July full moon to coincide with peak meteor activity this week: Here's everything to know

July 27, 2026

Skywatchers across the Northern Hemisphere are in for a celestial treat this week as July’s full “Buck Moon” rises alongside peak activity from multiple meteor showers.

The Buck Moon, which gets its name because this is the month when male deer start to grow new horns, will be at its fullest state at 10:37 a.m. EDT on July 29, Wednesday.

Although the actual moment of fullness takes place during the day, the moon will still be seen as fully round during moonrise just after dusk.

Adding to the excitement, the astronomers reveal that the Delta Aquariid (meteor shower observed manually from mid-July to mid-August) and Alpha Capricornid (meteor shower takes place as early as 7 July and continues until around 15 August) will peak overnight from July 31 to August 1.

Together, there will be up to 30 meteors per hour, with Alpha Capricornids known for producing bright fireballs despite their lower hourly rate.

Unfortunately, the strong moonlight produced by the full Buck Moon might drown out less obvious meteors. According to experts, it is better to turn away from the moon and hide behind some objects like trees or buildings.

The Delta Aquariids, which take place between July 12 and August 23, are created because of the passage of Earth's orbit through the comet 96P/Machholz dust trail.

Moving forward, the most popular meteor shower of the year – the Perseid meteor shower – will reach its peak on August 12-13 and coincide with a total solar eclipse visible from eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Additionally, the UK and parts of North America will see a partial eclipse, with up to 90% of the sun covered.

To observe celestial activity, astronomers urge sky lovers to find dark skies away from city lights. No special equipment is needed to spot meteors, though eclipse glasses will be essential for the August 12 solar event.

Lunar South Pole not a good landing spot for Artemis IV, says Artemis II pilot Victor Glover

July 27, 2026

The experienced NASA astronaut hoped for a more gradual approach to the lunar South Pole.

The pilot of the Artemis II mission, Victor Glover, has expressed his reservations about NASA picking the lunar South Pole as the landing spot for Artemis IV—its first crewed mission back to the Moon after 55 years.

Speaking at the NASA Exploration Science Forum at Ames Research Center in California on July 21, 2026, Glover said he preferred the equator, especially with the US embroiled in a race with China to get to the Moon first.

"If you want to go fast, go familiar. We want to get to the surface," stated Glover. "If we want to land soon, familiar, daylight, equator," Glover was quoted as saying in Space News.

Glover pointed to the lack of provisions to save an astronaut in an emergency situation during an Artemis mission to the South Pole of the Moon. NASA was initially planning to use a near-rectilinear halo orbit for its landing missions.

This highly elliptical orbit, which would have been used by the Gateway lunar station, would have required astronauts to spend up to a week on the Moon before the Orion spacecraft or Gateway was in a position to allow them to depart.

Glover used the example of an astronaut suffering a burst appendix, stating, "If it ruptures on landing day, you’re stuck for a week. That’s a big deal to me, and I don’t like that plan,” Glover said. “The equator gives me opportunity to save that person."

The Artemis II crew member was not dismissive of the idea of NASA aiming to reach the polar region on the Moon for future missions. "I think we need to be realistic and work our way to the South Pole and maybe not try to go there first."

NASA chose the lunar South Pole as the destination of lunar missions due to the opportunities it presents in terms of scientific discovery and potential to mine resources for sustaining human presence there.

As mentioned before, also locked in a race with the agency is the China National Space Administration (CNSA), which is also targeting the same region for its own lunar ambitions.

However, this region is unlike equatorial lunar regions, as it is dominated by deep craters and steep slopes of up to 20 degrees.

The apprehension about aiming straight for the lunar South Pole is not exclusive to Glover, with the NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) having published a report in March 2026 that also shared similar concerns.

While Glover highlighted the challenges associated with driving rovers towards the direction of the Sun, which hangs low on the lunar horizon, while wearing a suit, the OIG report alluded to the uneven terrain that could jeopardize any landing attempts, given the sheer size of the Starship (171 feet) and Blue Moon (53 feet) Human Landing Systems (HLS).

