NASA Astronaut Chris Williams, Crewmates Return from Space Station

Concluding an eight-month science mission aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Chris Williams returned to Earth on Sunday alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev.
The crew made its safe, parachute-assisted landing at 5:27 a.m. CDT (3:27 p.m., Kazakhstan time), southeast of Dzhezkazgan, after departing the space station at 2:03 a.m., aboard the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.
The crew was in space for 241 days, orbiting the Earth 3,856 times and traveling more than 102 million miles. They launched to the International Space Station on Nov. 27, 2025.
The mission was the first for Williams and Mikaev and the second for Kud-Sverchkov.
While aboard the orbiting laboratory, Williams supported a wide range of scientific investigations and technology demonstrations.
He helped advance research for new cancer treatments and improved in-space manufacturing of materials used in high-performance computers and electronics.
Williams also completed two spacewalks to prep for space station power system upgrades and to replace a faulty joint on the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
The crew’s work aboard the space station helps improve life on Earth and prepare for future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
Following post-landing medical checks, the crew members will fly by helicopter to Karaganda, Kazakhstan, where recovery teams are based. Williams then will board a NASA aircraft bound for the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
For more than 25 years, people have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth.
The space station helps NASA understand and overcome the challenges of human spaceflight, expand commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit, and build on the foundation for long-duration missions to the Moon, as part of the Artemis program, and to Mars.

Study shows neutrino flavor changes in neutron star mergers may reshape heavy element formation and detectable cosmic signals.
A new study by researchers from Penn State and the University of Tennessee Knoxville suggests that changes in neutrinos during neutron star mergers could play an important role in how these powerful cosmic events unfold, the signals they produce and the formation of heavy elements in the universe.
The findings, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, describe the first computer simulations to include changes in neutrino "flavors" during the merger of two neutron stars.
The researchers said the results could improve understanding of how heavy metals and rare earth elements are formed, provide new insights into matter under extreme conditions and help scientists interpret future observations of these events.
Neutron stars are the extremely dense cores left behind after massive stars explode as supernovae. Although they are only about the size of a city, they can contain more mass than the Sun.
When two neutron stars collide, they create some of the most energetic events in the universe. These collisions produce gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time, and electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays that can be detected from Earth.
Scientists also believe these mergers are one of the universe's main sources of heavy elements such as gold and platinum.
One of the key particles involved in these events is the neutrino, an electrically neutral particle that interacts only weakly with matter.
Because neutrinos rarely interact with their surroundings, they can travel vast distances while carrying information about the environments where they were produced. Neutrinos exist in three forms, or "flavors", called electron, muon and tau.
Under certain conditions, they can change from one flavor to another. Since each flavor interacts differently with matter, these transformations can change the balance between neutrons and protons during a neutron star merger, which in turn affects how new elements are formed.
Previous simulations of neutron star mergers did not include this process.
"Previous simulations of binary neutron star mergers have not included the transformation of neutrino flavor," said Yi Qiu, graduate student in physics at the Penn State Eberly College of Science and the study's first author.
"This is partly because this process happens on a nanosecond timescale and is very difficult to capture and partly because, until recently, we didn't know enough about the theoretical physics underlying these transformations, which falls outside of the standard model of physics.
In our new simulations, we found that the extent and location of neutrinos mixing and transforming impacts the matter that is ejected from the merger, the structure and composition of what remains after the merger — the remnant — as well as the material around it."
To study these effects, the researchers built the first numerical relativity simulation to include neutrino flavor transformations during neutron star mergers.
Numerical relativity uses computer models based on Einstein's theory of gravity to simulate events involving extremely strong gravitational fields.

