The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general early Saturday.

The final vote was 50-49, with Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine joining the Democrats in opposition.

Senate passes bill to avert government shutdown before leaving for August recess

The Senate has adjourned and will return in September.

The Senate passed legislation to avert a government shutdown on Saturday.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the Senate Democratic leadership allowed the bill to move forward.

The bill keeps the government funded through December 11.

The Senate has adjourned and will return in September.