These concerns about HLS tipping over were also highlighted by the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel in its annual report published in February 2026, calling the decision to go ahead with the existing plans for a maiden Artemis lunar landing mission "questionable at best."

For now, the plans for where exactly to land on the Moon during the Artemis IV mission are not set in stone, though. According to Space News, Chief Exploration Scientist at NASA’s Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate Jacob Bleacher was also present at the event to address these questions.

“We don’t know exactly what the lander capabilities will be as they’re developing, so we’re keeping that trade space open until we have that information in hand and can really narrow down exactly where we’re going," said Bleacher.

Turning intelligence into advantage: US, Coalition Forces convene for SpaceTAT '26

July 27, 2026

Securing the critical space-based capabilities the Joint Force relies on daily requires constant vigilance and tactical evolution.

The Space Tactics Analysis Team Working Group 2026 (SpaceTAT '26), hosted by the U.S. Space Force’s Tactics and Adversary Studies Element, convened here at U.S. Space Forces - Space (S4S) headquarters June 24 to July 1 to focus on ensuring potential adversaries fail to exploit vulnerabilities in the domain.

The extensive planning and coordination required to execute the event was spearheaded by the U.S. Space Force’s Combat Forces Command, the field command responsible for training and generating combat-ready forces, alongside staff from S4S, the service component field command to U.S. Space Command that employs those forces in day-to-day global mission execution.

The working group brought together U.S. and Five Eyes coalition space operators, system experts and intelligence professionals to turn raw threat intelligence into an operational advantage.

“Space superiority begins with understanding the threat,” said U.S. Space Force Capt. Nathaniel Hlavin, Mission Delta 9 orbital warfare weapons officer.

“SpaceTAT transforms intelligence into warfighting tactics that give Guardians and our allies the operational advantage they need to deter aggression and, if necessary, fight and win.”

Building that operational advantage requires breaking down traditional silos and fusing the expertise of different space disciplines.

“Whether addressing orbital warfare or satellite communications, we are bringing operators and analysts together to solve the challenges that require our deepest focus and investment,” said U.S. Space Force Master Sgt. Jesse Silveira, Combat Forces Command lead intelligence coordinator for the event. “SpaceTAT executes a clear vision to deliver actionable solutions directly to the formation.”

To deliver those solutions, participants studied historical intelligence during the event to map adversary tactics, techniques and procedures.

Operators then translated those findings into practical defensive options, outlining the precise satellite maneuvers and system adjustments needed to counter specific orbital threats.

The team then identified non-materiel and materiel solutions, ranging from updated training guidelines to immediate software modifications, providing "fight tonight" solutions while also informing future force design.

This work directly shapes the future of Space Force training and tactics. Moving forward, teams will share these critical findings with units across the enterprise, ensuring Guardians are prepared to effectively counter evolving adversary capabilities.

Since space is a contested global domain, defending it requires close coordination with international allies. Working alongside the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, participants built a shared playbook to ensure coalition forces can respond to threats seamlessly as an integrated global defense.

SpaceTAT '26 also sets the stage for the annual Weapons and Tactics Conference (WEPTAC) held each August. While WEPTAC helps senior leaders shape future capabilities, SpaceTAT provides the immediate tactical foundation, equipping today’s Guardians to counter today’s threats.

Following the week of analysis, teams presented their findings to senior leaders, including U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Gregory J. Gagnon, Combat Forces Command commander, and Royal Canadian Air Force Maj. Gen. Kyle C. Paul, U.S. Space Command’s deputy Combined Joint Force Space Component commander.

