Iran unleashes wave of attacks on US bases

Sirens blared in Bahrain as Iranian drones reportedly struck the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet

The Iranian military has attacked US bases in multiple Gulf states, and warned locals to keep their distance from “US terrorist army forces” in anticipation of more strikes. The attacks came immediately after US forces bombed the Iranian cities of Ahvaz, Khorramabad, and Jask.

Sirens sounded twice in Bahrain on Friday morning, as two waves of attacks targeted Sheikh Isa Air Base and Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

“This morning, the fuel tanks, large equipment warehouses and silos, and the barracks of the US terrorist army forces at the Isa Air Base in Bahrain were targeted by Arash kamikaze drones,” the Iranian Army said in a statement broadcast on Iranian state media. In a separate statement, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that it had damaged an observation tower at Naval Support Activity Bahrain.

Both facilities have come under Iranian attack on multiple occasions since the US-Israeli war on Iran began in February. Footage shared on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the area of the naval base after the second round of sirens sounded.

The Iranian army also confirmed striking Camp Buehring, Camp Doha and Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, as well as “aircraft hangars, aviation maintenance hangars and a barracks” at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The IRGC said that it inflicted casualties on American personnel in an attack on Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

Iranian-linked forces also attacked a base hosting US personnel in Erbil, Iraq, according to the Associated Press.

Bahrain and Kuwait secretly sent their own jets to carry out attacks inside Iran earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. These previously unreported missions could explain why Iran focused almost all of its firepower on these two counties on Friday, as it did against the UAE in response to Emirati jets striking its Lavan Island refinery in April.

The US and Iran have traded tit-for-tat strikes for 13 consecutive nights, since a tentative ceasefire collapsed earlier this month. Between Thursday night and Friday morning, US forces bombed multiple locations in central and southern Iran, including Ahvaz, Khorramabad near the Iraqi border, and the port city of Jask. At least four people were killed and five injured in US missile attacks on Ahvaz, local authorities said.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that command centers, drone sites, telecommunications towers, coastal surveillance sites, and naval assets were targeted in order to “further diminish the threat Iran poses to civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Wednesday that any US aggression would be met with a “decisive response.”

“Our defense doctrine is clear: eye for an eye. Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response,” he wrote on social media.

Iran has long held that the presence of the US military endangers the Gulf states. “We warn the general public in countries where American soldiers are stationed to immediately stay out of a radius of 500 meters from the places where American soldiers are hiding, in order to be safe,” the IRGC said in a statement on Friday.

Bangladesh president resigns

Bangladesh’s president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, has resigned, citing health issues. The speaker of the National Parliament will now become the country’s interim president until a new person is elected.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad confirmed Shahabuddin’s resignation at a press briefing on Friday evening. In his resignation letter submitted to the speaker, Shahabuddin said that he was suffering from several health conditions.

He said he was diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy and that he occasionally loses consciousness for brief periods as a result of this illness.

Reports said Shahabuddin received treatment at the Combined Military Hospital over the past two days.

Shahabuddin’s resignation comes much ahead of the official end of his tenure in April 2028. The president’s office in Bangladesh is largely ceremonial.

Shahabuddin, 76, was ⁠elected unopposed for a five-year term in 2023 as a nominee of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party.

The resignation assumes significance as Hasina has announced that she would return to Bangladesh in December.

In November 2025, a Bangladeshi court sentenced Hasina to death in absentia for her role in a violent crackdown on protesters that led to her ouster.

Shahabuddin, who remained in office after Hasina fled to India in August 2024, oversaw a transition that first saw a caretaker administration led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus.

Elections held this past February propelled Bangladesh National Party’s Tarique Rahman to power. Hasina’s Awami League, which is now banned, was not allowed to participate.

A Reuters report quoting three sources said that the Tarique Rahman government had pressed Shahabuddin to step aside because of his long-standing ties to Hasina.

Russia just escalated against Western backers of Ukraine in a big way. On Friday a major Russian missile strike was carried out in Kyiv Oblast where representatives of Ukraine's defense industry had gathered for a demonstration event.

These types of defense tech gatherings occur semi-frequently, are somewhat secretive, and typically involve American and European defense companies demonstrating new weapons systems, particularly in the realm of drone warfare. These events also sometimes involve the Ukrainians showing off their own advancing capabilities to international customers.

So bottom line is that in targeting the event, Russia is strongly signaling it is willing to strike locations known to potentially have Western officials present. It may be lashing out after the US reportedly agreed (tentatively at least) to give Ukraine licensing rights to produce its own Patriot missile defense shield.

The Friday ballistic missile strike near the Ukrainian capital killed 10 people and injured almost 100 others.

The timing is interesting given the attack came a mere day President Volodymyr Zelensky met nearby with with senior representatives of Raytheon, the US company that produces Patriot air defense systems. Raytheon has yet to provide public comment or confirm whether any of its representatives were at the event. The Thursday delegation was headed by Raytheon Vice President Joseph DeAntona.

However, an anonymous senior congressional official and an unnamed Trump administration official told the outlet that DHS had instead disbursed most of that funding toward security for World Cup matches, America’s 250th anniversary festivities and other major U.S. sporting events.

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz notched the $170 million in the OBBB Act for “maritime domain awareness” technology programs that can be utilized to track Chinese vessels, Punchbowl News reported. Cruz told the outlet that he has “sought to provide resources for those programs, but unfortunately the bulk of the funding has not gone where it needed to go.”
