Bright Perseids from Sweden
Known for its bright and fast meteors, the annual Perseid Meteor Shower comes to planet Earth's skies from a radiant in the heroic constellation Perseus. The popular northern summer celestial spectacle is created as grains of dust cast off along the orbit of periodic comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle vaporize in Earth's dense atmosphere, tracing brief, but beautiful streaks through the night. Taken near the shower's peak of activity on August 12, this composite image recorded two bright perseid meteors and one meteor's watery reflection from a location near the coastal village of Grisslehamn, Sweden. Almost as bright as Altair, brightest star on the scene, the meteors appear along with the faint, diffuse background of the Milky Way. This year, the shower's peak activity coincided with a New Moon, so perseid meteor flashes were undiminished by bright moonlight. And for many skywatchers, this night of bright perseid meteors followed their viewing of the silhouette of the New Moon in a much anticipated solar eclipse.

Four days ago , on August 10, 2026, the large M7.4-M7.7 earthquake struck Colombia South America.
During the update on that earthquake, I issued the warning to Indonesia to be on watch for a similar sized earthquake as Colombia (up to M7.7) to strike within 7 days or less.
Now, four days after issuing the warning, the expected M7.7 has struck Indonesia in the exact location which was talked about 4 days before.

Asteroid 2026 PC6 passed Earth at 0.05 LD, marking closest flyby of 2026

Asteroid 2026 PC6 passed Earth at 0.053 lunar distances (0.00014 AU / about 20 400 km / 12 700 miles) from the center of our planet at 00:50 UTC on August 12, 2026, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (NASA/CNEOS).
At the nominal distance, the object passed about 14 000 km (8 700 miles) above Earth’s surface, placing it inside the orbit of geostationary satellites and making it the closest asteroid flyby of the year.
2026 PC6 is one of 101 known asteroids to pass within 1 LD of Earth in 2026, as of 10:29 UTC on August 14. Based on nominal LD distance, it is the closest known asteroid flyby within 1 LD recorded so far this year.
The Minor Planet Center (MPC) noted the initial reported observation by ATLAS-TDO at Teide Observatory in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, at 01:20 UTC on August 11 – about 23 hours and 30 minutes before closest approach.
2026 PC6 is an Aten-class near-Earth asteroid with an estimated diameter of 6.8 to 15 m (22 to 49 feet).
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Small-Body Database reports an orbit with a semimajor axis of 0.749 AU, perihelion of 0.426 AU, aphelion of 1.073 AU, eccentricity of 0.432, and inclination of 19.8 degrees.
MPC reported 101 total observations over the interval from 01:20 UTC to 23:41 UTC on August 11. Its orbit entry used 97 observations, a 1-day arc, orbit type Aten, and an uncertainty value of 5.

NASA Announces MAX POWER: America’s Newest Aerospace Expo, Airshow

In honor of America’s historic 250th anniversary, NASA announced on Friday MAX POWER, a public exposition of American air and space innovation, Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, on and near the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The multi-day, family-friendly event will showcase the next-generation aircraft, spacecraft, autonomous vehicles, and technologies that will help define the future of transportation in air and space, bringing together the public, innovators, investors, pilots, astronauts, engineers, and companies helping open this new frontier.
“This November, we are opening Kennedy Space Center’s historic Shuttle Landing Facility to the public for America’s newest and most exciting aerospace technology expo and airshow, and we are calling it MAX POWER,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
“For 250 years, America has advanced by building what did not exist, flying higher, moving faster, and reaching toward the near-impossible.
There is no better place to celebrate that spirit than at NASA Kennedy, America’s gateway to the stars and the place where so many of our nation’s greatest achievements began.”
By bringing together the legacy of NASA with the companies and technologies shaping what comes next, MAX POWER aims to ignite the spirit of exploration and inspire the next generation of explorers, builders, and dreamers.
In addition to the agency, Air Dot Show, Delaware North, Space Florida, Purpose Entertainment, and UP.Summit are external collaborators.
Some activities will take place at NASA Kennedy, including the Apollo Saturn V facility, and the Launch and Landing Facility currently leased by Space Florida.
Others will take place at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex adjacent to the center leading up to, and during, the festival.

On this day in space! Aug. 15, 1977: Mysterious 'Wow!' Signal boosts search for E.T.

