Senate Confirms the “Queen of Mandating Vaccines” Dr. Erica Schwartz as Your New CDC Director in a 51–44 Vote
Is Dr. Erica Schwartz new cdc director, under the supervision of RFKjr?
Yes
Dr. Erica G. Schwartz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 5, 2026 (51–44 vote) as the permanent Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She assumed the role that day and is the agency’s first full-time/permanent director in nearly a year.

She previously served as Deputy Surgeon General (2019–2021) during the first Trump administration, is a retired rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and has a background as a physician (MD), with additional degrees in public health (MPH) and law (JD). She is the first Black woman to hold the CDC director position.
The CDC is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) is the HHS Secretary, so the CDC Director operates under his supervision as part of the HHS organizational structure. (Note that her predecessor, Susan Monarez, was removed by Kennedy in 2025 after roughly a month over policy disagreements.)
