Trump Endorses Mass Amnesty Cheerleader Who Routinely Undermines Him

President Donald Trump doubled down on his endorsement of Republican Florida Rep. Maria Salazar ahead of Tuesday’s primary, despite Salazar being a proponent of legislation labeled a gateway to mass amnesty by its critics.

Trump’s endorsement of the former news anchor and political reporter began with the president saying that Salazar had been “doing a truly fantastic job” representing her district.

“In Congress, María is working hard to Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Support our Brave Military/Veterans, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” Trump continued.

While Salazar also endorsed Trump’s 2024 election campaign, she has been vocal about her policy disagreements with Trump, especially over their opposing views on immigration.

Salazar had also sponsored the DIGNIDAD Act, or “dignity” in Spanish, which would secure the border to end illegal immigration, make the asylum process more efficient while minimizing the catch-and-release practice, create a legal path for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to obtain citizenship, and allow legal immigration for hiring shortages in key American industries.

Republican challengers to the act, including Texas Rep. Brandon Gill, referred to the act in April as a “terrible betrayal of our voters.”

“It’s rank amnesty, and everybody knows it,” he added, saying that it would grant legal status to over 10 million illegal aliens. “I want dignity for Americans — the people whose interests we represent - not illegal aliens.”

Salazar pushed back, claiming that Gill hadn’t read the act and characterized real amnesty as “millions in the shadows, no control, no accountability, and a system that stopped working a long time ago.”

While Trump has held a soft spot for companies using illegal immigrants in jobs that are “almost impossible to replace,” he has not proposed a mass nationalization process and has cut amnesty.

Salazar was also one of the few Republicans who voted with Democrats to create a committee to investigate Jan. 6. Ultimately, the bill went through several iterations before the creation of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Trump and his supporters criticized the House committee as a blatant attempt at political weaponization.

Still, Trump announced an endorsement of Salazar in February, then reiterated it in a recent Truth Social post, stating that “Salazar has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election,” while attaching a link to where voters can find their polling place.

Witkoff, Trump Family Crypto Firm Backs AI Venture Tied To Restricted Chinese Companies

World Liberty Financial, the crypto industry company co-founded by Alex and Zach Witkoff — sons of billionaire Trump advisor Steve Witkoff — along with Trump family members, is reportedly backing a Hong Kong artificial intelligence (AI) venture tied to Chinese companies restricted by the United States government.

According to a Reuters report, the firm has entered into a partnership with WorldClaw — a relatively new Hong Kong-based company that gives subscribers access to a range of AI models developed by companies worldwide. However, a Reuters investigation found that around half of the AI models offered by WorldClaw are owned by, or originate from, mainland Chinese companies that the U.S. government has restricted from doing business in the United States over national security concerns.

These companies, according to the Reuters report, include Alibaba, Baidu, and Z.ai, alongside several others.

While the partnership between the children of the U.S. president and those of one of his closest advisors with Chinese AI companies is concerning enough, the Daily Caller previously reported that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted World Liberty Financial a conditional de novo national trust banking charter. The charter allows World Liberty Financial to establish a domestic U.S. national trust bank.

Importantly, the OCC is a regulatory agency operating under the auspices of the U.S. Treasury Department.

Still, the de novo charter process will require World Liberty Financial to undergo extensive layers of regulatory scrutiny — at least in practice. However, the fact that the children of a sitting president and those of a powerful White House advisor have been granted a banking charter that lacks any sort of recent precedent.

The additional prospect of a relationship between World Liberty Financial and Chinese companies deemed by the U.S. federal government to have ties to the Chinese military is even more concerning.

The Treasury Department and the OCC did not respond to multiple requests for comment from the Daily Caller.

U.S. Attorney’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service Announce More than 600 Arrests in Northern Ohio Violent Crime Crackdown

CLEVELAND – Hundreds of individuals were apprehended and taken into custody throughout northern Ohio as part of a multi-agency strategic initiative to combat violent crime. The multi-jurisdictional sweep across eight cities, known as Operation Northern Shield, was coordinated among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and task forces.

In May, June, and July, more than 600 people were arrested and nearly 200 firearms were seized along with varying amounts of fentanyl, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, cocaine, illicit drugs, and U.S. currency. Approximately 264 of these arrests came from surges into individual cities, and an additional 355 arrests were from other areas across the District.

“Operation Northern Shield was a different strategy than what was done before. We’ve never targeted multiple cities simultaneously. But we knew that, historically, rising temps in the summer months tend to correlate with rising crime and we needed to act swiftly across our region, not just in one area,” said U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer for the Northern District of Ohio. “We were determined to shield our communities with the highest crime areas. We especially would like to thank the U.S. Marshals Service for taking the lead in this effort to align state and local agencies and resources to take down some of the most wanted criminals in our District while continuing to perform their regular work to hunt down fugitives.”

