Portugal Wildfires Rage Across 3 Regions | 2,000 Firefighters & 20 Aircraft Fight Flames | VERTEX
Portugal is battling a major wildfire crisis as flames rage across three regions, forcing firefighters to confront multiple active fronts amid extreme heat and dry conditions. More than 2,000 firefighters and emergency personnel, supported by around 20 aircraft, have been deployed to contain the fires across northern Portugal.
The most serious blaze in Torre de Moncorvo has already burned more than 2,000 hectares, while fires in Arouca and Santo Tirso have also spread across large areas. In Arouca, firefighters faced four active fronts, while the Santo Tirso blaze had consumed more than 900 hectares.
With temperatures expected to exceed 40°C(104°F) in several parts of Portugal and humidity remaining low, authorities have warned of a very high to maximum risk of rural fires.
The escalating fires add to a wider European wildfire crisis, with Spain, Greece, France and other countries also battling devastating summer blazes.
