muzzies have 72 sects with different beliefs. probably where the 72 virgins myth comes from..

-—-

Shia Muslims are the sect that practices ritual self-flagellation, particularly during the month of Muharram and on the day of Ashura.

The practice is known as matam (in Iran and South Asia) or latm (in the Arab world) and involves beating chests, whipping with chains, or cutting with blades to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala.

Sunni Islam strictly forbids self-flagellation, viewing it as a form of self-harm and pagan innovation that has no basis in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad or his companions.

While the vast majority of Shia Muslims engage in non-violent mourning like chest-beating, a minority perform extreme forms of flagellation such as tatbir, which some Shia clergy have declared forbidden (haram) due to the harm it causes.
