Wildfires in France are now directly threatening the Rothschilds' legendary wine estates in the historic city of Bordeaux.

 

The biggest threat isn't the flames. It's the smoke.

 

Grapes can absorb smoke compounds before they're harvested, causing irreversible smoke taint that can permanently alter the taste and aroma of the wine.

 

If the smoke exposure becomes severe enough, the entire 2026 vintage could be be ruined, putting a significant share of Bordeaux's elite wine production in jeopardy.

#OTD in 1959, Lt. Col. William Rankin ejected from his F-8 Crusader at 47,000 ft and fell through a cumulonimbus thunderstorm cloud. He was in a freefall for 5 minutes until his parachute opened at 10,000 ft. He then spent 35 minutes being whipped around in the storm as lightning bolts shot by him. He had to hold his breathe to avoid being drowned by the heavy rain. Suffering frostbite and severe decompression, he eventually landed in a forest. He wrote a book about his experience titled THE MAN WHO RODE THE THUNDER.
