After being hit by the truck, Officer Wells' body was hard ro locate. As the passerby, retired combat medic Joel Crawford, who pulled over and got out to help put it:
"“We’re going through the trees. They’re yelling his name. He was literally a hundred feet from his bike knocked through a bunch of trees in a creek. The officers and I we tear his clothes off,” Crawford said. “I thought he was dead honestly He wasn’t breathing. It was kind of a snorting sound.”
That loud, audible noise can be heard in the video. It is overwhelming, and News 4 is muting it—the sound of a man dying. Sgt. Wells is literally fighting, gasping for life.
“I helped the other officer open his airway up more, and I held it open,” Crawford said. “I honestly thought he was going to die. His eyes, there was like nothing there. They were kind of gone.”

After surviving against all odds, Officer Wells is STILL fighting with Workmans' Comp and his lawsuit proceeds, if any, against the now incarcerated driver who tried to kill him, will likely be entirely "clawed back" by the insurance carriers who have paid out for his many life-supporting and life-saving surgeries and other treatments. He is married to a fellow officer and they have 3 children.
Tunnel to Towers has selected him and his family as a recipient of a custom-built house (still in process) since his leg amputation, pain, nerve damage, and balance issues are difficult and painful for the former competitive body builder.
Thank God for Tunnel to Towers - which is itself crown sourced - but what a disappointment the 3-year GoFundMe campaign set up by his brother has been for this public servant, Joe Wells, gravely injuried in the line of duty with devastated life-long changes to his physical being, pain levels, nerve damage, and physical abilities.
And what twisted contrast of the crowd-sourced support in a 2 week GoFundMe campaign for Lindsay Clancy's parents, both retired, whose nurse daughter killed her own 3 children (so they, unfortunately, no longer need financial support - unlike Joe Wells' 3 children whose father is out of work due to service-connected injuries but without the financial and medical-for-life support that Active Duty members receive in simillar circumstances).

In a separate attempt to raise $25,000 (only $10,000 so far) for a mobility scooter, his brother, also a police officer, explains:
"On September 23, 2022, Joe was severely injured in the line of duty. He spent 15 days on maximum life support, and at one point, doctors even urged his wife, Cheridan, to consider comfort care. But Joe fought with everything he had.
"Since then, he’s endured more than 20 surgeries, including a failed knee replacement that ultimately led to a leg amputation. He now has a prosthetic leg, but due to debilitating nerve damage throughout the lower half of his body, he can barely use it. He lives with constant, excruciating pain—and no clear end in sight."