The simulation combined gravity, general relativity, hydrodynamics, which describes how dense stellar matter moves, and neutrino mixing.
The researchers focused on the conversion of electron neutrinos into muon neutrinos, which they identified as the most relevant transformation in these environments.
They also tested different scenarios by changing when and where neutrino mixing occurred, as well as the density of the surrounding matter.
The simulations showed that neutrino flavor transformations changed the composition and structure of the merger remnant, the object left behind after the collision.
According to the researchers, these changes could also leave a detectable signature in the gravitational waves produced after the merger, helping scientists better understand these events through future observations.
The study also found that neutrino transformations significantly affected nucleosynthesis, the process through which new atomic elements are formed, and the composition of the matter ejected during the merger.
As neutron-rich material is thrown into space, atoms rapidly capture neutrons and eventually form heavier elements, including gold, platinum and rare earth elements used in products such as smartphones, electric vehicle batteries and other electronic devices.
"A neutrino's flavor changes how it interacts with other matter," said David Radice, Knerr Early Career Professor of Physics and associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the Penn State Eberly College of Science.
"Electron type neutrinos can take a neutron, one of the three basic parts of an atom, and transform it into the other two, a proton and electron. But muon type neutrinos cannot do this.
So, the conversion of neutrino flavors can alter how many neutrons are available in the system, which directly impacts the creation of heavy metals and rare earth elements.
There are still many lingering questions about the cosmic origin of these important elements, and we found that accounting for neutrino mixing could increase element production by as much as a factor of 10."
The researchers also found that neutrino mixing influenced the amount and composition of material ejected during the merger.
This could affect the electromagnetic signals, including X-rays and gamma rays, and possibly the gravitational waves produced by these events.
"In our simulations, neutrino mixing impacted the electromagnetic emissions from neutron star mergers and possibly the gravitational waves as well," Radice said.
"With cutting-edge detectors like LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA and their next generation counterparts, such as the proposed Cosmic Explorer observatory that could start operations in the 2030s, astronomers are poised to detect gravitational waves more often than we have before.
Better understanding how these emissions are created from neutron star mergers will help us interpret future observations."
The LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) mission is a global network of gravitational-wave observatories that detect ripples in space-time caused by events such as merging black holes and neutron stars.
Through NASA's General Coordinates Network (GCN), LVK quickly shares alerts and sky maps with astronomers worldwide, enabling rapid follow-up observations and advancing the study of the dynamic universe.
Despite the findings, the researchers said many aspects of neutrino transformations are still not fully understood. "There's still a lot we don't know about the theoretical physics of these neutrino transformations," Qiu said.
"As theoretical particle physics continues to advance, we can greatly improve our simulations. What remains uncertain is where and how these transformations occur in neutron star mergers.
Our current understanding suggests they are very likely, and our simulations show that, if they take place, they can have major effects, making it important to include them in future models and analyses."
The team said the simulation framework developed for the study can now be used by other researchers to further investigate neutrino flavor transformations and their role in neutron star mergers.
"Neutron star mergers function like cosmic laboratories, providing important insights into extreme physics that we can't replicate safely on Earth," Radice said.

SpaceX eyes tower catch for next Starship after auspicious end to 13th flight

SpaceX will likely attempt to catch Starship back at the launch pad on its next flight.
SpaceX was more than lucky Friday, sending its 13th full-scale Starship test flight halfway around the world from South Texas to an on-target, intact splashdown in a remote section of the Indian Ocean.
Starship has made precise splashdowns before. This time, however, the ship gently tipped over and came to rest floating in a remote stretch of ocean west of Australia.
Previous splashdowns ended with conflagrations, an outcome SpaceX officials have come to expect with each water landing of Starship.
The buoyant Starship looked to be in fine shape after reaching the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX engineers flew drones over the vehicle to inspect its heat shield, getting their best look yet at how more than 18,000 ceramic tiles insulating the ship’s stainless steel airframe weathered the trip to space and back.
The tiles withstood temperatures up to 2,600° Fahrenheit (1,430° Celsius) as Starship streaked back into the atmosphere at the end of its hour-long flight from Starbase, Texas.
Encouraged by the picture-perfect end to Friday’s flight, SpaceX is likely to take the next leap with Starship on the next launch, according to the company’s founder and CEO, Elon Musk.
That would entail hurling Starship on a longer-range trajectory, perhaps into low-Earth orbit, to bring the vehicle back to the launch site. Mechanical arms on the launch tower will attempt to capture the ship as it slows to a hover.
SpaceX has already done this with the rocket’s massive Super Heavy booster, which is larger and heavier than Starship itself, but comes back at a fraction of the speed.
“Unless we discover problems after mission data review, SpaceX will attempt to catch the ship with the tower on next flight,” Musk wrote on X Friday evening.
Hungry for data
Engineers have long identified the performance and durability of the heat shield as one of the toughest challenges for the Starship program. SpaceX’s ambition for Starship includes rapid turnarounds, and eventually multiple flights per day.
If this is to be achievable, the heat shield has to be robust against the vibrations and extreme temperatures it sees during launch and reentry. It can’t be refurbished or replaced after every flight.
“This is the first time we’ve put an intact Starship in the water,” said Dan Huot, a SpaceX communications manager providing commentary on the company’s live webcast. “This is a dream scenario for the team that’s trying to get this heat shield data.”
The intact splashdown Friday also opens up the possibility for SpaceX to tow the rocket back to shore, probably somewhere in Australia, for more detailed inspections. Starship is designed for reuse, but not after exposure to salt water.
“This is so critical for refining the heat shield and everything else. The really good news is … you’re looking at a pretty intact-looking heat shield,” Huot said.
“We were flying at a significantly higher dynamic pressure, so putting way more stress on this vehicle on the way uphill, and it’s sitting there in the water.”
SpaceX continued receiving signals from Starship after splashdown through the company’s Starlink satellite broadband network. A camera onboard Starship showed no signs of external damage to the vehicle’s six Raptor engines as water lapped against the lens.
Friday’s test flight was the 13th launch of SpaceX’s Starship on top of its massive Super Heavy booster, and the second flight of the latest iteration of the world’s most powerful rocket—Starship Version 3.
The 408-foot-tall (124-meter) rocket lifted off from Starbase, Texas, a few miles north of the US-Mexico border, at 5:51 pm CDT (6:51 pm EDT; 22:51 UTC).
Thirty-three methane-fueled Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster steered the rocket east over the Gulf of Mexico and into the upper atmosphere, where the booster separated from Starship’s upper stage after burning most of its cryogenic propellant.
The only thing left incomplete on SpaceX’s checklist for Flight 13 was the controlled splashdown of the Super Heavy booster. It was supposed to relight its engines for a landing burn off the coast of Texas, simulating maneuvers required to return the booster back to the launch pad for recovery and reuse.

