Employers Using J1 Student Visas for Seasonal Work Pay NO Social Security Taxes

I did not know this until I saw it mentioned on X (formerly Twitter).When a company hires J1 student temporary or season employees, they do not have to pay the 7.5% FICA or Social Security tax on the wages.

If a company hires a seasonal American student, they have to pay the 7.5%.If the company hires a foreign student, they don’t.This creates a perverse incentive for private equity firms, companies or corporations to hire foreign seasonal workers. This is true, I checked it out.

Apparently, this is now the common approach within the hospitality industry to save money and increase profit from payrolls. Unfortunately, this approach puts young Americans at a disadvantage when seeking summer or short-term seasonal employment.

For fiscal Year 2025: The U.S. State Department processed 506,142 applications and successfully issued 451,803 J-1 visas.

Now, obviously there may be some regions or areas where there are not enough young people to fill the jobs.However, if you do the math that 7.5% employer contribution saved is a lot of incentive for the corporation to avoid hiring seasonal American workers.

One student making $20/hr x 500 hours worked (over 3 months) = $10,000 payroll. The company has to pay an additional $750 in social security if the student is American. The $750 is saved if they use a foreign J1 student worker.

If the hospitality organization hires 20 seasonal workers for 3 months, using the J1 visa process saves them $15,000 in taxes.

A private equity group, multinational owner or corporation running the business is likely to be looking at the bottom line.

Additionally, this J1 entry allows the overall immigration system to be abused if the person doesn’t leave the USA at the conclusion of their employment. How many illegal aliens are created by those who enter under a J1 visa and never leave?

Four employees of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) have been wounded by Ukrainian landmines since the start of the week, the CEO of Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom has said.

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and the adjacent city of Energodar have been targeted by Ukraine on multiple occasions with artillery and drones since Russia took control of the facility in March 2022.

Two victims of landmines have been hospitalized in critical condition, with one of them requiring a leg amputation, Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev told journalists on Thursday. Two others were lucky to escape with light wounds, he added.

Ukrainian forces began remotely mining the area near the ZNPP and Energodarwhere its employees reside four months ago, the nuclear chief said.

“Every night, drones drop ‘Lepestok’ (Petal) mines onto the main road leading into the city as well as onto routes used by personnel to reach the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and key intersections,”Likhachev stated.

The Rosatom chief described the attacks as “another attempt by the authorities in Kiev to drive residents out of Energodar and make the routine operations of the nuclear power plant impossible.”

The mines used by Ukraine were apparently Soviet-era PFM-1 anti-personnel munitions. The small butterfly-shaped devices got their nickname due to their typical green or brown color, so as to be camouflaged among the grass and foliage.

‘Lepestok’ mines are typically scattered in large quantities, either by aircraft or artillery. Designed to maim rather than kill, they are capable of blowing off or disfiguring a victim’s foot.

The PFM-1 is banned under the 1997 Ottawa Convention, to which Ukraine is a party, due to posing an increased threat to civilians.

In July, a Ukrainian drone hit a ZNPP service vehicle on the edge of the plant’s industrial site,killing its chief engineer, Aleksandr Yakovlev, and his driver. At the time, Likhachevcalled the strike a “deliberate terrorist act.”

According to the Rosatom CEO, more than a dozen employees of the plant have been killed and many others wounded in Ukrainian attacksover the past three months. Kiev’s actions pose the “real danger of a massive nuclear incident”affecting parts of Russia, Ukraine, and the EU, he warned.

Moscow has repeatedly criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has experts deployed at the ZNPP, for acknowledging the attacks on the facility but stopping short of blaming Ukraine for them.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharov previously said that “what is required of the agency’s leadership isn’t verbal gymnastics or false political correctness, but clear assessments and concrete steps aimed at preventing the spread of threats to nuclear security.”

Ukraine too corrupt to join the EU – diplomat to FT

The country ranks too high on the global graft ranking to be fast-tracked into the bloc, a senior official has reportedly said

The EU cannot fast-track Ukraine’s membership bid asallowing such a large and corrupt country into the bloc would make a “mockery of the entire project,” a senior diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Financial Times for an article published on Friday.

Kiev was granted EU candidate status soon after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, and VladimirZelensky has increasingly demanded that that the process be fast-tracked, potentially allowing Ukraine to join as early as 2027. However, multiple EU leaders haveruled out so fast an accession, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggesting an associate membership for Ukraine – an idea Zelensky has rejected.

“You can’t bring a country of 40 million people that’s at 104 on the global corruption list into the EU.It would make a mockery of the entire project,” FT cited the EU diplomat as saying.

