The Roman problem with the Jewish polity was that unlike other client kingdoms, it refused to honor the emperor as divine.
So it had to be crushed.
Otherwise the Roman empire was pretty live and let live.
All kinds of cults thrived, so it seems that Jews would have little problem making a go of it, so long as they didn't feel inclined to take on the imperial regime.