But some of the Raptor engines failed to restart for the landing burn, and the booster fell into the ocean at high speed. SpaceX also had trouble with the booster splashdown on the last flight in May.
Friday’s flight showed some progress, but engineers have more work to do on recovering this version the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX previously recovered and re-flew Super Heavy boosters two times with the Starship Version 2 design, but not with Version 3.
“The booster successfully completed the high thrust portion of the boostback burn with all 33 engines, the first time with a Super Heavy V3, before ending the burn early,” SpaceX officials wrote in an update on the company’s website.
“It attempted to relight its engines for the landing burn, with a subset successfully igniting before experiencing a hard splashdown in the Gulf.”
Success in space
Starship continued accelerating into space as the Super Heavy booster descended toward the Gulf, firing its six engines more than five minutes before beginning a half-hour coast over the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and South Africa.
A few minutes after engine shutdown, Starship opened its payload bay door and started deploying a stack of 20 Starlink satellites. The satellites are the first of SpaceX’s upgraded Starlink V3 model, with significant improvements in throughput and power.
They are also larger and heavier than Starlink V2s, meaning they will not fit on SpaceX’s smaller, workhorse Falcon 9 rocket.
Starship released the Starlink V3s using its Pez-like deployer, tossing them overboard through a slit-like opening on the side of the spacecraft. The flat-panel satellites did not stay in space for long.
They flew on the same arcing suborbital trajectory as Starship, and were designed to burn up as they fell back into the atmosphere less than an hour after launch.
In little time, SpaceX ground teams established contact with each of the satellites through radio and laser communication links, and “downloaded key telemetry” before their fiery demise.
This provided engineers with their first look at the performance of Starlink V3s in space.
With the satellite deployments complete, attention turned to a brief restart of one of the ship’s Raptor engines, something engineers forewent on the last flight.
The burn lasted approximately 14 seconds, and was visible to observers in South Africa. SpaceX hailed the demonstration as “core capability for future orbital missions.” Gravity then pulled Starship back to Earth.
The next steps for Starship are getting to orbit and returning the ship to the launch site.
Those achievements will give SpaceX the capability to begin launching operational Starlink V3 satellites, unlocking higher-speed direct-to-device connectivity for consumers and the US military, and the revenue to go along with it.
For NASA, an orbital flight puts SpaceX on a path toward orbital refueling. This demonstration is vital for any Starship flight beyond low-Earth orbit, including missions to the Moon in support of NASA’s Artemis program.
NASA is working with SpaceX and Blue Origin to develop human-rated versions of Starship and the Blue Moon lander to ferry astronauts to and from the lunar surface.
“Excited for what will be learned from this mission,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman wrote on X after the launch of Flight 13. “When Starship comes online, its capabilities will be game-changing, not least of which will be ensuring we never give up the Moon again!”
SpaceX has one active launch pad in Texas, and a second Starship pad undergoing renovations there. Two Starship launch sites are under construction at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The orbital refueling demonstration will include two Starship launches, allowing the vehicles to rendezvous and dock with one another in orbit. One ship will then transfer methane and liquid oxygen propellants to the other through automated couplers.

The strikes targeted a site where employees of a US-Ukrainian enterprise helped assemble up to 1,000 UAVs monthly, officials say
Russian forces have struck military-industrial enterprises in Kiev that produce hundreds of drones per month, and fuel dumps in Odessa Region used by the Ukrainian army, the Defense Ministry says.
Among the targets in Kiev was an industrial enterprise the ministry identified as Smart Intelligent Systems, manufacturing drones of various types, along with their components, including fuselages, electronic parts, navigation equipment, optics, and batteries.
The strikes also hit a separate assembly and storage site in southwestern Kiev where specialists from a US-Ukrainian company were involved in monthly production of up to 1,000 drones of various types, including the AQ-400 Scythe and AQ-100 Bayonet attack drones, as well as the RQ-100 Scout reconnaissance drone.
The AQ-400 is a kamikaze drone with a plywood fuselage, with a declared range of up to 750 km and a warhead of around 40 kg.
It is designed and built by the Ukrainian company Terminal Autonomy, which was founded in mid-2022 by veterans of the British and Australian militaries and a Ukrainian engineer.
In Odessa Region, the strikes destroyed fuel and lubricant storage tanks at the port of Chernomorsk that the ministry said were used to supply the Ukrainian army.
Fires broke out in three districts in Kiev, according to the local authorities.
A warehouse, ten cars, and a truck burned in a parking area in Desnyansky District, while a fire and structural damage were reported at a non-residential building in Solomensky District, officials said.
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky claimed Russia launched a total of eight missiles and 136 drones of various types, adding that the strikes were also aimed at targets in Russia’s Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Donetsk regions, as well as Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Sumy, Nikolayev, and Chernigov regions.
He said many targets were intercepted but not all, and that a ballistic missile strike on the capital injured three people.
The Ukrainian Air Force said the overnight attack involved one Kh-59/69 air-launched cruise missile, seven Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and more than 100 drones.
It claimed that it neutralized one cruise missile, five ballistic missiles, and 104 drones, while two ballistic missiles and 27 drones hit 18 locations, with debris from intercepted targets falling on seven more.
Russia has been striking defense-linked facilities in retaliation for Ukrainian long-range attacks on Russian civilian and critical infrastructure targets. Moscow maintains it does not target civilians.

