Biden Adviser Warned Fauci, CDC Director Cloth Masks Didn't Work Well: Text

A doctor who advised President Joe Biden on COVID-19 warned Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top Biden administration officials in a newly disclosed text message that wearing cloth masks provided “very limited protection.”

Dr. Michael Osterholm, who was part of Biden’s COVID-19 transition advisory team, told Fauci and other officials, including the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the time, in August 2021, that the government needed to encourage the wearing of N-95 masks, rather than masking in general.

“Note the very limited protection from face cloth coverings,” Osterholm said in the text. He said that he supported masking, “but we must be promoting the use of N-95s, even if not fit tested.”

The CDC recommended masking in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic started, prompting mask mandates in schools and other places. The agency promoted cloth masks, in addition to better quality face coverings, citing research it published in its quasi-journal.

Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, leading up to the 2021 text said publicly that cloth masks provided limited benefits and that he favored N-95s.

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis threatened to withhold funds from schools that forced masking on children, a reporter during a White House press briefing on Aug. 6, 2021, referenced Osterholm’s comments.

Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary at the time, noted that Osterholm was no longer a government adviser. She said the Biden administration was relying on medical experts in the federal government for masking. The issue with DeSantis, she added, was that the governor was “preventing schools and teachers and others from protecting themselves and the students in their classroom.”

Osterholm reacted by composing a message to Fauci, then-CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, and several others.

“I’m sending this via text messaging to avoid any FOIA issues,” he wrote on Aug. 8, 2021, referring to the Freedom of Information Act.

A former Fauci adviser just pleaded guilty to the federal crime of defrauding the government by destroying and conspiring to destroy federal records subject to the act, which lets people request government records.

A new poll shows widespread opposition among American voters to a congressional proposal that would increase U.S.-Israel military cooperation and integrate Israeli defense companies into the Pentagon.

According to a poll conducted by Data for Progress, a left-leaning think-tank, 61 percent of likely U.S. voters oppose Section 219, the provision in the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would deepen U.S.-Israel military cooperation and integrate Israeli weapons companies into the Pentagon. This includes 78 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Independents. When not provided surrounding context regarding the NDAA, 62 percent of Republicans oppose granting special access to any foreign military. The poll also revealed that 57 percent of Americans oppose increased Pentagon access for Israeli defense companies. Furthermore, 51 percent of respondents believed that Israel benefits more from the U.S.-Israel relationship. In contrast, only 12 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. benefits more from the relationship. Specifically, Section 219 would establish a U.S.-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative to carry out joint research and assist in the development of missile defense, artificial intelligence (AI), counter-drone systems, and other areas. The survey polled 1,217 likely U.S. voters between August 3 and August 7.

“This poll is a flashing red warning sign for any member of Congress who supports the defense authorization bill… A clear majority of voters do not support further integrating the Israeli military and Israeli military companies into the Pentagon, which the NDAA is set to do,” said Cavan Kharrazian, Senior Policy Adviser at Demand Progress.

Tennessee pastor sentenced to life in prison for raping girl, 5, with help from wife

A Tennessee pastor who spent years traveling the country for his ministry will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a jury convicted him of raping a child, while his wife was found guilty of facilitating the abuse, authorities said.

Benjamin Garlick, 35, was found guilty Monday of seven counts of aggravated rape of a child, six counts of aggravated sexual battery, one count of solicitation of sexual exploitation of a minor and two violations of Tennessee’s Child Protection Act after a two-week trial in Rutherford County.

Circuit Court Judge Barry Tidwell sentenced Garlick to life in prison without the possibility of parole on the aggravated rape convictions, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department. He still faces sentencing on the remaining convictions on Nov. 10.

Garlick’s wife, 32-year-old Shaantal Garlick, was convicted of two counts of facilitation of aggravated rape of a child and two counts of aggravated child neglect.

She is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 10.

The case began in August 2023, when the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Special Victims Unit launched an investigation into the sexual abuse of a child who was just 5 years old at the time.

Police said the abuse had occurred over several years.

How Mossad stole the world’s most advanced fighter jet

After nearly three years of planning, Mossad recruited Iraqi pilot Munir Redfa to fly a MiG-21 to Israel in 1966, pulling off one of the boldest intelligence operations in Israeli history

On the morning of August 16, 1966, at exactly 8 a.m., a foreign fighter jet landed at the Israeli Air Force base in Hatzor. This was no friendly aircraft on a routine visit. The Iraqi Air Force insignia was displayed on its wings and a 30-year-old pilot sat in the cockpit, having voluntarily landed in enemy territory. Within minutes, the significance of the event became clear: Israel had obtained a MiG-21, the Soviet Union’s classified and most advanced fighter jet of the time, a weapon that Western governments were desperate to get their hands on.