“Operation Northern Shield succeeded because agencies did not work in silos, they worked as one team. This is what successful multi-agency operations look like. Different patches, uniforms, and chains of command, one mission making northern Ohio safer,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott. “For 23 years our USMS (NOVFTF) was built on and sustained through our partnerships. My special thanks to all the federal, state and local officers, assistant U.S. attorneys, and crime analysts who put in the long hours to make this operation a complete success, ensuring the safety of our communities.”

Plans for Operation Northern Shield began in early 2026, with the goal to partner with local law enforcement agencies in a cohesive and integrated effort to target and apprehend violent fugitives in eight northern Ohio cities including Akron, Cleveland, Lorain, Youngstown, Elyria, Canton, Mansfield, and Toledo.

Fugitives were wanted for crimes of violence such as homicide, manslaughter, assault, robbery, and sex offenses. Other offenses involved human trafficking, firearms, and illegal drugs.

Overall, Operation Northern Shield yielded the following totals from May 17-July 18:

619 arrested

684 warrants cleared

29 (suspected) gang members arrested

1.317 kg of narcotics seized (methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy, and fentanyl)

6 pounds of marijuana seized

$120,200 in U.S. Currency seized

198 firearms, 2 suppressors, 2 machine gun conversion devices, 1 inert grenade, 2 sets of ballistic body armor seized

Former Senior NIAID Official Pleads Guilty to Charges Connected to Concealing Federal Records During COVID-19 Pandemic

Greenbelt, Maryland – A former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) employee pled guilty in federal court, today, to a conspiracy charge stemming from a scheme to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and the Federal Records Act in connection with communications about coronavirus research grants.

David M. Morens, 78, of Chester, Maryland, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States. Morens served as a senior advisor in NIAID’s Office of the Director from 2006 through 2022.

Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, announced the guilty plea with Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul, FBI Baltimore Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge Marcus L. Sykes, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG).

According to his guilty plea, Morens, Co-Conspirator 1, Co-Conspirator 2, and others conspired during the COVID-19 pandemic to defraud the United States after NIH terminated Co-Conspirator 1’s grant. NIH terminated the grant, Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence, based on allegations that COVID-19 emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China. NIAID awarded the grant to Company 1 and Co-Conspirator 1, who made a subaward to the WIV.

Following the termination, Morens and Co-Conspirator 2 pledged to help Co-Conspirator 1 restore the termination of the bat coronavirus grant and counter the narrative that COVID-19 leaked from a lab. In anticipation that their communications would be requested through FOIA Requests, Morens, Co-Conspirator 1, and Co-Conspirator 2 agreed in writing to intentionally hide their communications from public view by corresponding using Morens’s personal Gmail account, rather than his official NIH email account.

The co-conspirators used Morens’s personal Gmail account to exchange non-public NIH information; correspond about their efforts to influence NIH to fund Company 1; exchange edits to drafts of letters addressed to NIH leadership for Company 1 and Co-Conspirator 1; and “back-channel” information to Senior NIAID Official 1. According to court documents, each of these matters fell within Morens’s role as senior advisor and constituted federal records that needed to be created, maintained, and exchanged on government systems.

Additionally, as admitted to in his guilty plea, Morens and Co-Conspirator 1 conspired to pay illegal gratuities. Co-Conspirator 1 gifted Morens wine for his “behind-the-scenes shenanigans,” and arranged for its delivery to Morens’s Maryland residence. Morens then allegedly identified an official act that he could perform to “deserve” the gift, which was to author a scientific commentary in a prominent medical journal advocating that COVID-19 had natural origins. Co-Conspirator 1 suggested he would provide Morens with additional things of value, including meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C.

Morens is facing up to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district judge determines sentencing after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Former U.S. Marine from Massachusetts Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

BOSTON – A former U.S. Marine from Everett, Mass. has been arrested and charged for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Carlos Fernando Alvarenga Portillo, 29, was charged by criminal complaint with possession of child pornography. Portillo was arrested on Aug. 5, 2026 and was later released on conditions following a detention hearing.

According to the charging documents, Portillo was identified as an individual who had – as early as January 2022 – knowingly possessed files online that depicted CSAM. A forensic examination of a Samsung Galaxy device seized from Portillo’s residence on July 15, 2026 allegedly revealed over 200 media files that depicted CSAM, including the abuse of victims between approximately four and 11 years old.

The charge of possession of child pornography provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Jeff Grimming, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the Everett Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aidan Lang of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