Ukraine Knocks Out Russian Drone Control Relay and Energy Site in Occupied Crimea

Ukraine’s Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes against Russian military and military-economic targets overnight on July 26, hitting a Chornomornaftogaz facility and a ground relay station used to control attack drones in temporarily occupied Crimea, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on July 26.
The General Staff also confirmed the results of a previous long-range strike on Russia’s Tyumen oil refinery, describing the facility as a key fuel supplier supporting Russia’s military-industrial sector.
According to the General Staff, Ukrainian forces struck a Chornomornaftogaz site near the village of Vnukove in temporarily occupied Crimea. The military reported that the target was successfully hit.
The General Staff said that since Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, the seized Chornomornaftogaz infrastructure has been used not only for the extraction, storage, and transportation of natural gas and petroleum products but also to support the energy needs of Russian forces stationed on the peninsula.
Ukraine also targeted a ground-based relay station used to control Geran and Gerbera attack drones near Chornomorske in temporarily occupied Crimea.
According to the General Staff, such relay stations extend the operational range of Russian drones while improving the stability and reliability of command links during attacks on Ukraine.
In addition to the strikes in Crimea, Ukrainian forces hit a road bridge near Vyselky in the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region that, according to the military, is used by Russian forces for logistics.
The General Staff also reported strikes on a Russian drone storage site near Chervonopopivka and on an area where Russian personnel were concentrated near Purdivka in occupied Luhansk region.
The military simultaneously released updated assessments of previous long-range strikes conducted on July 25, confirming that Ukraine had successfully hit the Tyumen Oil Refinery in western Siberia.
According to the General Staff, the refinery has an annual processing capacity of approximately seven million metric tons of crude oil. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, and other petroleum products used, among other purposes, to supply Russia’s military-industrial complex and armed forces.
Earlier, Ukrainian long-range drones reached Russia’s Yekaterinburg, approximately 1,750 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, where a fire broke out near a Wildberries logistics hub.
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces commander, Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, later said Ukrainian drones had struck six Wildberries logistics facilities across Russia and temporarily occupied Crimea.

The strike killed Colonel Wael El-Ledawi, head of the service in central Gaza, and Major Ramez Abu Zraiq, medics and the Hamas-run interior ministry said.
The Israeli military said it had carried out a strike against a Hamas militant, without further details.

A brief flash of white over Hawaii has reopened an old question: when the paperwork says nothing happened, how much weight do we give to the people who swear they saw it?
A passenger on a small commuter flight in Hawaii says her plane was forced to swerve mid-air to avoid a UFO on 9 July, in an incident so abrupt it 'scared the hell' out of her and, she claims, visibly alarmed both pilots. T
he alleged near-miss happened as the Mokulele Airlines service from Molokai to Maui emerged from cloud, when a 'white something' suddenly appeared in front of the aircraft.
The reported encounter came just one day before the Pentagon released its latest batch of declassified UFO files, including footage of another fast-moving white object passing close to a US military aircraft.
The Hawaii sighting sits in that awkward gap between official denial and eyewitness certainty, a space that has been steadily filling with newly public documents and years of quietly filed reports.
The passenger, Molokai resident Tami Dixon, told local media she was travelling to Maui for eye surgery when the object appeared without warning as the plane left a thick cloud bank that had reduced visibility to zero.
'Literally scared the hell out of me. Both pilots looked at each other and veered to the right,' she recalled.
Dixon said the object did not resemble a bird and looked too small to be another aircraft in Mokulele's normal flight path.
She initially suspected a drone, but even that explanation has run into doubts from people who work with the technology every day.
UFO Sighting Over Hawaii Raises Safety Questions
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board both said they could not confirm that any other aircraft or registered craft were in the area at the time.
A spokesperson for Mokulele Airlines, meanwhile, the company has no record of a near-miss involving one of its planes that day.
So, on paper, there is nothing there. No second aircraft, no logged airprox incident, no radar-confirmed drone.
Yet Dixon insists that something white and solid enough to prompt a sudden evasive manoeuvre was directly in front of the cockpit windows as the aircraft cleared the clouds.
According to her account, the pilots' reaction was instant: a sharp veer to the right to get out of its way.
If the UFO was a drone, it would have been operating in extremely sensitive airspace. Timo Sullivan of Aloha Aina Drones, speaking to Hawaii News Now, said legal drone operations should never bring a device that close to a passenger plane.
'The FAA establishes very clear guidelines of where aircraft can fly. Kind of like on a highway, you have your own driving lane,' he said. 'They should never actually interact or you should never have one car or aircraft entering another car's lane.'

