Tranquility and Serenity
The Seas of Tranquility and Serenity are calm today. They're calm most every day though, since they are actually lunar maria, ancient lava flows filling in large impact basins on the Moon. Also known by Latin names Mare Tranquillitatis (right) and Mare Serenitatis, the smooth dark lunar "seas" are in stark contrast to the bright cratered lunar highlands surrounding them in this telescopic view. Of course their names are based on the historical, pre-telescopic designations of lunar maria. Easily visible to the unaided eye, the broad features on the Moon's near side were imagined to be like the expansive oceans of planet Earth. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle touched down on the Mare Tranquillitatis (at lower right), establishing Tranquility base and the first human presence on the Moon.

Alien Probes Hiding in Our Solar System: Study Reveals Hidden Technosignatures in Asteroid Belt

A recent study has renewed discussion about whether advanced extraterrestrial civilisations could leave detectable technosignatures within our own Solar System, including in the asteroid belt.
In the paper, researcher Alex Ellery proposes on the possibility that non-human technology may already be embedded within largely unexamined regions of our own cosmic backyard.
Interest in extraterrestrial life has also remained high following recent US government disclosures on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), although officials have repeatedly said those records do not constitute evidence of extraterrestrial activity.
They did, however, document repeated encounters with objects exhibiting flight characteristics beyond known human engineering, observed by military personnel and logged across multiple agencies.
Alien Probes In Solar System: Why The Asteroid Belt Matters
Ellery's study argues that if an advanced civilisation wanted to monitor Earth, deploying large spacecraft would be inefficient and conspicuous.
A quieter approach, he suggests, would involve self-replicating probes positioned in locations humans rarely examine closely, including the asteroid belt, lunar craters, or even interstellar objects passing through the solar system.
The asteroid belt, in particular, offers an appealing hiding place. It is vast, cluttered, and still only partially mapped in detail. Objects within it vary widely in composition and trajectory, making anomalies harder to spot.
According to Ellery, such probes could theoretically mine asteroids for raw materials, replicate themselves, and operate autonomously over long timescales.
He notes that evidence may not appear as obvious structures or signals, but as subtle 'technosignatures,' chemical or isotopic traces left by advanced engineering processes.
Ellery argues some signatures could potentially be overlooked because current asteroid surveys are not specifically designed to identify artificial technosignatures.
Hidden Technosignatures And The Limits Of Detection
The concept of hidden technosignatures reflects a broader shift in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Traditional efforts have focused on detecting deliberate signals, radio transmissions, laser pulses, anything that looks like a greeting.
Increasingly, some researchers have proposed the opposite possibility, that advanced civilisations may avoid detection altogether.
Instead of looking for something loud and obvious, such hypotheses suggest researchers could also search for anomalous physical or chemical signatures rather than deliberate communications.

The so-called 'Wow! signal,' detected in 1977, matched expectations for an interstellar transmission but was never repeated or definitively explained.
More recently, unusual stellar behaviour, such as the dimming observed in KIC 8462852, prompted speculation before later being attributed to dust clouds after years of study.
Ellery's proposal fits within this pattern. It does not claim definitive proof, only that existing observational frameworks may be too narrow.
Military Sightings And A Growing Pattern
Although unrelated to Ellery's hypothesis, recent UAP disclosures have contributed to renewed public interest in unexplained aerial phenomena.
Official records released by US agencies, including the Department of Defense and NASA, document dozens of unexplained aerial encounters.
In one reporting period, authorities resolved 49 cases as ordinary objects such as balloons or drones, while recommending 243 more for closure on similar grounds. Yet 21 cases remained unresolved and required further analysis.
Separately, testimony presented to US lawmakers in 2025 described encounters with fast-moving orb-like objects near military assets.
Video footage shown during a congressional hearing reportedly captured a US MQ-9 drone engaging one such object off the coast of Yemen in October 2024, though the outcome of that encounter has not been publicly confirmed.
A Department of Defense spokesperson has previously stated that the Pentagon 'takes all reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena seriously' and continues to investigate them through the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
Still, officials have not linked any of these incidents to extraterrestrial technology.
Between Speculation And Evidence
There is, at present, no direct proof that alien probes exist in the solar system or that technosignatures have been conclusively identified in the asteroid belt.
IBTimes UK cannot independently verify these claims, so they should be treated with caution.
Researchers emphasise that unexplained observations should not be interpreted as evidence of extraterrestrial technology without independent verification.
What once sounded like fringe speculation is now, at least in some scientific circles, a question of methodology rather than belief.
If probes were placed millions or even billions of years ago, designed to remain dormant or unobtrusive, they would not announce themselves.
And if that sounds far-fetched, it is worth remembering how little of our own solar system has been examined up close. The asteroid belt alone contains millions of objects. Most have never been visited, let alone analysed in detail.
Because only a small proportion of Solar System objects have been studied in detail, researchers continue to debate the most effective ways to search for potential technosignatures.

