Trimbos Red Alert: Very dangerous XTC with PMMA found

Last week, several ecstasy pills were handed in to one of the test centers of the Drugs Information and Monitoring System (DIMS) that turned out to contain a very high amount of the substancePMMA. The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has also recently analyzed such a pill. Use of this pill can lead to overheating with a potentially fatal outcome.

It is a pill with two different colors (various combinations have been found) with a Trump image on the front and a fracture line on the back with the text 'NL' at the top and 'Trump' at the bottom. Since May, the DIMS has been advising against the use of pills containing a lower amount ofPMMAin addition to MDMA via the Red Alert app.

What is the danger of PMMA?

PMMA (para-methoxymethamphetamine)is a substance that is very similar to MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy. The effect only occurs later and the stimulating effect often does not occur. This increases the risk of overdose. Hours after thePMMAhas been taken, various effects can suddenly occur such as nausea, increased heart rate, convulsions and an extremely elevated body temperature.

Advice to users and environment

Do not use this pill at all. If someone has taken this pill anyway and experiences severe effects as a result, quickly call the medical services (first aid or ambulance) and try to calm the person in question down as much as possible in the meantime.

What is the DIMS?

The DIMS office is housed at the Trimbos Institute. The DIMS collects information through a national network of twelve participants with 34 test locations in the Netherlands, mostly institutions for addiction care. People can have their drugs tested for content there. In this way, the DIMS has a good idea of the new products that are used in the Netherlands.