That analogy only underlines the troubling part. If everyone was following the rules, Sullivan argued, the Mokulele flight and any drone should have been in completely different 'lanes' above Hawaii.
Nothing in the available reporting indicates that the object was tracked, recovered or identified after the incident. With no corroborating radar data made public and no photographic evidence from inside the cabin, the sighting remains, in the strictest sense, an unconfirmed account.
As with many UFO stories, what we have is a collision between aviation bureaucracy and human memory, and no third element to settle the dispute.
UFO Files and a Long History of Hawaii Sightings
The day after the incident, on 10 July, the Pentagon released the fourth tranche of declassified UFO material, including video from the eastern United States in 2015.
That footage shows a small white object racing past a military aircraft at a speed that analysts have variously compared to a missile, a jet, or something faster than any acknowledged human technology.
In fairness, the skies over Hawaii are not regarded as the world's busiest UFO corridor. Yet the state is hardly a blank spot.
The independent National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), which collates civilian sightings worldwide, lists more than 700 incidents in Hawaii since 1960. So far this year alone, nine separate UFO reports have been submitted from the state.
Those accounts range from 'strange lights in the sky' to geometric shapes described as orbs, triangles, diamonds and rectangles, hovering or moving over the islands. They are raw, uneven and often impossible to verify, but they form a long-running backdrop to any new story like Dixon's.
Popular culture has layered its own mythology on top. The son of country music legend Willie Nelson, singer-songwriter Lukas Nelson, described multiple UFO encounters in Hawaii during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in July 2025, according to the report.
He said that in 2006 he and several others watched orange, orb-like objects streak over Maui, with one floating less than 200 yards above them as if observing the group.
'Then I swear it seemed like as soon as enough people saw it, it went whoosh,' he recounted. The object, he said, shot out of sight and appeared to leave the atmosphere 'faster than any drone.'
The official US government position has long been that there is no physical proof of UFOs or alien life. Even the new wave of declassified material is couched in cautious language about 'unidentified anomalous phenomena,' not visitors from elsewhere.
Yet the growing stack of cockpit videos, radar blips and shaken passenger stories, from Maui to the eastern seaboard, keeps nudging that line.
In the case of the Mokulele flight, nothing is confirmed yet, so everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
What remains is a commuter plane over Hawaii, a cloud bank, a sudden flash of white and two pilots, according to one passenger, forced to pick a new lane in the sky.

But does this presidential announcement actually change anything for whistleblowers?
Critics say the order changes almost nothing
Trump’s NDA waiver raised an eyebrow with one figure in particular.
Experienced researcher Melinda Leslie dismissed the move as "performative kabuki theater," arguing the announcement has been widely misunderstood.
In Lesley’s opinion, nondisclosure agreements are not the issue. Under contract law, ex-workers of the government are prohibited from revealing classified information publicly, therefore, Trump's assurances might not guarantee impunity.
She argues witnesses have always been able to provide classified information through authorized government channels, meaning the directive changes little in practice.
As ever, the Reddit r/UFO group discussed the issue at heart, with one commenter dubbing Leslie’s comments as “emotional,” before someone called out the “misogynistic take,” adding that “would-be whistleblowers who might be fooled into getting themselves convicted.”
Another Redditor spoke of the gamble of officially coming forward as a witness, describing the president's unpredictable nature. However, one replier disagreed, describing how the president's role allows him to give pardons.
But maybe we’ve been searching for aliens all wrong
As everything seems to be about UFO disclosure left, right, and center, astronomers proposed an alternative way of searching for extraterrestrial life.
Researchers presenting new work at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting in the UK argue SETI has spent decades concentrating on the famous "water hole" frequencies between 1.42 and 1.66 GHz.
Instead, the team suggests searching the largely unexplored millimeter and submillimeter radio spectrum using ALMA, one of the world's most powerful radio telescope arrays.
The first survey found no technosignatures, but researchers say the project demonstrates an entirely new region of the radio spectrum is now open for SETI investigations.
The study also revealed previous SETI searches may have covered far more stars than originally estimated.
By replacing Gaia catalogues with the Besançon Galactic Model, researchers increased the estimated number of stars surveyed from roughly 288,000 to more than 6.1 million.
It seems that the absence of a signal doesn’t mean there’s nothing out there.