Ukraine’s “biggest impact on the enlargement debate, by far, ismaking it clear just how unprepared we are for new members,” FT cited the diplomat as saying.

EU admissioncriteria require candidates to have stable institutionsthat guarantee democracy, rule of law, and measures against corruption and organized crime.Ukraine ranked 104th out of 182 countriesin Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index, and even some of its staunchest backers in the EUsay that the country would need years to meet the bloc’s accession requirements.

Ukraine has seen several major corruption scandals of late. Last November, the country's Western-backed national anti-graft agencies charged Zelensky’s longtime business associate TimurMindich with embezzling around $100 millionfrom the country’s nuclear operator Energoatom. Two ministers and the Ukrainian leader’s chief of staff were ousted in the aftermath.

Last month, Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) accused several senior officials in Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry oflarge-scalefraud, embezzlement and money laundering aimed at stealing foreign money.

“Corruption in Ukraine has become a byword.It permeates the entire Ukrainian power structure, including Zelensky’s inner circle and Zelensky himself,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier this year.

Meanwhile, ordinary Ukrainians are dying in “meat-grinder assaults” for “Mindich’s gold-plated toilets” and “luxury jewelry” for Zelensky’s wife Olena, she said.

(Even if Zelensky and Ukraine win the war with Russia, which will never happen, Ukraine wil never be welcome in the EU.)

A German journalist asked Vladimir Zelensky at a press conference in Belgrade how Europeans could help Kiev “kill more Russians,”prompting Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to raise his eyebrows in apparent disbelief.

The provocative question came from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung correspondent Michael Martens during a joint press conference following Zelensky’s talks with Vucic on Saturday.

“Can you tell us Europeans what can we concretely do to help you to kill more Russians?”Martens asked.

He hastily added he meant “more Russian soldiers, of course,” before asking whether the two leaders had discussed military cooperation.

Footage shows Vucic raising his eyebrows in apparent disbelief as he hears the question.

Clips of the exchange quickly went viral on social media, triggering a wave of angry reactions. Some users denounced the wording as offensive andaccused Martens of “incitement to hatred.” Others branded him a “Nazi,” noting that his grandfather served as an officer on a Wehrmacht command staff during World War II – a fact that Martens himself has acknowledged.

Martens later doubled down on X, insisting there was nothing “scandalous” or “shocking” about his wording and expressing surprise at the backlash. “It is not scandalous to ask the Ukrainian President how Europe can help Ukraine to kill more Russians. That is what is needed,”he wrote. “Outside Barbieworld, this is how wars are fought.”

Although Martens’ question was directed at Zelensky,Vucic answered first.

“We did not discuss military cooperation today,” the Serbian president said. “What happens when the war ends is another matter.And speaking about killing, I hope all killing will end.”

Zelensky, meanwhile, used the question to reiterate his demands that Kiev’s Western backers send more money and slap more sanctions on Moscow.

Serbia remains one of the few European countries to maintain close ties with Moscow since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022. As an EU candidate state, however, it has faced pressure from Brussels to distance itself from Russia. Last month, Vucic accused the EU of trying to “govern Serbia by email” and dictate its foreign relations. Ahead of his meeting with Zelensky, he reiterated that Belgrade will follow its own course and not join sanctions against Russia.

Martens’ question comes amid growing Russophobia in the West, ranging from anti-Russian rhetoric by politicians, journalists and other public figures to restrictions on Russian media, culture, and language and the destruction of Soviet memorials.

Just this week, Polish President Karol Nawrocki made his own remarks about killing Russians, telling a rally in Warsaw that helping Ukraine do so was in Poland’s strategic interest. “Wherever the Moskal is being fought, Poland helps,” he said, using a historic derogatory term for Russians.

Commenting on the remark, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calledsuch outbursts “clinical Russophobia,” while lamenting that this had become “the norm” for many in the West.

Don Nelson, 5-time NBA champion and pioneer of ‘Nellie Ball’ as coach, dies at 86

Don Nelson, a five-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics as a player and one of the winningest coaches in league history, died Sunday at 86, his family announced in a statement.

“On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family,” the statement read. “Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories.”

A cause of death was not shared, but The Dallas Morning News reported that Nelson had a stroke roughly three weeks ago.

The pioneer of “Nellie Ball,” Nelson was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2012 after posting 1,335 career regular-season victories in the NBA — a win total that trails only Gregg Popovich (1,390) for the league record.

