Sen. Bernie Moreno says former son-in-law Rep. Max Miller ‘should not serve’ in Congress over abuse allegations

Ohio GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno on Sunday said his former son-in-law, Republican Rep. Max Miller, “should not serve” in Congress because of abuse allegations levied by Moreno’s daughter against Miller.

“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help,” Moreno said on X. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter.”

“He should not serve in the House of Representatives,” Moreno said.

Moreno’s statement came shortly after Miller appeared on a livestream in which he denied allegations of abuse and said he’s staying in his race. “I’m not getting out of this race, and I’m winning in November,” Miller said.

The statement from Moreno marked his first extensive public comment on the abuse allegations that have embroiled Miller for months and that could threaten the congressman’s chances to be reelected to represent Ohio’s 7th District. President Donald Trump won the district by 11 points in 2024, and it has long been considered a solidly safe Republican seat.

Responding to his former father-in-law’s statement, Miller said on X: “You know this isn’t true and the only reason you are speaking out now is to hide from your own media circus.”

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said Sunday that he would “look at” the domestic abuse allegations against Miller.

“I’m going to look at it,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One when asked whether the Ohio Republican should resign. “I mean, so far, it’s accusations.”

Miller was married to Moreno’s daughter, Emily Moreno, from 2022 to 2025, and they share a daughter. Their divorce led to a highly contentious and public custody battle.

In a statement responding to Miller’s livestream, during which Miller said no court or government agency had substantiated the allegations, a spokesperson for Emily Moreno said there is a “documented trove of evidence that Miller has a history of violent and dangerous behavior and no amount of victim shaming will change that.”

“It is despicable and abhorrent that Miller lied on an unhinged and humiliating video for their daughter to watch one day,” Stefan Mychajliw said. “No loving parent would have ever used their daughter as a PR pawn to save their own political career.”

Republican control of the House could be imperiled if Miller loses the race against his Democratic opponent, Brian Poindexter.

If Miller were to drop out of the race, the deadline for the Ohio GOP to replace him on this fall’s ballot is August 10.

The allegations of sexual misconduct against the Oscar winner Jared Leto that came out last week in a BBC documentary were not a surprise to some in Hollywood. This was another case of, in certain circles, “everybody knows,” as the industry saying goes. Yet that widespread knowledge has been insufficient to produce meaningful consequences.

Hollywood has always been a town of dark rumors about the terrible, often abusive behavior of some of its most prominent citizens, many of which turn out to be true. As a journalist covering the entertainment business, I’ve been made aware of these open secrets constantly. But that didn’t mean I could necessarily write about them. There was an entire system in place to keep the victims quiet and keep any revelations out of the public eye.

That familiar dynamic played out when it comes to Mr. Leto. The BBC documentary, titled “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret,” delves into allegations of misconduct involving the actor and singer, building impressively on 2025 reporting by Elena Clavarino in AirMail — which Mr. Leto denied at the time — and compiling more than 120 online allegations relating to harassment and sexual misconduct. The documentary also depicts an array of enablers: people who would make sure teenage girls were brought backstage, invited to afterparties and escorted to hotel rooms. The film paints a damning portrait of a man who used his Hollywood fame and rock-star persona to initiate troubling physical and verbal contact with women, most very young, all powerless compared with him.

Mr. Leto did not initially reply to the BBC’s inquiries, and after the documentary was released, he issued this statement: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

This response follows what’s now become a familiar pattern. Once, a celebrity might have issued an aggrieved or long rebuttal or a strenuous apology, but a new playbook has emerged. It is fairly consistent, often undertaken in conjunction with a pricey assortment of law firms and spin doctors: Ignore everything or stonewall with “no comment.” Maybe deny the allegations with a succinct sentence or two. Then either unleash hell on a publication and reporter in an attempt to quash the reporting or say nothing further and wait for the scandal to pass.

Hollywood has an ignoble history of covering up stars’ horrible behavior, but in the wake of #MeToo, a new well-oiled anti-accountability machine has flourished. The shrinking array of publications dedicated to covering Hollywood are not only often in rough financial shape, but they’re also dependent on celebrity coverage, so they’re vulnerable to being intimidated by threats of losing access to other celebrities, or they’re likely to be tempted by enticing stories that will happen only if the outlet agrees to play ball.