A mysterious object photographed over Soweto had South Africans stopping in their tracks on 25 July 2026. Known philanthropist and content creator BI Phakathi shared the video on Facebook with a simple caption: "UFO spotted in Soweto."
The video exploded online almost immediately. South Africans flooded the comments to offer their theories on what exactly was hovering in the night sky above one of the country's most iconic townships.
What flew over Soweto? The post by BI Phakathi shows a night sky with a bright, crescent-shaped object that some viewers found difficult to explain.
While sceptics pointed out that the object could have a perfectly ordinary explanation, others were convinced something unusual was going on above Soweto's rooftops.
The debate quickly split into several camps: those convinced it was extraterrestrial, those linking it to a commercial space programme, and those poking fun at the whole thing entirely. Watch the clip that has South Africa talking below:

Collection is outgrowing space as officials look at ways to make it a true tourist attraction
RIO RANCHO — “If you build it, they will come.”
The famous line adapted from “The Field of Dreams” could describe a conversation on the future of the National UFO Historical Records Center in Rio Rancho at RioTECH last week.
The meeting, attended by those from the center, representatives from Rio Rancho Public Schools, current and former elected officials and other interested community members, focused on how to turn the records center, currently in two portables at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, into a true museum that could be a tourist draw for Rio Rancho.
Background on the center
The files at the National UFO Historical Records Center are extensive and varied in type.
“It’s the largest gathering of UFO materials ever assembled in the history of the United States,” said David Marler, the center’s executive director, with materials predating the Roswell incident in 1947.
“Our mission is to collect, preserve and provide historical UFO material to the general public and interested parties” to assist in serious UFO research, aid in chronicling UFO history for present and future generations regardless of belief or non belief in the subject manager, according to the mission statement.
Marler said the collection includes front pages of newspapers, original photographs, artifacts from the Project Blue Book investigation, police reports, pilot reports, original military documents, audio recordings, and cassette reel-to-reels going back to the 1950s.
“We have the largest collection of historical UFO case files ever assembled in the history of North America,” he said.
Barry Roth, the center’s chief historian and archivist, placed the number of files at 175,000.
He said what was particularly relevant to him when he joined with Marler was that Marler had files from what he called the “big three” in UFO research:
The Center for UFO Studies, National Investigative Committee on Aerial Phenomena and the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization as well as subsets from those organizations.
Then, he said, files began to come in from international organizations, including Britain and Australia.
Michael Baker, chief operations officer for Rio Rancho Public Schools, also gave some background on how the district got involved.
In 2024, as part of a partnership between the district and the center, 2,600 of square feet was made available at MLK Jr. Elementary for the center in exchange for lectures for students with a focus on critical thinking.
“Our purpose is not to prove or disprove extraterrestrial life. … Our purpose instead is to give our students some skills and some tools in order to engage in some critical thinking,” he said, stressing that UFO does not necessarily mean extraterrestrial.
“David, Barry and the others have assembled probably the world’s largest collection of files that focus on UFO science,” he added, saying it’s 1,000 times more than what Roswell has at its center.
“It’s not right that this collection be locked up. Instead, it would be right for us to share the material in the center with the community and potentially the world.
“Now I see an even greater opportunity: expanding the center to not only be a storage unit, but a place where people could come together and learn about the subject, research the case files, be entertained and much, much more.”
Government interest
Many of the speakers at the meeting feel the time is ripe for further expansion of the center, saying interest in the subject is at an all-time high, including from the federal government.
“This is also a period in time where it’s the largest public interest in the UFO subject. I’ve been in this field for 36 years. Never has the interest been so strong,” Marler said.
State Sen. Jay Block concurred.
“At this time in our country’s history, you’re seeing the secretary of war release massive amounts of files and videos, and when you go over and see the archive, the records here in Rio Rancho, they are from all 50 states, and they are from around the world.
No other collection has that,” he said. “The Department of War is very, very interested in what we have in Rio Rancho and what David has put together.”
Marler spoke about some of the interaction he’s had with government agencies in recent months, saying they’ve had a visit from Dr. Jon Kosloski, director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO, a year and a half ago.
Kosloski, he said, is a 25-year veteran of the National Security Administration and is currently heading up the Pentagon UFO — or UAP (unidentified anomalous phenomena) — program.

“We have been working collaboratively for the last year and half behind the scenes, providing guidance on where to identify historic documents that have been released in recent months and weeks,” Marler said.
“We have the current government program that is interested in what we’re doing. We’ve actually had two on-site visits,” he added. “I was invited to D.C. in August of last year for a workshop, invitation only.
We’re having biweekly meetings with these individuals and trying to help steer them toward government documents that are in their own archives.
“The DOJ has reached out to us, and we’ve been in dialog since last May with that agency, and I was recently invited to give a United States government interagency briefing on the UFO-UAV subject on June 5, and there was Air Force, FAA, FBI, a number of different agencies represented.
The point is, they’re interested, and they’re looking at it through the lens of national security, much like the Air Force did for 22 years,” Marler said.
Looking to the future
The National UFO Historical Records Center, in its current form, however, is once again running out of space.
That has prompted the center, district, elected officials and others to join forces with McClain + You Architecture and Design to conceptualize a true museum and visitor space for the center.
Marler said they currently have 50 totes of material ready to come in from the Center for UFO Studies but don’t have the space.
Once shelving from Sandoval County — including discretionary funds from Commissioner Mike Meek — comes in, they will be able to move forward with having those shipped.
“Our vision at a very basic level is to expand this,” said Patrick Martinez, RRPS executive director of facilities.
“There’s a lot of opportunities there, and really the goal of this vision is to extend beyond K-12. It’s really to start incorporating adult education, lifelong learners, community engagement and … tourism.”
“Rio Rancho could become a destination where people from the fare reaches of the world would come, would learn, explore, and it would also help the tourism industry of the state and our community,” Baker said.
Roth spoke to what the space would need to move forward in meeting the center’s vision.
“Our goal Is to digitize everything,” he said. “You need to repair some of (the files), and then put them through a scanner, and then go ahead and digitize your audio and your video, and you’re putting in chronological order 10,000 newspaper clippings and then digitize them, and then digitize the photos and the slides.

