The labor force participation rate (LFPR) is the percentage of the working-age population (usually people aged 16 years and older) who are either employed or actively looking for work.

It is calculated as:

Labor Force Participation Rate=(Labor ForceWorking-age Population)ร—100

Where:

Labor force = Employed people + Unemployed people who are actively seeking work.

Working-age population = All people of working age, excluding those in institutions (such as prisons) and, in many countries, the armed forces.

Example:

Working-age population = 1,000 people

Employed = 600

Unemployed but actively seeking work = 100

Labor force = 600 + 100 = 700

Labor force participation rate = (700 รท 1,000) ร— 100 = 70%