Wildfire forces evacuation of NASA’s Deep Space Network complex in Spain

A fast-moving wildfire, one of many raging across Spain, bore down on the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex on Friday, forcing an evacuation and temporarily suspending operations at one of NASA’s most important tracking stations.
The tracking station is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, operating in concert with similar facilities in California and Australia to provide global coverage as Earth’s rotation brings the planets, stars, and deep space probes in and out of view.
The network supports more than 40 missions from the Moon to the edge of the Solar System, including Artemis, the James Webb Space Telescope, and NASA’s twin Voyager spacecraft.
A NASA spokesperson confirmed the tracking station in Spain, located in the hills nearly 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of central Madrid, was evaluated Friday “due to ongoing wildfires in the region.
Photos and video from the area showed flames and smoke plumes rising over the ground station’s antenna array, anchored by a 230-foot-diameter (70-meter) radio dish and a collection of smaller 112-foot (34-meter) antennas.
“Any potential damage will be assessed when it is safe to do so,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The Deep Space Network is managed by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NASA officials are monitoring wildfires in the Madrid region in coordination with local authorities and the US Embassy.
“In the meantime, the agency has seamlessly transitioned support for mission operations to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, ensuring continuity of service and uninterrupted support for spacecraft communications,” the NASA spokesperson said.
High demand and short supply
NASA typically runs the Deep Space Network using a “follow the Sun” model, in which control centers at each DSN site in Australia, California, and Spain can remotely operate the entire network during local daytime hours. Antennas at each location operate around the clock.
A NASA website providing status updates on each DSN complex showed no activity at the Madrid site Friday afternoon, while antennas at the California and Australia locations were communicating with several NASA spacecraft, such as Voyager 2 and Juno, exploring interstellar space and Jupiter, respectively.
“The safety and well‑being of our personnel is our highest priority and our thoughts are with the families and neighbors who are also experiencing the impact of the wildfires in the surrounding communities,” NASA said. “We will provide updates as conditions evolve.”
A separate deep space tracking station owned and operated by the Spanish government and the European Space Agency was also evacuated due to wildfires, according to Spanish news reports.
The Cebreros tracking station, part of ESA’s Estrack network, is located a few miles away from NASA’s DSN facility.
Reuters reported Friday that Spanish authorities ordered more than 19,000 people to evacuate from towns in the mountains west of Madrid.
More than 2,000 personnel and 10 aircraft were deployed to combat the wildfires. A summer heat wave and chronic drought conditions have made conditions ripe for wildfires across Spain and France.
Without the Madrid location, the Deep Space Network is down to one operational 70-meter radio antenna in Australia. The 70-meter antenna in California has been offline since last year due to an accident that “over-rotated” the structure.
The incident damaged cables and water lines, flooding the base of the antenna with 200,000 gallons of water containing glycol, an environmental hazard.
The cleanup and repair is projected to cost between $4.1 million and $4.6 million. NASA officials are combining the repairs with already-planned upgrades. The work is expected to keep the antenna offline into 2028.
The good news for DSN is the next Artemis mission to the Moon is still at least a couple of years away. Artemis missions put high demand on DSN, with additional requirements for telemetry and imagery downlinks to support human spaceflight.
Artemis III will now fly in low-Earth orbit to test the Orion capsule with commercial Moon landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin. Artemis IV, the program’s first planned lunar landing with astronauts, is targeted for no earlier than 2028.