“If we had a proper space, we’d have a dissemination area for collections. We’d have a research area. We’d have a lecture hall for proper presentations.
We’d have a museum where people, where the case files could speak to them. In essence from a global standpoint, people from all over the world would want to come,” he added, saying they would need about 8,000-10,000 square feet.
As the group rotated into smaller groups to conceptualize various parts of the center, including a planetarium proposed by Martinez, Raimund McClain from McClain + You asked participants to think about who might be supporters and partners, how it could be leveraged for education, where initial financial backing might come from, how it might become a tourist destination and potential synergies with Roswell.
A sampling of the ideas brought forth from the session included incorporating a community space for meetings and events, an escape room, a lecture hall, a selfie station for social media, night at the museum events, a cafe, classes for all levels of learning, interactive displays, unique ways to incorporate the audio files, interactive activities such as build your own UFO, outdoor spaces, a telescope area, interactive maps, kiosks to play material, membership cards, immersive experiences via the planetarium, integration with the pueblos and more.
“I’m really excited about where the future will take us,” Roth said.
“I would like everybody to get on board and join the county as we move forward and try to get them what they need to make this the number-one attraction in our city,” Meek said.
“I’m going to get more for this group before I leave, and we’re going to try to get the county to actually do a resolution to recognize that this is such an important thing that the county has to get involved and be a bigger player in this development.”
“It is critical that we develop partners if we’re going to make this a reality. We cannot do this alone. The school system cannot do this alone,” Baker said.
“Who is on board to help us create something incredibly unique, educational, entertainment-driven and bring tourism to Rio Rancho? We want to make Rio Rancho a destination.”
Block, who secured discretionary funds for display board from Corrales-based Ideum, also looked forward to the future of the center.
“This is going to be a national place to come and do research for years because of David and his team.”

Corbell: "Zero came from my end. Zero. Those are government-filmed UAP. They were provoked to release them by a variety of ways. @g_knapp and I gave a multitude of lists of UAP filmed by our military, to Congress.
They validated, they vetted, they found out where they were. We told them where they are, we had eyes on them, making sure they're not going to be deleted.
"This is something we've acquired over decades, George and myself. You know, the newer ones are kind of the the best, I would say. You know, better hardware than, let's say, 15 years ago. But…so none of them came from us. That…it is government-filmed footage.
"We identified the file names and file structures and location of holdings, gave that to Congress, and it's not just the 46. It actually surprised me when @RepLuna put out, and it was a gangster move. Rep. Luna put out a public letter to Pete Hegseth saying, 'Here are 46 files that we want.'
"They didn't mention…it's actually 14 Air Force files that we've identified - even to the Department of Justice - that there's a bottleneck in UAP reporting within our own government. Remember 'Immaculate Constellation,' the idea of like, siphoning off the best footage.
Well, George and I were able to identify that in Central Command, that there was a nexus point where there was a bottleneck, and the best UAP footage and evidence was being siphoned off even before it got to AARO.

"Even our, you know, who were kind of enemies at a time, we informed AARO that there's this bottleneck, and if you want to find out where the good sh*t's going, we told them where.
So, when you say 46 videos, 52 videos. Bro, there are probably hundreds of thousands. Very little ever get to reporters like George and myself, and it takes years for us to vet and verify.
"And then, you know, anybody that leaks videos to journalists - if you consider them sources- they're at risk, you know, when journalists publish them. So, I have always been fighting.
And then people yell at me, and they're like, 'It's not good enough, and the frame rates aren't right.' And all this weird sh*t. They're just baiting to try to like, dig in and try to investigate sources. It's all a charade. Everything with that online is a charade. They're just trying to entrap people.
"So what we do, is we take the heat and we just keep doing the reporting.
We gave Congress way more than 46 file structures, file names with locations, with evidence they exist. But we don't possess anything. We can't, legally. We can obtain and release. I'm familiar with, have access from time-to-time, too.
"You know, you have to be really smart as a journalist on what your rights are. That's why I have a federal lawyer, which you learned in the movie is Chuck McCullough. Kind of one of the best federal lawyers you could have, now that I've admitted it, right?"
(McCullough was the first Intelligence Community Inspector General, represented David Grusch, and is HIGHLY respected. The fact that he's representing Corbell is something that's lost on the Corbell haters.)
Corbell: "So, basically, those are the protocols. Our government has hundreds of thousands, in full-motion video, which is like a layered, sensor system from satellite platforms, as an example, which you've never seen, no one's ever seen.
With incredible fidelity, showing all-domain UAP coming from space-to-air-to-sea and back out, from sea-to-air-to space. That's fact. I know that for a fact. I have been witness to a lot of that information.
"But I did not give anything to Congress except file names, and they verified, vetted, and put out a public letter for 46. They kept the other ones private, which I think was smart.
Because sometimes even just the the file names themselves, you know, could be an issue for 100 reasons. Does that clarify what you're asking?"
Andy: "100% And even in the Discord, when that drop happened, everyone's Discords and stuff were going crazy. People were asking, 'Are these the videos that Corbell and Knapp have provided?'
So there has been this idea, from some, that you guys gave them the videos. But what you've given was the locations, how to get them, where they were."
Corbell: "The exact file names and locations, with verifiable proof that they do exist, that they did exist upon delivery, of those titles. You know.
I'm not gonna just… You know, and also, what we get, when they ask for them, from Pete Hegseth and Department of War, is when they do release them, which they were provoked to do. That's the thing.
"And they're not all out. The 46, just read the file names that were in that list, and then look at what was released. They are not all out. So think about that.
They give you the underhanded pitch, the bottom of the barrel. And George Knapp and I, as I have said, we're gonna continue our reporting.
"But it's kind of like a warning shot. You're like, here's what is in the hands of over 100 journalists, including podcasters now. Meaning they they can get access if they need.
That's a whole process. But, essentially, we're telling them what journalists have. So what you can do is get in front of it and release the full, original files. And then nobody argues about frame rates, nobody goes after sources.

