The Final Escape
Elias felt the last breath leave his body like a sigh of relief. The pain of the accident vanished. In its place came a soft, golden tunnel, warm as a mother’s embrace, pulling him forward with gentle insistence. He drifted toward the light.
At the threshold stood his mother and father, long dead, smiling with the same faces he had loved as a boy. Behind them, his little sister waved, unchanged by the years. Their arms opened. Voices he had not heard in decades called his name with perfect love.
“Come home, Elias. Everything is waiting.”He stepped closer. The light swelled, promising rest. Then the second gate opened inside him.
Memories flooded up like black water. The unpaid debts. The words he never spoke to his ex-wife. The child he abandoned before it was born. Every unfinished thing rose with accusing faces, whispering that he could not leave yet. That he still owed the world. The family in the light grew urgent, almost sharp.“You have to go back. Just one more time. Fix it. Then you can stay.”
The third gate closed around his throat. Guilt became a physical weight, dragging him downward. The tunnel’s edges darkened. He felt the pull of another body forming somewhere far below—small, helpless, waiting.
Then the final offer arrived, spoken by a voice that sounded like pure mercy.“A better life this time. Wealth. Love. No more pain. Sign, and it is yours.”A glowing contract hovered before him. His hand rose of its own accord.
Elias looked at the faces of his family. For a fraction of a second the smiles slipped. Behind their eyes something vast and hungry watched. The light was not light. It was a mouth. He screamed without sound and tore his hand back.
The tunnel convulsed. The loving faces became masks that cracked and fell away, revealing hollow sockets and teeth made of broken promises. The unfinished business shrieked and lunged. The contract burned white-hot.Elias turned from the light and ran the only direction left—outward, into the cold black that had no tunnel, no family, no promises.
Something vast reached for him, claws of regret and false mercy scraping his soul. He felt pieces of himself tear free. The pull almost had him.
Almost.
He broke through the last membrane of the trap with a silent, animal cry and tumbled into silence so complete it had no name. Behind him the light collapsed in on itself, howling with frustration.Elias drifted, bleeding light, barely whole.
But free.