NASA’s ESCAPADE Snaps Family Portrait of Earth, Moon

On July 3, one of NASA’s two Mars-destined ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers) spacecraft captured photos of Earth and the Moon in visible and thermal infrared light.
At the time, the spacecraft was 363,250 miles (584,600 kilometers) from Earth and 115,600 miles (186,100 kilometers) from the Moon, making the Moon appear relatively large.
Taken with the Sun only partly illuminating Earth and the Moon, the visible light image shows the two bodies as crescents, with only around 8% of each face sunlit.
Yet in the thermal infrared image, the shadowed hemisphere of Earth is illuminated by its own heat from both the atmosphere and surface, glowing at minus 10 to minus 44 degrees Fahrenheit (250 to 280 kelvins).
Without the insulating blankets of oceans and atmospheres, the Moon’s far side remains at a much cooler minus 280 degrees Fahrenheit (100 kelvins).
The ESCAPADE mission used its Visible and Infrared Observation System cameras, provided by Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, to capture the images, which are more than just road trip photo album snaps.
"We are thrilled that ESCAPADE was able to accommodate these excellent space-qualified cameras which will search for visible Martian aurora and investigate thermal properties of the Martian surface and atmosphere,” said Rob Lillis, the mission’s principal investigator at the University of California, Berkeley.
“Since Earth and the Moon are well-known targets, imaging them provides an important calibration check for ESCAPADE’s cameras.”
The ESCAPADE spacecraft, which were built by Rocket Lab, are currently in a “loiter” orbit around Lagrange point 2, a location in space about a million miles from Earth.
In November 2026, the spacecraft will fly by Earth to use the planet’s gravity to slingshot their way to Mars. When the spacecraft arrive in September 2027, they will study how a million-mile-per-hour stream of material flowing from the Sun, known as solar wind, interacts with the Martian environment and how that drives atmospheric loss at the Red Planet.
The ESCAPADE mission is funded by NASA’s Heliophysics Division and is part of the NASA Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration program.

CMSSF visit to PACOM highlights maturation of space integration

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna completed a multi-installation tour across the U.S. Pacific Command area of responsibility, June 8-26.
The tour allowed Bentivegna to engage with Guardians, Airmen, and allied partners to assess readiness and the evolution of space integration.
Throughout the tour, which featured stops at Yokota Air Base, Misawa Air Base, Kadena Air Base, Osan Air Base, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Bentivegna observed real-world operations demonstrating how U.S. Space Forces Pacific is actively driving space integration into broader USPACOM operations.
"Our Guardians out here in the Pacific are getting after it every single day." Bentivegna said.
"Whether they’re safeguarding critical military satellite communications, mitigating interference, or monitoring theater missile warning and tracking operations, these Guardians are the driving force securing the space domain.
They're delivering the vital capabilities our Joint Force relies on to deter aggression in this theater.”
While each site visit in Japan, Korea and Hawaii emphasized a commitment to tactical excellence, much of the tour’s focus centered on the strategic maturation of Theater Space Operations Centers.
Initially fielded during exercise Keen Edge 26, the TSpOC concept is designed to provide integrated, responsive, and assured space capabilities; enable effective command and control of theater space capabilities; and enhance space domain awareness across the Pacific.
"What we saw during KEEN EDGE proved that to fight and win, we need robust, dedicated command and control for space,” said Brig. Gen. Brian Denaro, SPACEPAC commander.
“Our Guardians are taking that framework and using it right now to deliver real-world effects for the combatant commander.”
To ensure regional agility, SPACEPAC is actively coordinating with U.S. Space Forces–Korea and U.S. Space Forces–Japan to build requirements for space operations centers tailored to support their specific missions, along with scalable, mobile solutions for regional operations.
"What SPACEPAC, USSPACEFOR-KOR, and USSPACEFOR-JPN are building out here is setting the blueprint for the entire Space Force," Bentivegna emphasized.
"We are empowering our space professionals at every level to execute the mission. Tailoring these ops centers ensures our Guardians have exactly what they need to stay agile, mobile, and ready to respond across the region."