Zelensky attacked Caspian Sea cargo ship at Israel’s behest – Iran

27 Jul, 2026 00:07 | Updated 27 Jul, 2026 05:22

Tehran accused the Ukrainian leader of seeking to drag Europe into a war with Russia

Iran has claimed that Ukraine attacked one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea at Israel’s behest over the weekend.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated earlier that the vessel struck on Saturday was transporting military cargo. Iran, which has denied involvement in the fighting between Russia and Ukraine, said the attack killed one sailor.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated his country’s position during separate calls with the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“Zelensky has attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor. A blatant UN Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war,” Araghchi wrote on X on Sunday.

“In calls with EU High Rep Kallas and FM Lavrov, [I] made clear that what the freeloader in Kiev did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED,” he added.

During his conversation with Lavrov, Araghchi said Iran “will resolutely defend its security and national interests,” according to Press TV. Lavrov expressed condolences over the sailor’s death and identified the struck vessel as the cargo ship Ana.

Speaking to Israel’s N12 television channel, Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgeny Korniychuk claimed that the Iranian ship was carrying components for drones and missiles. Tehran, however, insisted that the cargo was entirely civilian.

Iran confirmed in 2022 that it had delivered a “small number” of Shahed-136 kamikaze drones to Russia months before the Ukraine conflict began in February of that year.

Moscow has maintained that all Geran-2 drones, believed to be based on the Shahed-136 design, are produced domestically.

In recent statements and interviews with the American press, Zelensky said he was “100 percent sure” that Russia had helped Iran during its conflict with the US and Israel.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that Moscow supplied Tehran with weapons. US President Donald Trump also said recently that he did not believe either Russia or China had provided Iran with military assistance.

Romania Expels Russian Diplomat After Repeated Drone Incursions

July 27, 2026, 7:55 pm

In brief: Romania ordered a Russian embassy employee to leave the country within five days after NATO fighter jets shot down three stray drones over the weekend. One of the downed drones was confirmed to be a Russian-made

Romania ordered a Russian embassy employee to be expelled in what its foreign ministry called a “firm response” to drones repeatedly breaching the NATO member’s airspace along the Ukrainian border.

According to Romania’s foreign ministry, authorities summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev on Monday, July 27, to notify him of the decision.

AFP reported that, during the meeting, Lipayev was also shown fragments of the first drone shot down on Friday, July 24, confirming it was indeed a Russian drone.

Lipayev was informed that the foreign ministry had decided to “declare a member of the Russian Federation’s mission in Bucharest undesirable,” requiring him to “leave Romanian territory within five days.”

The move came after Romanian forces shot down three drones over the weekend, the last of which was intercepted by a Romanian F-16 fighter jet over the country’s territorial waters near the Sulina-Chilia area on Sunday morning, July 26.

The interception marked the third such incident over the course of three consecutive days.

Drone identified as Russian Shahed model

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed on July 26 that an investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office identified the first drone, downed on July 24, as a Russian Shahed-type drone – the same munition that Moscow has used extensively throughout its war against Ukraine.

“It is unacceptable that the Russian Federation continues to violate Romania’s airspace, which is simultaneously NATO and European Union airspace. Such actions are unacceptable, and we, together with our allies, treat them with the utmost seriousness,” he said.

Investigations into the two additional drones shot down on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26 remain ongoing, though a senior NATO military spokesperson said on Sunday that one of them also appeared to be of Russian origin.

Previous incidents caused injuries

Radar systems detected an aerial target roughly 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) east of Sulina on the Black Sea coast on Friday, July 24. The drone entered Romanian airspace and traveled over Sulina, Brăila, and Fetești.

Two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons deployed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base were scrambled to intercept the target, engaging the drone but failing to destroy it.

A Romanian F-16 from the 86th Air Base then fired an air-to-air missile, destroying the target over a wheat field near Padina in Buzău County.

It was the country’s first such shootdown since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. NATO praised the joint Romanian-Italian response as evidence of the alliance’s “24/7” readiness.

On Saturday morning, July 25, Romanian forces intercepted another drone approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of the city of Sfântu Gheorghe, downing it in an unpopulated area using standard neutralization procedures.

