Six new asteroids named after Polish researchers

Six Polish scientists and an Argentine planetary researcher working in Poland have been honoured with asteroids named after them, in recognition of their work in astronomy, planetary science and geology.

The names were announced in July in issues of the WGSBN Bulletin, published by the International Astronomical Union’s Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature, which is responsible for naming minor planets.

The Polish scientists honoured are planetary geologist Anna Łosiak and astronomers Emil Wilawer, Karolina Jadwiga Dziadura, Krzysztof Langner, Monika Kamińska and Roman Hirsch. Argentine planetary scientist Milagros Rita Colazo, who is currently working at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, was also recognised.

 

The asteroid (20160) Annałosiak, previously designated 1996 TH42, was named after Anna Łosiak, a planetary geologist at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Born in 1982, Łosiak studies meteorite craters on Earth and other celestial bodies. She has also become involved in efforts to establish the Impact Morasko Science Centre near the Morasko meteorite craters in Poznań.

The asteroid was discovered on October 8, 1996, at the La Silla Observatory in Chile by Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst (1936-2022), who discovered several thousand asteroids.

(20322) Emilwilawer, formerly known as 1998 HZ20, honours Polish astronomer Emil Wilawer, born in 1993.

 

Wilawer studies the physical properties of asteroids, specialising in determining their phase curves from dense light curves and data collected by surveys such as Gaia.

The asteroid was discovered on April 20, 1998, near Socorro in the United States as part of the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) programme.

 

(20446) Karolinadziadura, previously designated 1999 JB80, was named after Karolina Jadwiga Dziadura, a Polish astronomer who received her doctorate in planetary astronomy from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 2024.

Her research focuses on the Yarkovsky effect — a phenomenon in which the absorption and re-emission of heat by a rotating asteroid can alter its orbital motion.

She also studies asteroid densities and uses stellar occultations and photometric data to determine their sizes, rotation and shapes.

The asteroid was discovered on May 14, 1999, by the LINEAR programme.

 

Another Polish astronomer honoured was Krzysztof Langner, born in 1989. The asteroid (20459) Krzysztoflangner has been known since September 9, 1999, when it was discovered by the LINEAR project.

Langner studies asteroid dynamics, including the double asteroid Didymos-Dimorphos as part of NASA’s DART mission and the European Space Agency’s Hera mission.

The asteroid (20551) Monikakamińska, formerly known as 1999 RE112, was named after Monika Kamińska, a Polish astronomer at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

Kamińska has observed asteroids for many years and is currently primarily responsible for observations made with the Roman Baranowski Telescope, also known as the Poznań Spectroscopic Telescope 2, at Winer Observatory in Arizona.

The asteroid was discovered by LINEAR on September 9, 1999.

 

The sixth Polish scientist honoured was Roman Hirsch, an astronomer at Adam Mickiewicz University who has participated in asteroid observations at the Borówiec Observatory for years.

He also takes part in observations made with the Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma. The asteroid (20636) Romanhirsch now bears his name.

 

The seventh researcher honoured was Milagros Rita Colazo, an Argentine planetary scientist affiliated with Adam Mickiewicz University and its Institute of Astronomical Observatory.

Colazo completed her PhD at the National University of Córdoba in 2023 and is now a postdoctoral researcher in Poznań. Her research focuses on asteroid phase curves — graphs showing how an asteroid’s brightness changes depending on its phase angle — as well as photometry and large-scale sky surveys such as the upcoming LSST.

 

The asteroid (20280) Colazo, formerly designated 1998 FQ49, was discovered on March 30, 1998, as part of the LINEAR programme.

The latest names recognise researchers working across several areas of planetary science, from asteroid properties and orbital dynamics to meteorite craters and long-term astronomical observations. (PAP)

Four astronauts will receive the United States' highest space honor today (Aug. 28), and you can watch it live.

 

President Donald Trump will give the astronauts of NASA's Artemis II moon mission the Congressional Space Medal of Honor today, during a ceremony at Johnson Space Center in Houston that starts at 11:00 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT).

 

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will also participate in the event. You can watch it live here at Space.com, courtesy of NASA.

 

Artemis II launched on April 1 and came back to Earth nine days later. It was the first crewed mission of NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term base near the moon's south pole in the coming years.

 

The flight sent four people — NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen — on a looping journey around the lunar far side.