SpaceX Starlink Mission

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 24 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
A live webcast of this mission will begin about 10 minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX.
This will be the eighth flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched NROL-105 and six Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean.
There is the possibility that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what residents experience will depend on weather and other conditions.

Swiss researchers find evidence of active volcanoes on Venus

Venus is an inhospitable place where temperatures reach several hundred degrees, and there are no oceans like those on Earth.
Nevertheless, there were visible signs of tectonic activity, such as rift systems – some of them enormous – according to a press release issued on Friday by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich.
These resembled those on Earth, such as the African Rift Valley. On Venus, there are rift valleys up to 10,000 kilometres long.
It is unclear when these rifts formed. Geoscientists had assumed that they were formed over a 100 million years ago and are therefore relics of the past.
However, according to the press release, ETH Zurich researchers led by Taras Gerya, Professor of Geodynamics in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, have now used a new computer model to show that some of the rift valleys may well have formed more recently.
The study has just been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
Using a new computer model, lead author Xi Yang and his colleagues simulated the rifts in high resolution and in three dimensions for the first time.
This enabled these structures to be accurately represented in the simulations and their formation to be better explained.
Previous simulations relied on simplified assumptions regarding material properties and were often only two-dimensional.

Kiev is targeting civilian infrastructure in Russia in an attempt to provoke Moscow into responding in kind so that Ukraine can “play the victim,” knowing Western media will largely ignore attacks on Russian civilians, former Pentagon senior security policy analyst Michael Maloof has told RT.
Thursday marked the third Ukrainian strike on warehouses belonging to Russia’s largest e-commerce retailer, Wildberries in an escalation of Kiev’s campaign against Russian civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine has claimed the company supports Russian military logistics, an allegation denied by both Moscow and Wildberries itself. In a separate attack the same day, Ukrainian forces also struck storage facilities at a poultry farm near St. Petersburg.
Speaking to RT on Friday, Maloof described the attacks as a deliberate “terrorist” strategy.
“They’re doing it purposely in order to lure Russia to start hitting civilian targets… thereby knowing that the Western press will take that information and run with it,” he said.
“And that’s all that you’ll ever hear. You never hear about the attacks in Russia on civilian targets… And so I think the Ukrainians are just trying to play victim once again.”
Maloof dismissed Kiev’s assertion that Wildberries – an online marketplace comparable to Amazon – is a legitimate military target.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s absurd in the extreme.”
He argued that Ukraine expects most Western media outlets not to scrutinize its claims or “see the fraud” behind the justification for attacking the company.
According to Maloof, the broader campaign against Russian energy, food and other civilian infrastructure is aimed primarily at shaping public opinion abroad and securing continued Western financial support.
“It’s propagandistic purposes” designed to win “billions of euros” to continue the conflict, he said.
Maloof added that Ukraine’s European backers are fully aware that civilian sites are being targeted but choose to overlook it.
“They’re using Ukraine for their purposes: ultimately to attack Russia themselves,” he said. “All of this is instigated by the Europeans.”

Major Russian Black Sea Oil Terminal Halts Operations Amid Ukrainian Drone Threat

Russia's largest Black Sea oil export terminal has suspended tanker loadings following a surge in Ukrainian drone attacks, disrupting roughly one-fifth of the country's seaborne crude exports, Bloomberg reported Friday.
The Sheskharis terminal in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk has not loaded any tankers since Tuesday morning, Bloomberg reported, citing shipping data, satellite imagery and vessel-tracking services.
The suspension is unlikely to have been caused by bad weather, Bloomberg said, noting that storm warnings for the area were issued only two days after the terminal's last loading operation.
The disruption marks the latest sign that Ukraine's expanding drone campaign is increasingly affecting Russia's energy export infrastructure, following recent attacks that also interrupted operations at the nearby Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) export terminal and forced Kazakhstan to reduce oil production.
The Sheskharis terminal exported an average of about 650,000 barrels of oil per day during the first seven months of the year.
With Russia's average seaborne oil exports running at about 3.6 million barrels per day this year, the suspension has effectively halted around one-fifth of the country's oil exports.
Earlier this week, increased drone activity prevented tankers from loading crude at the nearby CPC terminal, which handles about 80% of Kazakhstan's oil exports.
The disruption forced the terminal to suspend operations, leading Kazakhstan to begin cutting oil production.
On Thursday, Russian authorities warned all vessels operating within the country's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea that the area was unsafe because of the potential threat posed by Ukrainian aerial and naval drones.
The warning also raised concerns about Russian grain exports. Novorossiysk handles roughly one-third of Russia's grain exports, making it the country's most important grain export hub.

