Intern arrested in Belgium on suspicion of spying inside NATO military headquarters
BRUSSELS – A Canadian woman was arrested and accused of espionage while working as an intern in the operational headquarters of the NATO military alliance, Belgian authorities said Saturday.
Belgium's Federal Prosecutor's Office said it launched an espionage investigation after NATO’s security services tipped off Belgium’s military intelligence. Authorities then detained“a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin”on Friday, a day after raiding the suspect's home and workplace inside NATO's vast command center.
“She is suspected of spying on behalf of a third country and of being a member of a criminal organization,” the prosecutors said in a statement.
The strategic headquarters of the Allied Powers, known as SHAPE, is located in the southern Belgian city of Mons near the French border. Military officials at SHAPE plan and command joint strategy, tactics and operations. The alliance’s political headquarters is in Brussels, where ambassadors from member nations meet to discuss defense spending, drone incursions and cyber threats. NATO's Cyber Security Centre is based at SHAPE.

15 arrested in Shelby County human trafficking operation
Fifteen people were arrested during a human trafficking operation in north Shelby County, according to the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Investigators conducted the operation Thursday, July 23. All 15 suspects were charged with prostitution: commercialized sex and booked into the Shelby County Jail.
Those arrested were:
Carlos Barba-Sanchez, George Brand, Steven Crews, Rodrick Hicks, Jacob Hollingsworth, Quinton Lee, Wayne Leslie, Carter Lundstrom, Arthur McClendon, Efrem Miller, Prudhvi Paladugu, Tremele Perry, Bruno Reyes, Robert Suttles and Naushad Sundrani.

Most Wanted COVID-19 Fraud Fugitive Returned from Jamaica to Face Charges in $32 Million Scheme
MIAMI – A fugitive on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters List has been returned to the Southern District of Florida to face federal charges for her alleged role in a scheme that fraudulently obtained more than $32 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.
Elaine Escoe, 41, was charged by indictment in 2025 with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and multiple substantive counts of wire fraud and money laundering. After a federal arrest warrant was issued in May 2025, Escoe failed to appear for her court appearance and fled to Jamaica. Acting on information developed by the FBI, Jamaican authorities captured Escoe after receiving a tip. She was returned to South Florida today through the coordinated efforts of the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF), and the JCF Jamaica Fugitive Apprehension Team.
“This Most Wanted Fraudster allegedly obtained tens of millions in COVID-19 relief, stealing critical resources from legitimate businesses during a national crisis,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “She fled the country believing she could escape justice but ultimately could not. Those who exploit taxpayer-funded programs will be held accountable by this Department of Justice, no matter how long it takes or where they attempt to hide.”
“Elaine Angene Escoe’s arrest and return to the United States demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of American justice,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. “This Most Wanted Fraudster faces charges stemming from a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud taxpayer-funded COVID-19 relief programs. The Fraud Division will continue to vigorously prosecute those who steal from the American people.”

Honduras ex-President Hernandez to return home after Trump pardon
TEGUCIGALPA, July 26 (Reuters) - Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez is set to return to Honduras on Sunday, eight months after U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned him while he was serving a 45-year U.S. prison sentence for drug and arms trafficking.
Hernandez, who served two consecutive terms as president from 2014 to 2022, is set to land at Palmerola International Airport, about 60 km (37 miles) northwest of the capital, Tegucigalpa, on a private flight.
He is expected to appear before a court on August 3 to face charges of fraud and money laundering. An arrest warrant issued against him was suspended in June, meaning he will not be detained upon arrival.
In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Hernandez, 57, said he would request the charges be dismissed.

Brazil officials say visa requests denied to Trump officials ahead of election
Brazil denied the request for visas on Friday to the U.S. delegation, which would have included Assistant Secretary Riley M. Barnes from the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, and also Samuel Samson, a deputy assistant secretary, the Brazilian officials said.
The rejection was based on "evidence pointing to a renewed attempt to politically exploit the situation and undermine the electoral system", one of the officials said.

U.S. appeals court rules Trump cannot implement mail-in voting order
A federal appeals court on Saturday declined to allow U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to implement in 23 states his executive order that aims to tighten rules for mail-in voting ahead of November elections that will decide control of Congress.
The Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the administration’s request to lift an injunction several Democratic-led states secured on June 25 from a lower-court judge who concluded that key parts of the Republican president’s order were unconstitutional.
In asking the court to pause U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani’s ruling while it pursues an appeal, the U.S. Department of Justice had argued that because government agencies had yet to finalize actions and policies to implement Trump’s directive, any lawsuit challenging his order was premature.
The appeals court, in a 2-1 ruling, rejected that argument.