"That's the way it should work because the onus is on the United States government because they themselves have said that we are going to be transparent about this, we're gonna be putting out all this information. Good, good.
"So you've started, and it was total happenstance that the first release was on the premiere of 'Sleeping Dog' date, In in the sense that, I had no idea they were going to do that.
It's kind of hilarious. But, you know, we did inform them before about the movie and that we're gonna, you know, do our journalism. So, you do the math."
Andy: "Yeah, no, that's useful. And can we just confirm, I am not one of the podcasters who has those files before I am raided, or the CIA get in touch."
Corbell: "Nobody has the files. You know, George and I have been sure to back up our work and provide an ability, if anything goes sideways, that, you know, the American public gets what they need. You know, it's very simple, dude. It's not like cloak and dagger.
"You have to make sure that when you're reporting on things of national-security concern, that you don't damage national security, A number one.
I'm an American, I live here, I love my country. Like, straight up. But also, you put things in place so that you're not the only one who's been able to see or have access, at time. And that's what we did.
"We did that to protect sources, whistleblowers, and the information itself getting out to people. I don't possess anything, Andy. Of course, you don't. You're a foreign journalist to me.
I'm sorry, but that that's another aspect to it. Is that, even though we have Five-Eyes Alliance, we've never hung out and had a beer, dude."
Andy: "Not yet."
Corbell: "[Laughs] I hope to."
Andy: "Next year's Contact [in the Desert], maybe. So those 100 journalists… Because so many folks got in touch with me to ask…"
Corbell: "100-plus."
Andy: "100-plus, journalists and podcasters. It's not like you've sent out a special-edition pen drive and went, 'Here's all the files, if something happens.'
But there are ways and means that if something did happen to yourself and/or George (Corbell: "Oh yeah"), these folks can access this material?"
Corbell: "Yeah. I said it in Episode 60 of Weaponized, right? So we have, as journalists, we have covered and made sure the American public will never be, you know, the American public will never stay in the dark about what we've reported on or what we have to report on.
But, you know, we have to go slow, we have to vet everything. It's just an insurance thing that that people would have instantaneous access.
"I don't want that, either. Like, I don't want…you can't tell your friends, somebody, without telling your enemies.
You know, and I don't…I would rather that we just continue doing our journalism under First Amendment, in America, without any interruption, in any way, that is illegal. And that's what's been happening. You know, the influence campaigns and the threats and that kind of thing.
"So, yeah, man, I don't know how far we wanna go into that, but just base-level, we have made sure to protect the information that George Knapp and I have obtained over the decades.
We don't hold in possession of anything, but at the same time, we've democratized the way that information will get out if we're stopped in any way, and that's just how it is."
Andy: "And you guys are in full control of that, that no one can go rogue that has the information, or, you know, 'Ah, f**k Jeremy and George. I can access this. I'm gonna go off and find.' No, you guys are in complete control of that?"
Corbell: "No, because that's a national-security issue because the nature of any information that comes to us in this realm. But additionally, that's not the right way to go about…
I don't wanna go too deep into this, but that's not the right way that journalists operate, right? Is, you don't just haphazardly… So, no. Is that okay? Just end with no?"
Andy: "You can end with 'no' on that one. It might come back round in one of these other answers to a different question."

The video also addresses IMMACULATE CONSTELLATION, KONA BLUE, black budgets, the role of private defense contractors, and the problem of transparency in the most compartmentalized government programs.
Mauro Biglino places these documents in parallel with some little-known episodes in the biblical texts: the flying scroll and the container transported between earth and sky described by Zechariah, the sound of a march over the treetops, the roar of chariots and horses putting an army to flight, the mal'akh suspended above Jerusalem, the stars battling from the sky, and Yahweh riding a swift cloud.