Burlison details fight to pass UAP disclosure amendment, touts healthcare bill support

Southwest Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison said he overcame significant political and procedural obstacles to secure passage of a measure aimed at increasing government transparency surrounding unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, as part of the House version of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act.
Speaking Friday on Newstalk KZRG, the Republican said the amendment would establish a statutory framework for collecting, reviewing and publicly releasing federal records related to UAPs, commonly referred to as UFOs.
The proposal would create an independent review board appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
The board would receive UAP-related records, including videos, reports and other documents, from federal agencies and determine whether they should be released to the public.
Under the amendment, records more than 25 years old would generally be subject to automatic declassification unless the president determines their release would pose a national security risk.
"It basically sets a posture of having the declassification switch on," Burlison said. "In order for them to stop something, they have to actually take action to stop it."
Burlison said Congress would retain oversight of the review board to ensure it fulfills its responsibility to release records when appropriate.
The amendment was adopted as part of the House's defense authorization bill, which establishes policy and priorities for the military but does not itself provide funding. Appropriations legislation is required before federal money is spent.
Burlison said adding the UAP language required months of negotiations and overcoming repeated procedural objections from congressional staff and committees.
He said opponents questioned whether the House Armed Services Committee had jurisdiction over the amendment before later raising concerns involving the Judiciary Committee.
Burlison said he contacted House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, directly after learning of those objections.
According to Burlison, Jordan said he had no concerns with the proposal, and Judiciary Committee staff later informed the House Rules Committee they did not oppose the amendment.
Burlison also said he voted against a procedural rule advanced by his own party after the amendment was initially excluded from consideration, a move he described as unusual but necessary to keep the proposal alive.
"It was difficult to get that in there," Burlison said. "We had to fight staffers, really staffers, people that are unelected, who kept throwing every excuse in the book."
The congressman characterized the effort as a bipartisan transparency initiative, noting previous attempts by former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to advance similar disclosure legislation.
"I never thought in a million years I'd be agreeing with Chuck Schumer on something," Burlison said. "But when it comes to transparency and accountability for the American people, we do agree."
Burlison said the defense authorization bill also includes several conservative priorities, including language from the SAVE America Act and provisions prohibiting Pentagon funding for transgender surgeries.
During the interview, Burlison also discussed his healthcare reform proposal, which recently received endorsements from several conservative and business organizations, including the National Federation of Independent Business, Heritage Action and the America First Policy Institute.
He called the support from NFIB particularly significant because of the organization's representation of small businesses.
Burlison said the endorsements demonstrate growing momentum behind legislation designed to expand market-based healthcare reforms while preventing the adoption of a government-run, single-payer healthcare system.
"My number one policy item that we're working on is healthcare," Burlison said. "We're trying to make sure that we don't end up in a single-payer model.
We don't end up with government-run healthcare for everything, and that we return healthcare to a free market and something that people can really and actually afford."
The House-approved National Defense Authorization Act must still be reconciled with the Senate version before a final bill can be sent to the president for consideration.

