The FBI once investigated Trump as a potential Russian asset, according to newly declassified documents.
These documents reveal that the bureau launched a secret counterintelligence investigation into Donald Trump after he fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
Codenamed "Oxferd Comma" — misspelling and all — the probe was opened over alleged national security concerns, with investigators actively probing whether the sitting president was a "Russian asset" being directed or controlled by Moscow. FBI memos show agents were also targeting Trump for potential obstruction of justice.
Comey, an Obama appointee who spearheaded both the Hillary Clinton email probe and the controversial "Crossfire Hurricane" investigation, was publicly ousted over his handling of the Clinton saga. But behind closed doors, these newly released White House documents reveal his firing triggered one of the most drastic bureau operations into a sitting president in U.S. history.