 

It was the first crewed trip beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, and its astronauts got farther from their home planet than any people ever had before.

 

Artemis II engaged folks around the world thanks to its importance, its historic nature and the charisma of its astronauts.

 

And some fortuitous orbital dynamics didn't hurt, either: The Artemis II crew were lucky enough to observe a total solar eclipse from beyond the moon, something human eyes had never seen firsthand before.

 

The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is awarded "to any astronaut who in the performance of his duties has distinguished himself by exceptionalIy meritorious efforts and contributions to the welfare of the Nation and of mankind," NASA wrote in a description of the award, citing Congress' stated criteria.

 

Though the president gives out the medal, he does so on the recommendation of the NASA administrator, the agency added. Just 30 people have received the award to date, and most of them are pretty big names.

 

Honorees include Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong; Alan Shepard and John Glenn, who were the first Americans to reach space and orbit Earth, respectively; Gemini astronaut Ed White, the first American to perform a spacewalk; and Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell.

 

The award was also given to each of the 14 astronauts who died in the space shuttle Challenger and Columbia disasters.

 

Hansen therefore won't be the first non-American to receive the medal. Ilan Ramon, one of the seven people who perished when Columbia broke apart upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere on Feb. 1, 2003, was from Israel.

NASA, Northrop Grumman Complete Cygnus XL Space Station Reboost

Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL spacecraft today fired its thrusters for 20 mins, 43 seconds boosting the International Space Station’s orbit.

 

The Cygnus XL’s gimbaled delta velocity engine was used to adjust the space station’s altitude by 2/10-of-a-mile at apogee, or highest point of station’s orbit, and 2.6 miles at perigee, or lowest point of station’s orbit, placing the station in an orbit of 266.5 x 254.9 miles.

 

The Cygnus XL spacecraft, which is supporting NASA’s Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Services 24 mission, arrived at the orbital complex on April 13, delivering more than 11,000 pounds of science and supplies to the space station.

 

Cygnus will remain berthed to space station until October when it will be filled with disposal cargo, unberthed from station, and then harmlessly burn up during its destructive reentry into Earth’s atmosphere.

 

This reboost sets up the phasing for Progress 96 launch in early September.

The mission is named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, Dr. Nancy Grace Roman.

Roman is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman (1925–2018), NASA’s first chief of astronomy. She championed space-based observatories that could study the universe above Earth’s hazy atmosphere while making their data broadly available to the scientific community.

While she’s known as the “mother” of the Hubble Space Telescope, Roman played an even broader role as the driving force behind NASA’s entire Great Observatories program, which included Hubble along with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the retired Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope.

Her vision and leadership helped establish NASA as a world-class scientific institution and laid the foundation for generations of space telescopes that continue to expand humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.

Roman will transform our view of the cosmos by showing us the bigger picture.

Roman will pair a large field of view with crisp infrared vision to scan vast, deep swaths of sky. This flagship mission is designed to help astronomers explore dark matter, dark energy, and planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets.

Since each of Roman’s surveys will sample such a large volume of the cosmos, the mission will also offer practically limitless opportunities for astronomers to conduct a broad range of additional science.

From objects in our outer solar system and exploding stars to growing black holes and galaxies by the billions, very little will be beyond Roman’s reach. Roman’s data will be made public as soon as it’s processed, allowing many teams to analyze it simultaneously.

The observatory will journey a million miles to join Webb at Lagrange point 2.

Roman will orbit 1 million miles away at the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), the same location as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

At L2, gravity from the Sun and Earth works together with an object’s motion around the Sun to hold it roughly in place. This balance will give Roman a relatively steady orbit without using much fuel.

Like Webb, Roman will trace out a large orbit around the actual L2 point — much larger than the Moon’s orbit around Earth — and the two will easily be kept far apart.

The spacecraft carries the names of more than a million people.

This summer, everyone was invited to submit their name to be added to a memory card attached to a plaque on the Roman spacecraft. More than 1.3 million people did so and will have their names carried all the way to L2.

Roman will scan the skies for at least five years.

Roman will have a primary mission lifetime of five years and is designed to support an additional five-year extended mission.

Fuel is expected to be the mission’s life-limiting resource, and while NASA does not currently have an ability to service observatories at L2, Roman is designed to be refuelable.