In a recent SETI Live conversation, host Dr. Lauren Sgro spoke with UCLA astronomer emeritus Dr. Ben Zuckerman about his paper, Broadband Searches for Extraterrestrial Technological Intelligence: A New Strategy to Find Alien Civilizations.
Their discussion explored a different way of thinking about SETI searches, and challenged one of the assumptions that has shaped many traditional strategies.
For Dr. Zuckerman, the motivation behind the paper comes back to a fundamental question. “Are we alone in our Milky Way galaxy?” he explained. “And how best might one go about trying to answer this question?”
Rethinking the Assumptions Behind Radio SETI
Traditional radio SETI searches often focus on narrow-band signals. The reasoning is based on an idea Dr. Zuckerman calls “power starvation.”
If a civilization does not know where to send a signal, it may need to broadcast in many directions. Because the available energy is spread out, the signal arriving at Earth would be weak.
To make such a signal easier to detect, a transmitter could concentrate its energy into a very narrow range of wavelengths.
However, Dr. Zuckerman suggests that this assumption may not apply to a sufficiently advanced civilization. The key question is: what if they already know where to look?
An advanced technological society, he explained, could have built powerful space telescopes and interferometers capable of studying distant planets. Using these instruments, they could identify worlds with characteristics that suggest the presence of life.
“They will know that Earth is special,” Dr. Zuckerman said.
They may not know that humans exist, but they could recognize Earth as a planet with oceans, an atmosphere, changing seasons, and other signs that make it an interesting target.
If a civilization knows where to direct a message, then the need to conserve power changes. Instead of sending weak signals in every direction, they could send powerful signals directly toward promising worlds.

Looking for Signals We May Have Missed
One of the most interesting ideas discussed during SETI Live was that scientists on Earth may not need to build a new telescope to begin searching this way.
Dr. Zuckerman pointed to existing broadband radio surveys carried out for other astronomical purposes. These surveys were designed to study objects such as distant galaxies, but they also captured data from many nearby Sun-like stars.
Because older Sun-like stars are not expected to produce strong radio emissions, an unusual signal coming from one of these systems could stand out. Additionally, we know of no natural sources that can produce narrowband signals, and so they would be attributed to ET life.
The challenge is that researchers were not necessarily looking for these kinds of signals when the observations were collected.
“There might be something we’ve just overlooked,” Dr. Zuckerman said.
Rather than only collecting new observations, scientists could return to existing archives and examine the data with a different question in mind: could there be evidence of a technological civilization hidden among these measurements?
Modern computational tools, including artificial intelligence, could make this type of search more practical by helping researchers analyze large astronomical datasets for unusual patterns.
Why Broadband Signals Could Change the Search
A major difference between traditional narrow-band searches and the strategy discussed by Dr. Zuckerman is the amount of information that could be carried.
Narrow signals can be easier to detect when the correct frequency is known, but they carry limited information. Broadband signals, on the other hand, could allow a civilization to transmit much more complex information.
The challenge is that we do not know which wavelengths another civilization would choose.
As Dr. Zuckerman explained, extraterrestrial communication could potentially occur across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, including radio, infrared, or optical wavelengths.
That uncertainty is one reason SETI searches continue to explore many different approaches. At the SETI Institute, we use both radio signature and LASER searches.
What If We Still Find Nothing?
During the conversation, Lauren asked what a continued lack of detections could tell us.
Dr. Zuckerman emphasized that a null result would not prove we are alone in the universe. Instead, it would place limits on how many communicative technological civilizations could exist.
In his paper, he uses a search region extending about 650 light-years around the Sun as an arbitrary example. If researchers searched this volume thoroughly across relevant wavelengths and found no evidence of communication, it would suggest that the number of purposely communicative civilizations in the Milky Way is lower than some earlier estimates.
The calculation also depends on an important assumption: that our local region is representative of the galaxy.
Dr. Zuckerman noted that larger search volumes in the future could provide even stronger constraints.
What About Alien Probes?
The discussion also explored another possibility: instead of sending signals, could an advanced civilization have sent physical probes?
Dr. Zuckerman explained that if technological civilizations were common and had existed for a long time, some may have had opportunities to send probes toward nearby stars, including our own solar system.

The fact that we have not found evidence of such technology provides another way to estimate how common advanced civilizations might be.
As with radio searches, the absence of a discovery does not answer every question, but it does provide valuable information.
According to Dr. Zuckerman, the fact that we have found no evidence of past contact—whether in the form of signals, probes, or visiting spacecraft—can be used to place an upper limit on N, the number of technologically communicative civilizations in the Milky Way.
Over the past two billion years, roughly two million old, single Sun-like stars have passed within 100 light-years of Earth.
Compared to the roughly 20 billion similar stars in the Galaxy, this "null result" suggests that such civilizations must be rare, placing an upper limit of about 10,000 on N.
Searching the Galaxy While Protecting Earth
The conversation ended with a reminder that the search for life beyond Earth also changes how we think about life here.
Dr. Zuckerman emphasized that if technological civilizations are rare, then life on Earth is especially valuable.
“Life on Earth is really precious,” he said, highlighting the importance of finding ways to live sustainably and protect our planet’s biosphere.
The search for other civilizations is ultimately also a reflection on our own.
As we continue looking for signs of life elsewhere, we are reminded of the responsibility to understand and preserve the life we already know exists.