While the latest incidents passed without casualties, a Russian drone that crashed onto the roof of an apartment building in Galați in May injured two people and prompted the evacuation of at least 70.

The drone incursions came as NATO members increasingly condemned Russia’s escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, with alliance authorities warning that Moscow’s aggression could extend well beyond Ukraine’s borders.

European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned Russia’s most recent attack on Sloviansk on Friday, July 24, in which Russia deliberately struck Latvia’s Honorary Consulate.

In response, she said, the EU is expected to summon Russia’s envoy, while she intends to propose additional sanctions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex.

The Pentagon designated four soldiers killed in Jordan and Iraq in July as "Overseas Operations Casualties" on Sunday, separate from the other 14 casualties of Operation Epic Fury listed on its website.

Last week, The New York Times had reported that the number of soldiers the Pentagon had confirmed were killed during the war had been reduced, with the four soldiers having been removed from the website.

The Jerusalem Post confirmed at the time that the numbers online did not mention the four servicemembers killed - including Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, and Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, who were killed during an Iranian strike in Jordan - or those who had been wounded since July 1, despite the site having been updated on July 20.

'Far more than anyone': Trump denies munitions shortage as reason for halting Iran strikes - report

“We have far more munitions than anyone in the world, and far more than we need,” he asserted.

US President Donald Trump halted strikes against Iran as the question of the US’s declining munitions stock and its impact on the war has become widely debated, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday night, citing US officials familiar with the matter.

Trump over the weekend decided not to renew its strikes, despite military plans to launch a large-scale offensive that could have lasted up to two weeks, according to the officials.

The officials added that Trump could still order an attack on Iran, noting that “the situation remains fluid.”

Developing drone technology for future warfare

27 July 2026

Dstl worked with the Army, industry and allies to test drone technology and develop AI capabilities for future battlefield operations.

Modern battlefields are evolving rapidly, with a key challenge being uncrewed aerial systems (drones) that can disrupt operations or threaten forces, as seen in Ukraine.

Scientists at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) are working with the British Army, industry partners and international allies to test new drone technologies and develop AI-enabled capabilities for the battlefield.

Through Project VANAHEIM and the ANVIL computer vision system, Dstl is helping the Army evaluate equipment, improve operational effectiveness and accelerate the adoption of new technologies

Project VANAHEIM: testing counter-drone technology

Project VANAHEIM is a UK–US initiative aimed at countering drone threats and protecting troops.

Led by the Army’s RAPSTONE initiative, VANAHEIM uses a series of experiments that place counter-drone technology with light infantry units to assess performance in realistic conditions.

The project identifies what works, what doesn’t, and how adoption can be accelerated across the British Army to inform tactics, training, and equipment decisions.

Dstl worked with 13 industry suppliers, the Army Trials Unit, the Joint Effects Trials and Development Group, Soldierworks, and US partners.

Systems were tested in Germany and Poland during summer 2025, producing valuable operational evidence.

Further testing of the system will take place in Lithuania in summer 2026 under the US Project FLYTRAP.

Project ANVIL: computer vision for target identification

Separately, and in partnership with the British Army, Dstl has delivered the first soldier-led development of Computer Vision Models to help drones find and identify targets, combining flexibility with rapid and accurate target identification.

Computer vision allows machines to interpret images and video using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

ANVIL operates alongside the FALLING INSTRUMENTS Ground Control Station (FIGS) as part of an Initial Experimentation Systems (IES) which can be used to identify new targets and adapt to changing conditions in search and reconnaissance missions within 24 hours.

This accelerates model retraining and deployment, reducing mental effort and saving time for operators.

Building on technology from AUKUS Resilient Autonomy and AI Technologies (RAAIT), ANVIL was developed by Dstl, evolving from concept into a rugged, deployable system.

IES is now being deployed with 3 Army units to build familiarity with computer vision on the battlefield and is a critical building block of UK’s effort to develop swarming UAS capability.

