Investigators said the punch was so hard that it broke part of Gehrke’s dentures, which flew out and hit the ground.

Gehrke’s family said it was hard to see her in the hospital and that she looked “unrecognizable.”

“We had my 15-year-old son there with us and he wanted to see her,” said Gehrke’s daughter, Felicia. “She was beat so bad. We went in. I was like, ‘He can’t come up here and see her. There’s no way.’”

How many innocent people and family members have to be taken before the state figures out that you can’t rehabilitate people like this?” said Frankie Zills.

Our hearts are completely shattered. On July 29th days after the attack our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Susan was tragically and violently taken from us at the age of 61.

A life filled with so much love, warmth, and resilience was stolen by a senseless act of violence. Words cannot describe the pain and shock our family is navigating right now. After beating cancer twice, her life was taken by a violent individual with prior criminal charges of violence.

A Life Cut Short Just Before Retirement

Susan was a beacon of light to everyone who knew her. She spent her entire life working tirelessly, pouring her heart into her family, and putting others before herself. She was just on the brink of retiring—a milestone she had worked so hard for and was so excited to finally enjoy.

She was looking forward to relaxing, spending endless time with her children and grandchildren, and enjoying the peaceful next chapter of her life. Tragically, that future was stolen from her and from all of us who loved her so deeply.

Making this even harder, her 62nd birthday is right around the corner August 3rd Instead of celebrating this special day together and planning her retirement party, we are now forced to plan her funeral.

How You Can Help

In the wake of this sudden tragedy, our family is facing immense emotional pain as well as unexpected financial burdens. We want to give Susan the dignified, beautiful farewell she truly deserves, and support our family through the legal and personal transitions ahead.

We are raising funds to help cover:

Funeral and memorial service costs

End-of-life expenses and legal support

A memorial tribute on her upcoming birthday to honor her memory surrounded by family

Thank You for Your Support

If you are able to donate, any amount—no matter how small—will directly help relieve the burden on our family during this devastating time. If you cannot donate, we kindly ask that you share this page with your network and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your love, kindness, and support as we honor the beautiful life of Susan Gehrke.
