Iran has accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which it says resulted in an explosion that killed on sailor and injured another.

As we previously reported of the Saturday maritime incident, Ukraine seems to be openly boasting of this escalation. President Zelensky himself announced soon after on X, "We also have very good results from long-range strikes in the waters of the Caspian Sea. In particular, these are vessels that were involved in transporting military cargo from Iran, and a warship."

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to severely protest the "hostile and criminal" attack on Saturday, IRNA reported. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has further warned that the "blatant UN Charter violation" which was "done at Israel's behest" could serve to "drag Europe into its war". Araghchi also denounced and attacked Zelensky personally, calling him the "freeloader in Kyiv"…

With the war against Iran now effectively on hold, partly amid Pentagon warnings over dwindling interceptor stocks, the West is being forced to confront a problem it largely ignored for decades.

Israel could also be affected, despite its substantial domestic production capacity.

The central concern involves expensive Patriot and THAAD interceptors, which have been used extensively against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones that often cost only a fraction of the weapons fired to destroy them.

After nearly two weeks of nightly exchanges between Iran and the United States, an uneasy calm has settled over the region.

The New York Times reported overnight that one reason U.S. President Donald Trump set aside plans for a dramatic escalation, at least temporarily, was concern that a powerful Iranian response could significantly deplete the Patriot missiles and other interceptors available to U.S. forces in the Middle East.

At the heart of closed-door discussions in Washington was the Pentagon’s shrinking interceptor stockpile.

In recent weeks, U.S. systems have faced heavy barrages of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones targeting bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

The cost of a failure in those defenses became clear last weekend, when U.S. troops were killed in Jordan after a ballistic missile penetrated air defenses during a combined Iranian barrage of missiles and drones, according to a senior U.S. official.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine warned in private discussions that the military could resume large-scale fighting against Iran, but that doing so risked dangerously reducing the number of interceptors available to U.S. Central Command.

After 13 consecutive nights of fire, the United States and Iran have stopped attacking each other over the past two days, and relatively conciliatory messages have been heard from both sides. But on Sunday evening, U.S. President Donald Trump posted two belligerent AI-generated images on his social media platform — making clear, at the very least, and in his own way, that the military option remains on the table.

In the first image, under the headline “Attack on Kharg,” aircraft and vessels can be seen bombing the Iranian oil island. In the second, Trump himself is seen standing with a U.S. flag on an oil tanker flying the Iranian flag, under the headline: “It's our oil tanker now!” He later posted another version of the image, in which U.S. Marines, a warship and people dressed as Houthis jumping off the Iranian vessel can be seen behind him. In another image, Trump called himself “cosmic commander.”

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Sunday evening that “the United States and Iran are exchanging messages” as part of the negotiations between them.
