Europe faced another wave of destructive wildfires on August 14, 2026, with flames reaching homes, forcing mass evacuations and disrupting communities across Croatia, Greece, Germany and France. In the Croatian coastal town of Omis, a fast-moving blaze reached the Borak neighbourhood above the city centre, destroying homes and vehicles and forcing residents to flee by land and sea. More than 150 firefighters battled the fire, while at least 1,000 displaced people were moved into a local sports hall. Northern Greece also saw a major wildfire in Halkidiki, where more than 300 people were evacuated by boat. In western Germany, around 1,800 residents were ordered to leave their homes, while France evacuated 525 villagers in the Landes region. Weeks of extreme heat and drought have left vegetation dangerously dry, fuelling fires across Europe.
