The 2026 Greater Manchester mayoral by-election is taking place today, Thursday, July 30, 2026, to elect a successor to Andy Burnham, who resigned after becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Voting is open across the region from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, with results expected on Friday, July 31.

 

This historic contest is the largest by-election in UK history, involving over two million eligible voters across Greater Manchester’s ten boroughs. It marks the first time a by-election has been held for a strategic authority mayor in the UK and the first time Andy Burnham has not appeared on the ballot since the role’s creation in 2017.

 

The election uses the supplementary vote (SV) system, allowing voters to mark a first and second preference. The seven candidates standing are:

 

Bev Craig (Labour and Co-operative Party)

Sian Astley (Reform UK)

Geraldine Coggins (Green Party)

Phil Eckersley (Conservative and Unionist Party)

Marcus Jonathan Farmer (Independent)

Richard Martin Kilpatrick (Liberal Democrats)

Marlon Scott West (Restore Britain)

Polling indicates Bev Craig holds a significant lead, with recent surveys showing her leading Reform UK’s Sian Astley by approximately 20 percentage points on first preferences. The winner will serve as mayor until the next scheduled election in 2028.
