That's what many said when Qaf, the AI Islamic research tool, launched recently. It's what gets said almost every time a Muslim builder ships something ambitious.
Abdellatif Abdelfattah, who is behind Qaf, was my roommate in San Francisco.
So let me say the uncomfortable part first: Some of the critique is valid. Qaf should not be giving AI fatwas and, at times, it still seems to.
But seeing how personal and dismissive some of the critique became, I want to give you the full picture of the person.
We shared an apartment right after I got back from studying in Mauritania, him at Twitter, me at Google. I remember him distinctly asking me one day about Umar (RA)'s line, "learn your religion deeply, before leading."
That wasn't a one-off. He was always eager to learn his religion deeply while continuing to build top-notch Muslim products (Tarteel at the time). And now he's leading the space of AI tools for Muslims.
So for sincere, capable builders like Abdellatif, we should reach out with advice and guidance. Connect them with scholars and experts. Correct their mistakes, while defending them against unfair critique.
And if they truly don't listen, find and support alternative teams.
All builders at the cutting edge will make mistakes. Including us at Goldsand, as we build zero-interest financial technology.
But if we tear them down instead of advising them, we risk tearing down any Muslim attempt to own our technology platforms.
The train of technology is not stopping. It's only speeding up. If we don't help shape where it goes, we'll be forced to live with where others take it.
