According to a report published in The Banker (July 8, 2026), Chinese banks, in fact, constitute seven of the top ten banks in the world. The Chinese government controls all of them. JP Morgan Chase ranks fifth, Bank of America sixth, and Citigroup eighth.

The top four banks:
Industrial Commercial Bank ($6.1 trillion)
Chinese Construction Bank ($5.4 trillion)
Agricultural Bank ($5.3 trillion)
Bank of China ($4.6 trillion)
Their specific roles: financing the Belt and Road Initiative, domestic infrastructure, the Green Agricultural Initiative, and the internationalization of the Renminbi.
Collectively, Chinese banks hold $69.5 trillion in assets and reported $392 billion in pre-tax earnings as of the end of 2025, outperforming their American counterparts.
