An interesting study.
A common English translation of Exodus 3:14 is "I AM that I AM"
Hebrew: Ehyeh asher Ehyeh
But the English translation has many interpretations and is very difficult to translate concisely owing to the indefinite tense of the Hebrew word "asher". Therefore, Ehyeh asher Ehyeh can be translated past, present or future. In other words, Ehyeh asher Ehyeh can be translated with equal validity into any and all of the following…
I WAS that I WAS
I AM that I WAS
I WILL BE that I WAS
I WAS that I AM
I AM that I AM
I WILL BE that I AM
I WAS that I WILL BE
I AM that I WILL BE
I WILL BE that I WILL BE
What's my point? My point is that whether you're a Jew or a Christian God's name should be important to you and attempting to cram meaning into English from Hebrew can lead one into potentially erroneous translations.
One might ask the question, "okay, so God's name is "I AM that I AM"? No, God's name is "I AM", or in the Hebrew, "Ehyeh".
Another question one might ask is, "okay, if God's name is "Ehyeh", then what is Christ's name? After all, Matthew 18:20 says "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." If God's name is important, wouldn't Christ's name also be important?
The answer to this very important question is not simply said to be "Jesus" owing to the fact that the word or name "Jesus" originates from a transliteration of the Hebrew thru the Greek and Latin. In Hebrew Christ's name is "Ehyeh Shua" with a literal English translation of "I AM Saves".
So my question to you is, "how can two or three Christians gather in Christ's name and claim to have Christ in the midst of them when not one of those Christians know Christ's name nor do they know the meaning of Christ's name?
