Woman dies after jumping from Downtown LA building near 12th and Grand

A woman died Saturday morning after jumping from the roof of a seven-story building at the intersection of West 12th Street and South Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, according to eyewitness reports and emergency alerts.
Local resident Stella X (@Stellaaa) posted an update from the scene: "She reportedly landed in front of the coffee shop, Awesome Coffee, at 12th & Grand." The shop is located at 1200 South Grand Avenue.
Los Angeles Fire Department and Police Department units responded in force. Multiple fire trucks, police vehicles, and caution tape filled the intersection. Streets were closed and pedestrian traffic was restricted while crews investigated. The Citizen safety app reported police managing an incident involving a person on a roof before shifting to a full investigation. Updates were later limited due to the sensitive nature of the event.
The woman's identity has not been publicly released. No official statements from LAPD or LAFD confirming additional details were available as of Saturday evening.
Suicides occur in Downtown Los Angeles at rates broadly in line with the rest of Los Angeles County for the general population, but they are far more common among the large unhoused population concentrated in Skid Row and nearby areas.

The picture changes when looking at people experiencing homelessness. County reports show the suicide rate among this group is 8–13 times higher than the overall county population. In 2024 there were 80 such deaths countywide (a 21% increase from the prior year), making suicide the fifth-leading cause of death for unhoused residents. Skid Row and central Downtown contain one of the highest concentrations of unsheltered people in the city, which makes individual incidents more visible even if they represent a small share of total county suicides.
Historically, certain older hotels in the area gained a reputation for multiple deaths over decades, but modern data does not treat Downtown as an extreme outlier once population and homelessness are taken into account.

Since yesterday evening and throughout the day today, I have been receiving reports on the situation in the Kyiv region – in the village of Myla, Bucha district – where detonation began following a Russian strike. A terrible situation and terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosives right next to people.
Another such crime – after what happened in Vyshneve – is absolutely unacceptable. I expect the details to be presented to the public promptly. The first strike was on an ammunition storage site that definitely shouldn’t have been there – a Defense Forces storage facility. Shells, mines, other ammunition, and drones detonated. The scale is significant.
We have already spoken with the Prosecutor General, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Commander-in-Chief – they have everything necessary for the investigation.
I want to separately thank everyone who is there on the ground and at other sites of Russian strikes, doing everything possible to help and save people.
