There are a lot of roles a person can play within a society as enormous as the modern world, so when things get too confused I like to consider what sort of choices would seem reasonable from the perspective of an early man as part of a tribe of only 30 close family. It's hardly some magic solution, but it tends to work a whole lot better than thrashing about blindly in the dark.
