Always wanted to give it a go myself but by the time that notion hit I was past my prime and very much aware of the high and never ending work load. Hell, just the effort to keep your home/structures protected from fire is a full time job. Perhaps if I had started at 18 when I had the energy required it might have worked but 40 is too late to get that game going. Hats off to those that make it!

I believe living debt free is the biggest contributor to living a secure life. It's astounding how the money piles up when you have no debt. It's the number one reason wife anon and I are retiring early.
I still want to work so I need to find something to do. Busy right now getting my own house done right to carry me to my death. New siding. roof, paint, concrete, minimal landscaping and some work inside to make it more amenable to the needs of 'old folks' as we become 'old folks'. Wife wants to do some traveling so helping others homestead in trade for meat and other foods might be ideal for an intermittent schedule.
Might be time to liquidate the german ghettos again.
