A rare sight over the Netherlands: the D-LZFN, a Zeppelin NT (LZ N07-101), filmed on 9 August 2026 from the observation tower at Kootwijkerzand.

The airship carries a range of measuring instruments slung underneath it. With these, researchers from Wageningen University & Research and their German colleagues measure things like exhaust gases, particulate matter and CO2 in the air. These substances are produced partly by the forest and partly by traffic and industry, and together they form smog, which eventually disperses again. Exactly how — and how fast — that happens is still largely unknown. By combining measurements from the Zeppelin with readings from towers just above the treetops, the researchers hope to better predict smog levels, so they can warn people, for example, to take it easy exercising on high-smog days.
