Navy ships used it without problems for a long time. Only the guys who replaced the piping and had to wrestle with it got asbestosis, because nobody knew to wear masks. Ir was on drilling rigs until the 1980's, and we were taught that if we had to replace piping, we masked up and blocked the area, removed it and sent ashore.

 

There are thousands of houses that still have asbestos siding on them today. Once it is made, set, cast - it is fine. Destroying it and making dust is what gets in lungs.

 

Agree forced removal due to legislation caused more problems than just stopping production.
