It categorized red wines from the Médoc into five tiers (Crus Classés) and sweet white wines from Sauternes and Barsac into three tiers. The official list, which remains largely unchanged, is divided into the following categories:

First Growths (Premiers Crus):

Château Lafite-Rothschild

Château Latour

Château Margaux

Château Haut-Brion (the only wine from Graves)

Château Mouton-Rothschild (elevated to First Growth in 1973).