A Decade-Long Voyage Through the Milky-Way is Possible Without a Wormhole Shortcut

Unlike societal laws, it is impossible to break the laws of physics.
The distance of the Sun from the center of the Milky-Way is about 26,000 light years, implying that a spacecraft would require at least 26 millennia to cross it, given that the speed limit on the interstellar highway is the speed of light.
Since 1935, when Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen proposed here that a spacetime bridge could link two separate regions of space, it became fashionable to ask whether a spacetime wormhole of this type could be traversed by a traveler.
As of now, wormholes are not known to be traversable and remain purely hypothetical. For known materials, they pinch closed too quickly for even light to pass through.
To prevent immediate collapse, a wormhole must be stabilized by a substance with a negative mass. This negative mass exerts gravitational repulsion that acts as a scaffold.
The entry of a traveler adds a positive mass that tends to trigger a catastrophic collapse of a wormhole. Furthermore, gravitational tidal forces inside a normal wormhole would be severe enough to tear a traveler apart.
To date, no experimental evidence or astronomical observation has ever confirmed that wormholes exist in our universe, let alone that they can be used for spacetime travel.
Does this mean that Galactic trips are impossible over a human lifespan? Not at all.
Let us start from a practical consideration. In a low-gravity space environment, astronauts lose about 1–2% of their bone mineral density per month (as reported here). This implies that humans cannot survive a low-gravity trip that lasts more than a decade.
The simplest way to mitigate this health risk is by generating artificial gravity through acceleration of the spacecraft that carries the astronauts at the value equal to the Earth’s surface gravity of 1g= 9.81 meters per second squared.
A spacecraft accelerating at 1g will reach the speed of light in about a year.
If it continues to accelerate at 1g for half of the trip and then decelerates at 1g for the second half, it would reach a distance of 26,000 light years within 19.8 years (roughly two decades) in the traveler’s frame, while 26,000 years elapse in the frame of Earth.
If, however, the traveler is not interested in decelerating, the trip to the Galactic center will only take 10.6 years, roughly a decade.
Hence, a pleasant 1g trip — which would feel to a human just like staying still on the surface of Earth, can take place on a human lifespan throughout the Milky-Way galaxy.
As you might have guessed, there is a rub. Interstellar travel agencies will likely charge a huge fee for such a journey because of its energy cost.
An acceleration all the whole way to the Galactic center requires an energy that is 55,000 larger than the rest-mass equivalent of the payload.
For a human with a body mass of 150 kilogram, the required energy amounts to 3.2 gigatons of TNT, comparable to the total energy stored in the global nuclear arsenal on Earth today.
For the acceleration-deceleration trip option, the required energy is 13,450 times larger than this. On top of these numbers, one needs to account for the limited efficiency of the propulsion engine and the need to bring the fuel to the rest frame of the spacecraft.
Health insurance companies for interstellar travel will also need to worry about the fact that cold interstellar protons appear as energetic cosmic-rays in the frame of the spacecraft, triggering additional health hazards as they generate particle showers from the spacecraft walls.
However, if space engineers ever have access to a negative mass that is equal in magnitude to the payload mass, then the energy-cost of the trip can be close to zero because no energy is required to accelerate a system with a zero total mass up to the speed of light.
When evaluating the feasibility of such trips, we must adopt a sense of cosmic modesty. Elon Musk is probably not the most accomplished space entrepreneur that existed since the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago.
In our first encounter with interstellar travelers, we can ask them for path length and duration of their journey. These two numbers would immediately educate us whether they solved the engineering challenges facing a decade-long travel of a spacecraft with a positive mass through the Milky-Way. Otherwise, they might have mastered the production of a negative mass.
