Regarding the loss of life, it's my understanding (though I could be misinformed), the 'contact' was highly trusted, and as a result, was allowed close contact and basically greeted by the group/security without being searched. Didn't want to offend. If I recall, this incident is portrayed in ZDT, but have read the script was heavily influenced.
