Saudi crown prince stops Trumpās massive Iran strike with one phone call
Saudis Issue Ultimatum to Trump on Behalf of GCC
Amid strong rumors that Netanyahu had already agreed with Trump to resume bombings against Iran, Gulf countries like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were already working behind the scenes.
Qatar, in particular, had been warning about the imminent risks to its massive infrastructure and natural gas exports.
This, however, was not enough to dissuade Trump, who was moving forward with his plan, especially since the two major American natural gas exporting companies are benefiting from the scenario and were donors to Trumpās campaign. The UAE had also been warning about the risks to its facilities, but with little progress.
In the last 72 hours, these countries informed Washington that local intelligence reports confirmed Iran had already mapped oil fields, refineries, and power plants across all GCC members for an immediate counter-attack should the US initiate the bombings, but also to no avail.
It was Mohammed bin Salman who aligned the GCCās position. On Saturday, he placed a call to Trump and warned that Iran would respond to any bombings by directly attacking the energy infrastructure of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf neighbors. This was nothing Trump and Netanyahu did not already know and had not already ignored in advance when deciding on the attack.
But the Saudi leader went further: on behalf of the GCC, he expressly requested that Trump back down from plans for large-scale attacks against Iranian territory. He directly demanded clarification on Washington and Tel Avivās plan of action, arguing that missteps at this juncture would destabilize the global energy market for extended periods.
In doing so, he implicitly conveyed two things:
The first is that, if destroyed, the GCC economies would be unable to honor the signed agreements, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), and long-term structural partnerships celebrated during Trumpās administration, values that range between $2 trillion and $3 trillion. This is not to mention the billions injected directly into the businesses of Donald Trump himself and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
To the wise, it became clear that these resources could be redirected toward investments in other blocs, including the Chinese.
The second is that, if Trump refused the request of the Saudis, acting as spokespersons for the Gulf and pressed ahead, he would be solely responsible for the destruction of local economies and a global economic crisis. Faced with structural disaster in their own territories, Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries would close their airspace to American fighter jets and revoke permissions for the use of logistical bases in the region.
It was these two implicit messages that deterred Trump. Everything else he had already evaluated and, nonetheless, decided to proceed with the attack.

Israeli Finance Minister Requests Netanyahu Approve Three Jewish Settlements In Gaza
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Sunday repeated his call for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to approve the establishment of three Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip, as senior Israeli ministers continue to speak openly about their plans for permanent Israeli control of the Palestinian territory.
Smotrich made the call in a post on X, in which he referenced the withdrawal of settlements from Gaza and from an area of the northern West Bank, which he calls "northern Samaria," a policy known as the "disengagement." Israel is re-establishing the settlements in the northern West Bank, and he is calling for the same in Gaza.
In the post, Smotrich referenced the upcoming Israeli elections, warning that a "left-wing" government won't expand settlements as aggressively.
"Before us stands the choice, between a right-wing government that will continue the momentum of construction and expand it, and a dangerous left-wing government that openly declares its intention to evacuate settlements and outposts and to promote a 'political agreement,'"7 Smotrich said.
"And from northern Samaria ā to Gaza! The Settlement Administration under my leadership is prepared to establish 3 settlements in the northern sector of the Gaza Strip, and I call on the Prime Minister to give the green light to the move. Together we correct the sin of the disengagement," he added.
Smotrich also holds a ministerial position in the Israeli Defense Ministry, where he oversees the Settlement Administration. He first announced in June that the body had drawn up plans for three settlements in Gaza and was just waiting for the green light from Netanyahu.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, a member of Netanyahuās Likud party, has also said that Israel will establish three "Nachala outposts" - a type of settlement that starts as a community for IDF soldiers with the goal of establishing a permanent civilian presence.
Katz recently boasted of the destruction of Gaza cities during a visit to the northern part of the Strip. When asked how the view of the destruction made him feel, the Israeli minister said, "I feel good. Thank God. This is all the result of a deliberate policy aimed at removing threats. Instead of the raid methodāgoing in and outāthe IDF is inside, the terrorists are outside, and the houses are destroyed."

āSurprisingā how quickly Chinaās military is closing gap with US: analyst Lyle Goldstein
Beijingās challenge is to resist temptation to build the PLA into a āhammer looking for a nailā, former US Naval War College professor says
My view is that Chinaās military has made tremendous progress in the process of modernisation over the last 10 years. Itās almost like an aircraft going full throttle or a car thatās going into fourth gear. It really is the pace that has picked up a lot. We had an inkling that this was under way and that major results were going to be forthcoming. But here they are. I have to say, as a military analyst, itās very impressive. I might even go as far as to say that it could even be unprecedented in its scale and dimensions, and also implications.

What's behind China's recent spike in COVID-19 cases? And is it anything to worry about?
China has seen a spike in COVID-19 in recent weeks, overtaking influenza as the top respiratory pathogen for the first time this year, but most patients experienced mild symptoms, while the medical authorities said data suggested the infection rate was significantly lower than last year's peak.
The spread of the Omicron NB.1.8.1 variant has reached a "moderate transmission level", according to the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC does not give a weekly total of new infections, but its most recent data - covering the week of July 13-19 - showed the positive rate for COVID-19 tests had reached 16.3 percent, an increase of 4.3 percentage points compared with the previous week. Meanwhile, the positive rate for influenza was 12.6 percent, a fall of 0.9 points.
The positive rate is the percentage of all diagnostic tests conducted in hospital clinics that come back positive for a specific pathogen.
Last month, mainland China recorded 79,000 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 130 severe cases and one death, according to the CDC.
The CDC advised elderly people and those with underlying health conditions to take preventive measures, such as wearing masks in public places and hospitals.
It also encouraged people with weakened immune systems, such as pregnant women, young children, the elderly and patients with chronic diseases, to get vaccinated.
The COVID-19 and influenza viruses used to be more common in winter and spring, but their spread now seemed increasingly unpredictable as the summer heat led people to spend more time in air-conditioned rooms, creating a "similar closed transmission environment", Peng Jie, deputy director of the infectious diseases department at Southern Medical University's Nanfang Hospital, told National Business Daily.
"The conditions for virus transmission in summer are converging with those in winter, leading to an increase in COVID-19 and influenza infections," Peng said.
Li Tongzeng, chief doctor of the infectious diseases department at Beijing Youan Hospital, told Global Times that travel during the summer holidays could further raise the risk of transmission.
Both Peng and Li said the public need not be alarmed at the current spread as the rate of severe cases and mortality from COVID-19 had not increased proportionally, which meant that although the virus continued to mutate and become more infectious, the virulence of the new variants remained low.
According to media reports, most patients experience symptoms such as a fever and sore throat and typically recover within five to seven days.
Peng added that the current positive rate was "significantly lower" than the peak in 2025.
According to CDC data, the positive rate hit over 20 percent at its peak in May last year then saw a steady decline to around 10 percent by August.
Peng said that as immunity from previous infections and vaccines gradually faded, the number of people at risk of infection would increase.
He said that based on recent trends, the time taken for the disease to spread was expected to be "significantly longer" compared with last year, adding that there may be "sporadic outbreaks" in the coming months.
Earlier this month, Chang Zhaorui, from the CDC, said Omicron NB.1.8.1 remained the dominant strain in China. Monitoring had not detected any new strains that could pose additional public health risks, Chang added.
