounds 'nuts.'
When there are many, some people start listening. It is not an entirely original observation, but it does capture something about the internet age: enough repetition can make almost anything feel, if not true, then at least familiar.
Sean Stone's Night at Skinwalker Ranch
Stone's most unnerving episode, in his telling, unfolded at Skinwalker Ranch in Utah, a site steeped in Native American lore and more recent tales of shapeshifters, strange lights and aggressive 'entities.'
The visit took place during filming for Conspiracy Theory, when he joined Tyrell Ventura to explore the property's fenced boundary.
Ignoring the 'No Trespassing' signs, Stone said he hopped the fence and almost immediately felt as if he had been hit by an invisible force.
'I felt something almost like an energy weapon,' he recalled. 'It was like a hot, buzzing, tingling feeling on my leg. And I was like, what the hell is going on? So I just ran back and jumped back over the fence.'
Later that night, the pair returned. Stone remembered hearing a heavy, rhythmic thudding from above but, as he tells it, he never thought to look up. When the sound stopped, he turned to Tyrell, who was staring at the sky. 'He goes, did you see that? And I was like, no, I heard it.'

According to Stone, Tyrell then described a diamond-shaped object that appeared in the air, hovered silently, rolled onto its side, emitted light and then 'zipped off really fast.'
Stone categorised the phenomenon as 'more extra-dimensional,' and said he did not think it was 'necessarily our government craft.
Roswell, Reverse Engineering and Anti-Gravity
Pressed on whether he has personally seen a UFO, Stone drew a distinction. 'I've seen craft (but) I've never seen an alien in physical form,' he said.
One sighting, he claimed, took place over Los Angeles at around 2am as he drove through Beverly Hills. A low-flying object passed overhead, 'quiet' and with no visible propulsion.
'It was not designed like any plane,' he said, adding that it moved 'quietly and fast' before disappearing.
Stone leans into one of the most persistent stories in UFO lore: that the 1947 Roswell incident involved a genuine extraterrestrial crash and that US authorities quietly harvested and reverse-engineered its technology.
He cited the late Army intelligence officer Philip Corso, whose son he has met, and who alleged that mid-20th-century advances in materials and electronics drew on captured alien hardware.
Those claims have been heavily disputed for decades and never proven, but Stone treats them as essentially accurate.
'My understanding of how these things work, it's almost as if there is an interface between consciousness and the machine,' he said, describing what sounds closer to metaphysics than engineering.
In the same breath, he nodded to British hacker Gary McKinnon's claims of secret 'cigar-shaped craft' and whispered rumours of triangular 'TR-3' vehicles, likening them to super-advanced stealth bombers.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he said, if someone had glimpsed a stealth bomber they would have called it a UFO.
None of these programmes has ever been acknowledged by the US government, and McKinnon's claims remain uncorroborated, leaving Stone's references squarely in the realm of allegation.
Sean Stone on Why Anti-Gravity Would Upend Oil
The heart of Stone's argument is economic rather than cosmic. If Roswell was real, if anti-gravity propulsion truly exists, and if it can be commercialised, he believes the fallout for the fossil fuel sector would be devastating.

In his estimate, the hit to the existing world order would be measured in 'trillions of dollars globally.'
It is, to put it gently, a radical chain of ifs. Still, the logic is straightforward enough. A propulsion system that does not need combustion would, in theory, sideline petrol, diesel, jet fuel and perhaps even much of the power sector.
The companies, governments and investors whose balance sheets depend on those commodities might reasonably be twitchy. Whether that fear has actually driven a decades-long cover-up is another matter, for which Stone offers no documentary proof.
He is channelling those beliefs into new work. His forthcoming documentary Greystone, he said, will force viewers to choose between dismissing him as a fabulist or quietly admitting they have had similar experiences.