Paul Andrews, Founder of the Woodstock of U.F.O.s, Dies at 77

07/26/2026

Paul Andrews, the visionary behind the annual “Woodstock of U.F.O.s” convention, passed away this week at the age of 77.

For decades, Andrews hosted this unique gathering in the California desert, creating a sanctuary for individuals to openly share their experiences and theories surrounding extraterrestrial encounters, crop circles, and a wide array of other paranormal phenomena.

This event became a significant touchstone for the U.F.O. community, fostering discussion and a sense of shared understanding among believers from diverse backgrounds.

A Hub for U.F.O. Enthusiasts

The convention, often described as the “Woodstock of U.F.O.s,” provided a safe and welcoming environment where attendees could explore complex topics without fear of judgment.

It was a place where eyewitness accounts of unexplained aerial phenomena were exchanged, intricate crop circle patterns were analyzed, and the latest theories about alien visitation were debated.

While the convention was held on the West Coast, its influence and the conversations it sparked resonated with U.F.O. enthusiasts across the nation, including those in our own South Jersey communities.

For many in Cumberland, Atlantic, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Burlington, and Cape May counties who hold an interest in these subjects, Andrews’ passing marks the end of an era for a space dedicated to their passions.

Andrews’ dedication to fostering this community leaves a lasting legacy.

The “Woodstock of U.F.O.s” served not just as a convention, but as a vital meeting point for a subculture, allowing for the free flow of ideas and personal narratives.

His passing raises questions about the future of such gatherings and the continued support for communities dedicated to exploring the unexplained.

“It’s a fistfight:” Tim Burchett says deep state is blocking Trump’s UFO disclosure push

July 27, 2026

“As crooked as a dog’s leg.”

Key takeaways:

Burchett claims a "deep state" is preventing both Congress and President Trump from accessing alleged classified UFO files.

He argues the fight over UFO disclosure has been ongoing since 1947, the year closely associated with the Roswell incident.

His comments reinforce the idea among disclosure advocates that unelected officials, not elected leaders, control access to UAP information.

Reddit users were split, with some demanding evidence and others agreeing the issue goes beyond partisan politics.

Rep. Tim Burchett has reignited the UFO disclosure debate by claiming the fight over secret UAP programs has become a "fistfight" that has been raging since 1947.

As journalist Matt Laslo approached Burchett as he was getting into a car, they had a brief interchange in which Burchett mentioned “the deep state” was blocking the White House from getting their hands on UFO-related files.

And when it came to the man at the top, President Donald Trump, Burchett said, "He's in it, but he's the one that's being denied," implying that the president may well be able to endorse releases of UFO evidence, but his access to archival information remains limited.

The Tennessee Republican argued that hidden bureaucratic resistance extends across political parties, describing the system as "crooked as a dog's leg."

And by referencing 1947, which many see as the start of “UFO lore,” especially due to the Roswell incident in which the US army allegedly recovered a flying disc, before retracting their statement, and amending it to being because of a weather balloon.

The debate regarding gatekeepers' classified information isn’t new in the UFO question, with space experts at NASA weighing in on rumors of a bigger disclosure, or even a slow-burn notion of piece-by–piece bits of evidence, like a puzzle, as described by Steven Greer.

As co-chair of the Congressional UAP Caucus, Burchett has become one of Capitol Hill's most vocal advocates for greater government transparency on unidentified anomalous phenomena.

His latest remarks add to a growing narrative among disclosure supporters that elected officials may not have complete oversight of alleged UAP programs.

A fistful of comments

Despite the fact that Burchett was in transit when approached, his brevity on the matter irked one Redditor.

"I don’t like his use of 'deep state'… He should be more specific and call out who exactly is blocking things… names, defense contractors, etc."

In support of President Trump, the same user said, “I fully believe [the president] isn’t fully read in and that it’s being controlled by a more deeply embedded group of non-elected military/intelligence people."

The Reddit r/UFO forum is a passionate place for UFO enthusiasts to sound off their opinions.

