Overview

The Camp of the Saints (French: Le Camp des Saints) is a controversial 1973 French dystopian novel by Jean Raspail. The speculative fiction depicts the collapse of Western civilization triggered by a mass migration of one million impoverished people from India to France. The title references a passage in the Book of Revelation regarding the apocalypse.

Plot Summary

The narrative begins in Calcutta, where a Belgian aid worker agrees to transport a massive crowd of desperate Indians to Europe on a fleet of dilapidated ships. As the "armada" sails toward the West, the novel details the political and social paralysis of Western nations. Despite opportunities to intercept the fleet, Western leaders and populations, driven by humanitarian guilt and fear of being labeled racist, refuse to use force.

Upon arrival in France, the migrants overwhelm the country. The story describes the rapid disintegration of social order, the flight of white populations, and the eventual overthrow of Western governments by the newcomers. The novel concludes with the total capitulation of the last Western holdouts, including Switzerland, symbolizing the end of European civilization as portrayed by the author.

Originally published in France by Éditions Robert Laffont, the novel was first translated into English by Norman Shapiro in 1975. After decades of being out of print, it returned to bestseller lists in 2011 and saw a new English translation by Ethan Rundell released in September 2025.
