Prescription Drug Prices See Sharpest Annual Drop in More Than 60 Years
Over the 12 months ending in July, prescription drug prices saw their biggest annual drop in more than 60 years, according to inflation data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday.
While consumer prices overall rose 3.4% year over year, the price of medicinal drugs — a category that includes all prescription and over-the-counter medications — fell by 2.7%, reportedly the largest such drop on record. Prescription drug prices fell by even more, down 3.1% compared with July 2025. That’s the largest annual decline since March 1963, The Washington Post reports.
The White House sought to take credit for the news, arguing that President Trump’s push to lower drug prices was working.
“From his Most-Favored-Nations deals to launching TrumpRx, President Trump is delivering real results,” White House spokesman Kush Desai posted on X. “American patients are winning.”
That’s a potentially potent message with the November midterms looming and affordability concerns at the top of voters’ minds. Yet experts reportedly point to a range of factors, including lower prices for popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, more generics and a policy enacted under the Biden administration enabling Medicare to negotiate some prices with drugmakers.
“While the results are stark, teasing out the cause is complicated, independent experts said,” The Post’s Steve Thompson, Federica Cocco and Christopher Rowland noted.
Richard Frank, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a professor emeritus of health economics at Harvard University, told The Post that the Biden-era introduction of Medicare price negotiations, enacted as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, is more likely behind the drop in drug prices.
Negotiated Medicare prices for the first set of 10 popular prescription drugs went into effect on January 1, 2026, and negotiated prices for another group of 15 drugs, including the popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, are set to take effect in 2027.
“If I was a betting guy on what mattered most, it would be probably stuff around the Inflation Reduction Act,” Frank told The Post.

New York City’s pied-à-terre tax can continue its planned rollout while it faces a legal challenge, an appellate judge ruled Thursday.
The ruling comes after Staten Island Judge Wayne Ozzi on Monday issued a temporary restraining order briefly halting the levy on second homes above a certain value. The tax has become a hallmark policy of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani’s government filed a motion to seek an appeal, triggering an automatic stay. Earlier Thursday, NYC asked the appeals court to confirm that auto-pause, arguing Ozzi’s ruling “threatens to derail the City’s time-sensitive implementation of a new surcharge.”
The lawsuit was filed by three city residents challenging the legality of the rollout, not the tax policy itself. Their suit highlights the city’s distribution of a list showing information on thousands of homeowners, and mailed notices informing 17,000 people on that list that they may be subject to the new tax.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has drawn the ire of conservatives and the rich while otherwise remaining widely popular in the city, according to recent polls.
President Donald Trump, a Queens native who once lived in Manhattan’s Trump Tower but moved his primary residence to Florida in 2019, declared in a Truth Social post Tuesday that the surcharge on second homes “must be stopped, NOW!”
“I am looking to see if the Federal Government has any legal right to avert this disaster, before it is too late,” Trump wrote.
It is unclear whether Trump or his immediate family would be subject to the NYC tax. Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday declined to say if the Department of Justice was exploring its legal options against the tax.

WNBA task force discusses transgender athletes amid furor
A WNBA task force of team presidents and general managers met Wednesday and discussed transgender athletes but did not arrive at any eligibility rules, according to a statement sent to ESPN by a league spokesperson.
In recent weeks, demonstrators have staged rallies at Indiana Fever games for and against transgender inclusion after Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said in an ESPN article that she supports barring transgender girls and women from girls' and women's sports.
The league's statement Wednesday, in full, reads:
"Today's meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months. We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others."
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously sent a memo to teams saying a task force of WNBA team presidents and general managers would discuss the issue at the meeting, which was already scheduled.
The WNBA has no publicly available policy governing eligibility of transgender or intersex athletes. The 2026 collective bargaining agreement signed in March states that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." There is no further definition of a woman. On Friday, two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying they identify as women.
No known transgender woman has ever played in the WNBA. Two known nonbinary athletes have played in the league: Layshia Clarendon and AD Durr. Both players' birth sex is female. The WNBA has not responded to requests to clarify its policy and how it applies to transgender women, transgender men and nonbinary players.
Before Indiana's win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday, Fever coach Stephanie White gave an impassioned speech about the commentary and scrutiny directed at her team and the WNBA.
"The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that's trying to hijack our league will not win," she said.