A plane no one knew

The story began not in Baghdad but in Moscow. In the second half of 1962, Israel received troubling information: the Soviet Union had begun supplying neighboring Arab countries with MiG-21s, a new generation of fast and sophisticated interceptor aircraft whose true capabilities were unknown to the Israeli Air Force and to any of its allies, including NATO countries.

The commander of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Ezer Weizman, understood the scale of the threat. In April 1965, he met with Mossad chief Meir Amit and explained that the Air Force needed to know everything about the MiG-21s in Arab hands. He made an seemingly impossible request: obtain a MiG-21 for the Air Force so it could study the aircraft in depth.

The pilot whose religion held him back

Although on paper the mission seemed imaginary and impossible, the Mossad took up the challenge. The solution did not come through technological espionage or breaking into a military base but from something far more human: frustration.

Since the 1950s, the Mossad had maintained a Jewish agent living in Iraq who had close ties to government and military circles. Through him, it managed to identify Munir Redfa, an air force commander in Mosul in northern Iraq — a talented and respected pilot whose rise through the ranks had stalled when he reached the rank of captain.

The reason was not professional. Redfa was a Christian, a religious minority in Iraq, and was blocked from promotion despite his abilities.

That frustration, combined with his desire to immigrate to the West, made him the ideal candidate. Mossad operatives established contact with him with great caution. Some of the preparations for the operation took place far from the Middle East — at a cafe in Rome in January 1966. During a meeting between Mossad agents, Redfa and an Air Force officer seconded to the Mossad for the mission, the final details of one of the boldest espionage operations in Israeli history were agreed over an Italian coffee.

At one point, Redfa was even brought to Israel secretly for 24 hours. There, he met with the head of the Air Force Intelligence Branch to prepare for the most complicated stage: accurately identifying the Israeli airfield where he was to land safely without making a mistake and, God forbid, landing at an enemy base.

One of the operational challenges facing the Mossad was finding a way to tell Redfa that everything was ready and that he could go ahead with the plan. Sending a direct message to someone in the heart of Iraq was considered too risky. The solution was an open radio broadcast.

The song “Marhabtayn Marhabtayn” was chosen as the means of communication. Its broadcast on the Arabic-language service of Israel Radio was the agreed signal. When Redfa heard the song playing, he knew the moment had arrived.

The escape: Precise navigation and nerves of steel

On August 16, 1966, Munir Redfa boarded his aircraft and took off from his base — but not for his usual mission. He headed west, covering nearly 2,000 kilometers through the air on a route that required precise navigation and nerves of steel.

Australia, UK and Canada slam Israel ending probe into aid worker killings

Australia, the UK and Canada have condemned as "shameful" Israel's decision to close an investigation into the death of seven aid workers killed in Gaza in 2024.

The World Central Kitchen employees — Australian Zomi Frankcom, three Britons, a dual US-Canadian national, a Pole and a Palestinian — died in a drone strike on their vehicle convoy after overseeing the unloading of a food aid shipment.

Israel's military called the incident a "tragic mistake".

"In the more than two years since, we have been pressing for Israel to swiftly and thoroughly consider the case and hold those responsible to account," the three nations said in a joint statement.

"The announcement by the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] on 19 August 2026 that it would not pursue criminal investigations into this strike, without further explanation, is shameful," it said.

The incident in April 2024 sparked global outrage and renewed calls to ensure the safety of aid workers in Gaza.

"Announcing this decision on World Humanitarian Day, while the world honoured the courage and sacrifice of humanitarians, was particularly egregious," the joint statement added.

The Israeli military acknowledged a series of errors at various levels of command, but a preliminary investigation concluded on Wednesday that there was no "reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct".

"Israel extends its condolences to the families of the seven World Central Kitchen aid workers … who tragically lost their lives under deeply regrettable circumstances," Israel's foreign ministry posted on X on Friday.

'Deeply offensive'

Israel's foreign ministry said the decision not to launch a criminal probe "was made by Israel's independent military prosecution authorities on the basis of strict professional and legal considerations".

"We remain committed to the safety of humanitarian personnel, compliance with international humanitarian law and preventing such tragedies from recurring," it added.