These comments can veer from the outright skeptical: "He’s playing his supporters for fools. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. Do your job, Tim!"

To the supportive: “Democrats and Republicans are united on the issue. It's not a party issue, it's like he said, deeper.”

Whatever the “deep state” may be, Burchett’s brief moment might just have cast the right amount of phosphorescence over a dubious department.

Problem Solvers: Cattle Mutilations in Central and Eastern Oregon Remain a Mystery for Ranchers

July 2, 2026 8:08 pm

HARNEY COUNTY, Ore. (KTVZ) — For generations, stories of cattle mutilations have circulated across the American West.

They've been featured on shows and documentaries like Unsolved Mysteries and Ancient Aliens, fueling decades of speculation ranging from cults, conspiracies, and the paranormal.

But for one Eastern Oregon rancher, there's nothing mysterious about the loss.

What happened on a remote stretch of rangeland outside Burns in the summer of 2019 wasn't entertainment.

It was five valuable breeding bulls, killed and surgically mutilated in less than 24 hours, a case that remains unsolved nearly seven years later.

A discovery that still doesn't make sense

Colby Marshall's family has ranched in Eastern Oregon for five generations.

He's spent much of his life working some of the state's most remote country, but nothing prepared him for the phone call he received in late August 2019 while managing operations at Silvies Valley Ranch.

"Got another dead bull up here," the cowboy told him. "They're missing their reproductive organs. It's like somebody cut them off."

Marshall remembers his disbelief, "I said, 'Are you kidding me?' That just didn't make any sense."

Seven years later, he says the memory still gives him chills. "It gives you goosebumps because nothing about it makes any sense."

Marshall led KTVZ to the isolated site, more than an hour's drive from Burns, followed by a hike across rugged terrain. Even after all these years, the bull's bones remain scattered across the landscape.

Photographs taken months after the animal died show it already deep into decomposition. But the evidence that stands out isn't the decay. It's the precision.

Marshall points to what he describes as carefully made incisions running along the animal's body. Its internal organs, reproductive organs and blood were gone. Another clean cut removed the lips, while the tongue had also been taken.

What disturbed him most, however, was what wasn't there. "There was no blood of any kind at the scene," Marshall said. "No drips of blood. No pooling. No nothing."

Five bulls in one day

The first discovery wasn't the last.

Over the next 24 hours, Marshall found four more dead bulls, each lying only a few hundred yards apart across the sprawling ranch.

Standing beside another skeleton that still marks one of the crime scenes, Marshall says little has changed except the passage of time. "It is literally like this critter had just walked out across the ground and just fell over."

Unlike the first animal, this bull had been cut from its throat to its reproductive organs. Marshall says the cuts appeared deliberate and precise, allowing whoever was responsible to remove the organs and reproductive organs.

Again, he says, there was no visible blood at the scene.

With an estimated 200 pounds of organs, tissue and blood removed from each animal, Marshall believes whoever carried out the killings didn't act alone.

"I've actually made the statement that I feel like they're operating out of Central Oregon," he said. "That's probably not going to win me any fans in Central Oregon."

Marshall believes the organs may have been taken for cult rituals or sold on the black market, though he acknowledges he has no proof of either theory. What he does reject are the explanations that have helped make cattle mutilation cases famous.

Despite decades of speculation and television documentaries about extraterrestrials, Marshall says he does not believe aliens were responsible.

Instead, he worries those theories distract from what he sees as a very real crime committed by human beings. "It was so sad," he said. "It may have just pissed you off. All of these bulls were in the prime of their life."

A mystery spanning decades

Marshall's case is far from unique.

For decades, ranchers and researchers have documented more than 10,000 reports of livestock mutilations across North America, including numerous cases in Central and Eastern Oregon.

Despite investigations by local, state and federal agencies over the years, very few have ever been solved.

"The FBI has studied it. There's been congressional hearings about it," Marshall said.

"And not one arrest?" KTVZ asked.

"That's exactly right."