The new crisis-management playbook involves simply riding out horrible rumors and fostering a counternarrative that discounts reports as untruthful and unreliable. Law firms persuade survivors to recant while P.R. operatives muddy the waters online by making efforts to “adjust the narrative in real time,” as one firm’s services were described in documents from the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni case.

Thanks to years of reporting on these topics, as well as writing a book on power and complicity in Hollywood, I’m all too familiar with these scenarios. I also appear onscreen in “Hollywood’s Dark Secret” to explain some of the power imbalances and abusive dynamics that fester in high-profile creative enterprises. When Alice McShane, the director of the BBC film, reached out to me, the queries she and the lead reporter, Jessica Sartenaer, had essentially boiled down to one big question: If everybody knew about the rumors about Mr. Leto, then why was nothing ever done?

There are many answers to that question, and here’s one honest one: I don’t know. No victimizer seems worthy of the industry’s protection. No level of artistic achievement makes putting up with horrific behavior worthwhile. But there are other reasons for this kind of industrywide strategic apathy.

For over a century, almost all of the incentive structures in the commercial entertainment industries have allowed patterns of misbehavior and rewarded silence. Physical and mental abuse and boundary crossing, especially by men, are tolerated as artistic passion and creative exploration. If you’re opposed to people’s passion or their process — if you don’t celebrate how they move through the world — then you just don’t understand art. And when a lot of people make a percentage off the earnings of one famous individual, the capacity for denial is vast.

California Democratic Party endorses billionaire tax

The California Democratic Party on Sunday endorsed a November ballot measure to tax billionaires’ wealth, bucking Gov. Gavin Newsom and the influential labor unions that oppose it.

The party’s executive board narrowly voted to back the measure after earlier votes to endorse it and remain neutral failed. Rep. Maxine Waters attended the board meeting in San Diego, encouraging key yes votes to get Proposition 40 over the finish line, according to three people with knowledge of her efforts granted anonymity to discuss the politically fraught issue. The measure had previously garnered few endorsements from high-ranking elected officials in the party, including just one member of California’s congressional delegation, Rep. Ro Khanna.

Proponents of the tax initially fell just short of the 60 percent threshold needed to get the party’s backing, but later picked up a handful of votes to secure an endorsement. SEIU-UHW, the union that spearheaded the one-time, 5 percent levy on billionaires, quickly cast the outcome as evidence that rank-and-file Democrats were lining up behind the progressive proposal.

“This endorsement puts to rest the idea that California democrats are not united by the billionaire tax — they are,” said Dave Regan, president of SEIU United Healthcare Workers West, said in a statement. “Polling shows that more than 80% of registered Democrats support this critical solution to our healthcare crisis and now the Democratic party of California has officially embraced that strong support through this endorsement.”

Both sides raced to whip support ahead of the weekend vote, rolling out endorsements and polls to bolster their respective cases. A document shared with POLITICO and characterized as being used by the opposition broke down in detail how different party members might vote and who could be persuaded.

Waters’ support — adding to previous backing from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders — seemed to energize party activists, some of whom chanted her name during the votes, according to one attendee. A representative for Waters’ campaign, when reached, did not immediately comment.

The party also voted to oppose two billionaire-backed measures to undercut Prop 40.

The wealth tax has divided labor unions, drawing opposition from the California Teachers Association and other powerful groups, in part because it has complicated efforts to extend an income tax on the wealthy that funds schools — a measure that will also appear on the November ballot. SEIU-UHW has pitched its wealth tax as a way to offset federal health care funding cuts, but opponents have warned the one-time levy will have unintended consequences, including driving ultrawealthy residents and their tax dollars out of state.

“Governor Newsom, Democratic Candidate for Governor Xavier Becerra, the California Teachers Association, California Professional Firefighters, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and so many others are standing together against Prop. 40 because it’s bad for our budget, bad for our economy, and bad for our future,” a spokesperson for one arm of the opposition said in a statement after the vote. “We need smart, durable solutions to our biggest challenges, not unreliable, untested schemes that shortchange healthcare, education, and public safety.”
