Early life and education

Jason Atta Kwei Arday was born in Clapham, London, on 9 May 1985 to Ghanaian parents.[1][2][3] He was the third of four brothers and grew up in Clapham.[4] His mother was a mental health nurse and his father a chef.[4]

Arday attended Heathbrook Primary School in Nine Elms, London.[5] At secondary school, Arday earned GCSEs in physical education and textiles before studying for a BTEC course in sport and development at Merton College in Morden, South London.[6][7] According to his memoir, Arday spent many afternoons missing secondary school and playing snooker, becoming so good that he regularly won money playing in tournaments across London. As a student, he wrote that, he made money by entering pro–am nine-ball pool tournaments and frequently reaching the latter stages, winning prize money.[2]

Some statements Arday made about his life were called into question by different media.[8] Arday said that at age three, he was diagnosed with autism, global developmental delay, deafness, and dyscalculia, and was non-verbal until the age of 11. He said he could not read or write until he was 18; and that he was diagnosed with dyslexia in his first year of university.[9][10][11][12][13][2]
