Anon feels like pushing veterans into trucking is doing them a disservice unless there are big changes coming soon. There is no shortage of labor in trucking. People leave trucking all the time because of the shitty treatment and worse pay. The government penalizes you for having a CDL. There is no separation of your professional and personal lives, you are always a trucker and you get penalized more harshly for certain things if you have a CDL. And welcome to never carrying a firearm legally again. Because of the patchwork nature of 2nd amendment violations across the US you can't legally carry a firearm across state lines without adhering to some ridiculous infringement that dictates how you can store or carry it in your vehicle or on your person. Then all the communist trucking companies that forbid you to have one at all or you'll be fired. And all the communist shippers and receivers that ban firearms on their properties, which has the force of law in some states. Companies that expect you to work 14 hour days, sometimes without breaks, and 70 hour weeks. It's not optional to work that much, it's mandatory. A camera facing you 24/7 that corporate watches you through. Hours and hours of training that's unpaid. You can work a 12 hour day, without training, and gross $90 before taxes. The expectation that you buy your own tools and only get a free shower every three days when you fill your tanks. It's a high risk minimum wage job when you factor in not getting overtime pay. The pay gets slightly better as you get years of experience but it's still not great. It's true that Veterans are well suited to being truckers. But being a trucker and working for a trucking company are two different things. If this isn't some 4D chess trojan horse thing then I don't understand it. If trump wants to do truckers a solid though, build some parking. Or create a new system on the interstates where truckers can park.
The high suicide rate from all of that is also an issue. One company is around 0.05% if I'm doing my math right. Increasing the veteran suicide rate might not be great. If there's a shortage of labor somewhere in the trucking industry, it's because the trucking companies caused it. I've heard the turnover rate is somewhere close to 90% so it's hard to believe there's any shortage anywhere.
