I was a science fag who unknowingly worked for a corrupt tenured faculty member who asked me to fake some scientific data so he could report "equivocal" findings on a study and then get moar grant money to continue what would then become, going forward, fake research.
This happened right after I concluded a real research study and the guy didn't like the results (because they were definitive, meaning no further study was necessary).
This guy wanted moar grant money, though, so he pulled me into a private meeting at around 4:00 p.m. one day and asked me to alter the results of our pilot study right after I completed them.
I told him I'd need to think about it overnight because I had never falsified data before and I wanted to give it some thought.
In reality I just wanted to get out of his office as quickly as possible so that I could plan my escape from the job, because I never would intentionally do illegitimate scientific research for any reason.
So right after I left the guy's office I called my significant other and asked him to join me at the lab while I packed up my stuff so I could quit the next morning.
The two of us stayed late in the lab that night. I wrote out protocols, put the finishing touches on my research notebooks so someone else could take over, and I typed up my resignation letter.
When the crooked tenured faculty member showed up at 0830 hours the next day my significant other and I met him, stood at the doorway of his cluttered office, and handed him my resignation letter.
I didn't even introduce him to the SO.
We were like ice and the SO stood there like Rambo.
I handed the prick my resignation letter and got out quickly, not even giving the guy time to respond.
Within a year an investigation into the dude revealed lots of fraud and criminal conduct, so he lost his tenure.
Apparently my sudden departure had prompted the investigation I was respected, and then I suddenly dipped without explanation.
If this were to happen again, I'd be much more aggressive about exposing the fraudster on my way out, but back when this incident happen the Internet wasn't even around.
So it pays to the 1 who finds a new job.
The new job it all led me to was perfect for me, after all, 'cause it led me to much bigger and better research projects, including the ones I do through here.
TLDR - when presented with opportunities to cheat or commit fraud, run and expose the criminals. We can't live in a world where all the science is fake, and where research sponsors get to manufacture the outcomes of scientific studies.