On Aug. 15, 1977, astronomers using Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope detected the famous "Wow!" signal, which to this day is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that we are not alone in the universe.
Astronomer Jerry Ehman was using the telescope to scan a region in the constellation Sagittarius when it detected a weird, 72-second-long radio burst.
The signal was too strong to be explained by background noise, and researchers determined that it was very unlikely that this signal came from anything on Earth.
Despite their best efforts, astronomers have not been able to detect any other signals like it.
Why it mattered
For as long as humans have existed, we have looked up and wondered, "Are we alone?"
This question remains one of the biggest mysteries across not just science but for humanity as a whole.
The "Wow" signal remains an iconic and important finding in the search for life out in the cosmos.
Nearly 50 years since the "Wow!" signal, scientists have made incredible progress in the search for alien life.
We have landed rovers on Mars that have found possible signs of life on the Red Planet, for example, and discovered thousands of exoplanets, or planets outside of our solar system.
The "Wow!" signal was detected nearly two decades before scientists first confirmed the existence of exoplanets.
Today, we have found more than 6,000 of them and are using cutting-edge technologies to explore further and see if any of these far-off planets might contain signs of life.

U.S. Space Force set to launch classified mission Saturday from Vandenberg

SpaceX is targeting Saturday afternoon for a Falcon 9 launch of the USSF-366 mission from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The spontaneous launch window opens 2:52 p.m. to 6:52 p.m., with a backup opportunity available at 2:38 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.
According to reports, this is likely a classified mission for the United States Space Force, comprised of a batch of classified low-Earth orbit satellites being launched on behalf of a U.S. government entity.
Following stage separation, the first stage booster will return and touch town on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean for later retrieval.
There is the possibility that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the launch, depending on weather and other conditions, base officials said.
This will be the 18th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched NROL-126, Transporter-12, SPHEREx, NROL-57, and 13 Starlink missions.

3-orbit spacecraft could help US remove satellites nearing end of life

US spacecraft could safely remove satellites nearing end of life.
Dead satellites drifting around Earth could soon receive a controlled push out of orbit.
Firefly Aerospace has secured a contract from the US Department of War’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Space Development Agency (SDA) to develop a preliminary design for a satellite deorbiting mission.
Announced on August 13, the project will use Firefly’s Elytra orbital vehicle to approach, examine, and remove spacecraft nearing the end of their operational lives.
The effort is intended to reduce the expanding debris population threatening satellites and future missions across multiple Earth orbits.
Elytra will approach and inspect aging satellites
Under the contract, Firefly will complete a preliminary design review, or PDR, covering its proposed mission architecture.
Successfully finishing the review will make the Texas-based company eligible to compete for the mission’s next phase, which could include the launch, spacecraft operation, and deorbiting campaign.
The proposed sequence begins with Elytra launching into low Earth orbit. The spacecraft would then maneuver toward the designated client object, conduct rendezvous and proximity operations, survey its condition, and perform the deorbiting service.
“Firefly is known for performing some of the hardest missions in space, and this mission is no exception,” said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace.
“In alignment with the White House order to prioritize orbital debris mitigation, our team designed a highly efficient, cost-effective solution for our Elytra vehicles to deorbit satellites nearing end of life,” he added.
One system designed for three orbital regions
Firefly says its proprietary deorbit system can support operations in low Earth orbit, medium Earth orbit, and geostationary Earth orbit.
This flexibility could allow Elytra to work with satellites operating at vastly different altitudes and built with varying sizes and configurations.
Elytra combines high-thrust maneuverability with substantial fuel reserves and payload capacity.
Those capabilities are important for missions requiring the spacecraft to alter its trajectory, reach another object, match its movement, and operate near it safely before beginning the disposal procedure.
The orbital vehicle incorporates flight-proven technology from Firefly’s existing launch vehicles and lunar landers.
Its avionics, composite structures, and propulsion architecture draw partly from systems used by Blue Ghost, the company’s lunar lander that successfully reached the Moon.
Firefly is separately preparing Elytra for a space domain awareness mission under another DIU contract. That flight is scheduled no earlier than 2027, and its core structures have been completed as the vehicle enters integration and testing.
Up to 25 launches planned through 2031
Beyond satellite servicing, Firefly is expanding its dedicated launch business. The company recently extended its multi-launch agreement with Lockheed Martin by two years, potentially covering up to 25 Alpha rocket launches through 2031.
Those missions will use the upgraded Alpha Block II configuration, designed to serve payloads in the 1,000-kilogram class while improving reliability and production rates.
The rocket is also being developed for deployable launch operations supporting responsive national security missions, hypersonic tests, and commercial satellite deployments.
Together, the programs position Firefly to handle both ends of a satellite’s life: delivering spacecraft to their chosen orbits and eventually helping remove them after their missions conclude.

The 15-minute launch window opens at 9:12 p.m. ET. If needed, a backup opportunity is available Sunday, August 16 during a 15-minute launch window that opens at 8:54 p.m. ET.

Ukrainian missiles attack Russian region – governor

An industrial facility in Russia’s Samara Region was attacked by Ukrainian missiles, local governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said.
Emergency services have been deployed on site, Fedorishchev wrote in a Saturday morning post on Max.

The Russian military also struck 15 oceangoing vessels operating in the interests of the Ukrainian military, including a tanker, seven dry cargo ships, two tugboats, and five patrol boats, it added.