A decades-old UFO mystery has gained fresh attention after a retired Los Alamos National Laboratory insider reportedly confirmed a crucial detail connected to the controversial Admiral Wilson documents.
The claim centres on Oak Shannon, a former special projects manager and nuclear physicist, who said Admiral Thomas R. Wilson contacted him to ask whether scientist Eric Davis could be trusted.
Alleged Pentagon UFO Cover-up Document
The so-called Admiral Wilson documents, also known as the Eric Davis Notes, describe an alleged conversation between Dr Eric W. Davis and retired US Navy Admiral Thomas R. Wilson.
The notes reportedly detail a meeting where Wilson discussed his attempts to gain access to a highly restricted programme involving alleged non-human technology.
Wilson was not an ordinary military official. He served as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency between 1999 and 2002 and held some of the highest intelligence positions in the US defence system.
Because of his background, the central question raised by the documents is whether even senior intelligence officials could be blocked from accessing certain classified programmes.
According to the notes, Wilson allegedly discovered a programme managed by a private contractor and was informed that he did not have the required 'need to know'.
If accurate, the claim would suggest an extreme level of secrecy inside the US national security structure. If inaccurate, it would represent a highly unusual fabrication involving individuals with significant scientific and military backgrounds.
Oak Shannon Provides a Missing Link
For years, one of the biggest questions surrounding the notes involved Oak Shannon.
His name appeared in the documents, with the notes claiming that Wilson contacted him before speaking with Davis.
The purpose of the call was reportedly to determine whether Davis was trustworthy.
The podcast claims that researchers eventually located Shannon and interviewed him about the alleged conversation. During the interview, Shannon confirmed that Wilson did contact him and asked about Davis.
Shannon explained that he knew both men through professional circles and believed Davis was a reliable scientist. He said, 'I vouched for him.' According to the podcast, this matched a detail already written in the disputed notes.
Another point highlighted was Shannon's health condition at the time. The notes allegedly mentioned that Shannon was experiencing health problems and that his wife Linda was handling his calls.
Pentagon Secrecy Claims Face New Scrutiny
The wider allegations connected to the Wilson documents involve special access programmes, a highly classified category used by governments to protect sensitive projects.
Some programmes can operate with limited visibility, creating debates about how much oversight exists over certain defence activities.
The podcast argues that the alleged Wilson conversation suggests a programme could have existed outside the awareness of even powerful officials. It claims that Wilson's position as DIA director did not guarantee access to every classified project.
However, no public evidence has conclusively proven that a secret programme involving recovered non-human technology exists. The claims remain disputed, with researchers, officials and sceptics offering different interpretations of the documents.
Admiral Wilson has previously denied the alleged meeting described in the notes. His response has remained one of the key points debated by those investigating the documents.

Groundbreaking astronomer connects missing stars to 1952 UFOs

Astronomer and associate professor at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics Beatriz Villarroel was always fascinated with mysterious phenomena in the night sky, with a series of events taking place 74 years ago this month.
Her thesis question was simple: Can a star vanish?
Her research was heavily influenced by a July 1952 news conference from the Air Force addressing UFOs over Washington, D.C., and even the White House.
“Of this great mass reports, we have been able adequately to explain the great bulk of them, explain them to our own satisfaction.
We’ve been able to explain them as hoaxes, as erroneously identified, friendly aircraft as meteorological or electronic phenomena, or as light aberrations.
However, there have been a certain percentage of this volume of reports that have been made by credible observers of relatively incredible things.
It is this group of observations that we now are attempting to resolve,” Air Force Major General John Samford said.
This “UFO Flap,” as it came to be known, was most prominent over two consecutive weekends in July 18–19 and July 26–27, 1952.
Years later, while working on a project, Villarroel noticed that bright stars that should be there were no longer present on plates following the UFO flap.
She explains she found “transient stars” on the same weeks that DC was overflown, but didn’t realize the significance at the time until she began comparing photographic plates before and after the July 1952 event, despite efforts from administrators to destroy the plates.
A number of other researchers have come out in support of some of Villarroel’s findings, following the publication of her peer-reviewed study authored with another astronomer.
She continues her work as Villarroel is currently part of a review of the NASA archives working with the Disclosure Foundation to search of unidentified aerial phenomena.
