In an interview with Jim Ladd in April 1977, Frank Zappa stated:

“The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it’s profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.”

Zappa used this theatrical metaphor to suggest that perceived liberties in society are maintained only as long as they serve the interests of those in power. He argued that when maintaining the appearance of freedom becomes too costly or inconvenient for authorities, they will abandon the facade entirely, revealing the rigid, unyielding reality of control (the "brick wall") that has always been present.