Harney County Sheriff Dan Jenkins has participated in interviews for television programs and a forthcoming documentary about the case, but did not respond to KTVZ's requests for comment by phone or email.

Based on Jenkins' previous public interviews, there do not appear to be any new leads, identified suspects or significant developments in the investigation.

Hoping someone finally comes forward

Marshall says he agreed to revisit the crime scenes because he believes someone knows what happened. Only a handful of people have ever accompanied him to the isolated locations where the bulls were found.

After years without answers, he hopes renewed attention could encourage someone with information to finally come forward.

For Marshall, the mystery isn't about conspiracy theories or television shows. It's about five animals, a devastating loss, and a case that has remained unanswered for nearly seven years.

Declassified Project Moondust Files Spark Claims US Secretly Recovered UFO Debris During Cold War

27 July 2026, 9:56 AM BST

Project Moondust and Operation Bluefly unveils US government's secret UFO retrieval programmes

Long buried Cold War documents are once again fuelling one of the biggest mysteries in modern history after researchers claimed newly examined declassified files reveal a coordinated US government effort to recover unidentified flying object debris.

The records centre on Project Moondust and its partner programme, Operation Bluefly, both genuine Air Force initiatives that handled the recovery of fallen foreign objects during the Cold War.

While the documents have reignited speculation about a secret UFO retrieval programme, they stop short of proving the recovered material originated from extraterrestrial craft, leaving the debate firmly alive.

Newly Released Files Associate Project Moondust With UFO Investigations

The latest claims emerged after a researcher examined hundreds of declassified government records relating to Project Moondust and Operation Bluefly.

According to the presentation, one 1961 Air Force document places Project Moondust, Operation Bluefly and a programme identified simply as 'UFO' under the same organisational structure directed by Air Force intelligence.

The document describes the UFO programme as investigating reliable reports of unidentified flying objects within the United States.

Meanwhile, Operation Bluefly is described as facilitating the rapid delivery of items recovered through Project Moondust or other materials considered to have significant technological intelligence value.

Project Moondust itself is identified as a programme tasked with locating, recovering and transporting descended foreign space vehicles.

The presenter argued that these descriptions suggest the three programmes operated together rather than independently.

'Project Moondust, together with its operational partner Operation Bluefly, stands as the single most heavily documented, most explicitly UFO referencing, and most institutionally durable American government programme,' the presenter said.

However, historians have long noted that Moondust's publicly documented role primarily involved recovering Soviet satellites, missile components and other foreign aerospace technology that landed around the world during the Cold War.

Congo Document Draws Fresh Attention

One of the strongest arguments highlighted in the presentation involves a heavily faded 1965 government report concerning metallic fragments recovered in the Republic of the Congo.

According to the researcher, the document carries a heading stating that the material's origin was 'believed to be an unidentified flying object'.

The presenter argued this wording is significant because it appears within an internal government record rather than in material intended for public release.

The report also claims the recovered fragments were processed through the same intelligence system responsible for recovering foreign technological materials.

Additional examples discussed include debris recovered in Nepal, where American officials reportedly coordinated with local authorities and foreign governments to examine unusual fragments before determining their origin.

Operation Bluefly Became the Recovery Network

The presentation also focused heavily on Operation Bluefly, describing it as the rapid response arm responsible for quietly transporting recovered materials to military laboratories.

According to declassified records, recovered items were delivered to the Foreign Technology Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, a location that has featured prominently in UFO speculation for decades.

The researcher argued that the organisational history strengthens the case for a long running retrieval programme.

He noted that the unit eventually operating Moondust and Bluefly evolved from an Air Force intelligence squadron whose original 1953 charter explicitly listed UFO investigations among its responsibilities.

'This is not a coincidence. This is incredibly, incredibly interesting,' the presenter said while discussing the unit's documented lineage.

The presentation also highlighted the 1969 Bollender Memo, which stated that UFO reports affecting national security were processed outside the publicly known Project Blue Book system.