Nelson began his coaching career as an assistant in 1976 with the Milwaukee Bucks and is credited with developing a fast-paced brand of offensive basketball that relied on smaller, more athletic players to seek mismatches and outrun opponents. His success led to his being named to the NBA’s lists of the top 10 (1996) and top 15 (2021) coaches of all time, and his offensive philosophies still influence basketball today.

Nelson served as head coach for four franchises during a 31-season NBA coaching career. That included 11 seasons each with the Milwaukee Bucks (540-344) and Golden State Warriors (422-443), as well as eight seasons with the Dallas Mavericks (339-251) and one campaign with the New York Knicks in 1995-96 that saw him fired with a 34-25 record and replaced by Jeff Van Gundy.

On April 7, 2010, with his 1,333rd victory on the sidelines, Nelson passed Lenny Wilkens to set the NBA record for most regular-season coaching wins before finishing his career with a record of 1,335-1,063, a .556 win percentage.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Nellie’s family, friends, former players, colleagues, fans and all who knew him,” read a statement from the Bucks, with whom Nelson won two of his three NBA Coach of the Year awards. “He will always be a treasured part of Bucks history and one of the most influential figures the game has ever known.”

Nelson was a central figure in helping resurrect a Mavericks franchise that went 10 straight seasons without a playoff appearance between 1990 and 2000. In 1998, he was instrumental in Dallas acquiring Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash in separate draft-night trades, moves that set the stage for the Mavs to become one of the NBA’s highest-scoring and most exciting teams of the early 2000s. The Mavericks reached the Western Conference finals in 2003, and Nelson stepped down two years later with 18 games left in the 2004-05 season.

“You didn’t just draft me. You believed in me,” Nowitzki wrote Sunday in a post on X. “You saw things in my game before I ever realized I could do them. I’ve said it a million times and I will always say it: I don’t think my career could have turned out how it did without you being my first coach and giving me the freedom to play my game. I can only say THANK YOU. For everything.”

While none of the teams he coached won an NBA title, Nelson had 18 playoff appearances and a 75-91 career postseason record. Among his biggest postseason triumphs was his “We Believe” Warriors’ first-round upset of the very same Mavericks he coached just two seasons earlier.

Dallas entered that 2007 postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, but Nelson’s eighth-seeded Warriors outsted them in six games before eventually falling to the Utah Jazz in the second round. It was the highlight of Nelson’s second stint with Golden State, where his coaching career eventually ended after the 2009-10 season.

“Nellie left an indelible mark on our franchise with his approach to the game,” a statement from the Warriors read. “From the Run TMC era to the ‘We Believe’ team in 2007, his teams captivated Bay Area basketball fans and created some of the most memorable moments in Warriors history.”

Despite never reaching the mountaintop as an NBA coach, Nelson experienced championship glory in his 14-season NBA playing career, helping the Celtics hang five banners over an 11-year stint. Initially drafted in the third round of the 1962 NBA Draft by the Chicago Zephyrs, Nelson played just one season in the Windy City before being acquired off waivers by the Los Angeles Lakers.

After two unremarkable seasons in L.A., Nelson signed with the Celtics as a free agent in 1965, and his game and role grew. During his first season under new coach Red Auerbach, Nelson posted averages of 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds to help the Celtics win the 1965-66 championship. He contributed as a sixth man for a roster that included Boston legends Bill Russell, Sam Jones, John Havlicek, Satch Sanders and KC Jones. In 11 seasons as a Celtic, Nelson averaged at least 10 points nine times.

He was even more dangerous in the playoffs, averaging 11.1 points on 50 percent shooting and 4.8 rebounds in 134 career postseason games for the Celtics. He’s among 26 players to win at least five NBA championships — 11 of those players did so with Boston — and his No. 19 jersey was retired by the franchise in 1978.

Auerbach told the New York Times back in 1974 that he had always taken a liking to Nelson as a player, due in part to how he positioned himself on the court.

“But more than that, he has great knowledge of the game,” Auerbach said. “Someday he’s going to be a coach, and a very good one. He knows the game, and he plays it hard.”

Nelson was born on May 15, 1940, in Muskegon, Mich., to Arvid and Agnes Nelson, who raised him and two sisters on his grandfather’s farm close to Sherrard, Ill. The family eventually moved to nearby Rock Island, Ill., where Nelson attended middle school and fell in love with basketball.

He caught the eye of Iowa Hawkeyes coach Sharm Scheuerman after helping lead Rock Island to a 47-7 record over his final two high school seasons and eventually landed in Iowa City. There, Nelson averaged 21.1 points and 10.9 rebounds over three varsity seasons from 1959-62, and was inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Famein 1989. His career scoring average remains a program record.
