EXCLUSIVE: ‘Delete From The Deleted File’: Fauci Tried To Destroy Gain-Of-Function Research Email, New Docs Reveal

Emily Kopp August 28, 2026 12:37 PM ET

Eight years before COVID emerged, a journalist issued a prophetic warning that risky viral research could usher in “doomsday” and damage the reputation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Anthony Fauci groused in an email to an aide about that warning, then instructed the aide to permanently delete the exchange, documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation show.

The documents add to growing evidence that Fauci destroyed public records despite his sworn testimony that he never did. Deleting government records violates federal law.

Fauci did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2011, the advent of gain-of-function research — experiments that make viruses more infectious or deadly in the lab — caused its first major controversy. With funding from Fauci’s institute at the NIH, Dutch virologist Ron Fouchier had made an airborne strain of a bird flu with an estimated 50% fatality rate, which he described as “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make.”

Fauci and New York Times science writer Phil Boffey traded barbs in newspaper opinion pages about the work.

Manmade pandemic viruses are a “risk worth taking,” Fauci insisted in a December 2011 Washington Post editorial, because they could help drugmakers and public health get a jump start if they emerge in nature. NIH Director Francis Collins and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Vaccine Research Center Gary Nabel co-authored the op-ed.

The New York Times published an op-ed apparently written by Boffey in January 2012 arguing that NIH created an “engineered doomsday” that could kill “hundreds of millions of people.” The new emails reveal the author of the un-bylined op-ed for the first time.

“The consequences, should the virus escape, are too devastating to risk,” he said in an apparent reference to the title of Fauci’s op-ed.

Boffey wrote a follow-up in March 2012 titled “The Truth About the Doomsday Virus?” Under scrutiny from the press, Fouchier had backpedaled on his earlier statements about his virus’s lethality. Fauci meanwhile pushed to publish the Fouchier experiment despite biosecurity experts’ concerns the information could fall into the hands of a bioterrorist.

As the question marks suggests, Boffey was skeptical of Fouchier’s assurances. Experts who had read his initial description of the experiment said it stated the airborne virus remained as lethal as the natural one, he wrote.

One sentence really rattled Fauci: “Now, this country’s National Institutes of Health, which financed the research and has its own reputation on the line, is asking the [NSABB] to reconsider its call to redact details before publication.”

“Phil Boffey is really off base here,” Fauci wrote to Collins, on March 4, 2012. “He is acting like a mischievous guy.”

“Clearly, people are getting to Phil Boffey and he is swallowing it,” Fauci sounded off in a more candid email to a subordinate the next morning.

Fauci strongly opposed a recommendation from the NIH’s biosecurity advisors to not publish sensitive details about Fouchier’s experiment. He said that if the advisors did not change their recommendation “the field of research on influenza … has a serious problem.”

“Please delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file,” Fauci said on his NIH email in apparent violation of federal record-keeping laws.

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul highlighted two other instances of Fauci apparently seeking to delete public records in 2020, despite his sworn testimony before another committee in 2024 that he never did.

Fauci ultimately persuaded NIH’s biosecurity advisors to allow the Fouchier experiment to be published in full.

Boffey and Fouchier did not respond to a request for comment.

Fouchier And COVID’s Origins

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, Fouchier worked with Fauci and other virologists to downplay the possibility of a lab origin. Fouchier ghostwrote a key argument in “The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2,” a paper dismissing a possible lab origin of COVID. Fauci would frequently cite the paper and its authors over the years without revealing he collaborated with them behind-the-scenes.

Yet privately the paper’s authors described Fouchier as “unbelievably conflicted.”

“Ron … is not going to want it to be a GOF [gain-of-function] escape,” one author said.

Indeed, Fouchier said he didn’t supportpublicly addressing the possibility of a lab leak in the “Proximal Origin” paper.

Fouchier said that it could lead to “harm to science” through renewed debates about biosafety.

“This manuscript would be much stronger if it focused on the likelihood of the first two scenarios as compared to intentional or accidental release,” Fouchier said. “That would also limit the chance of new biosafety discussions that would unnecessarily obstruct future attempts of virus culturing for research and diagnostic purposes for any (emerging/zoonotic) virus.”

Caviar and Economics – Hamptons Yacht Club Cancels Restaurant Service After Staff Deported

August 29, 2026 | sundance |

A small sideline story that reflects a combination of sociological and economic facets. A Yacht Club in the Hamptons of New York is forced to cancel their restaurant services after their staff is removed from the USA due to immigration enforcement.

The larger picture is well worth discussing, because there is a large and inorganic part of the U.S. economy that will obviously be impacted by immigration enforcement and the removal of illegal or unauthorized workers. First, from the Hamptons:

NEW YORK – An ultra-exclusive Hamptons yacht club catering to the wealthy and well-connected was forced to suspend its members-only restaurant service for multiple days after several of its kitchen staff were booted from the country over visa issues, The Post has learned.

The swanky oceanfront Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett — which reportedly charges around $100,000 in initiation fees — canceled its Wednesday night dinner service after its foreign cooks had to leave the US because of problems renewing their H-2B temporary work visas, according to a letter sent to members the same day.

Food service was also canceled Thursday and was not expected to be back up and running until Friday’s lunch service, the club informed its deep-pocketed members — a group that once included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s parents.

[…] “It seems that an oversight either by the agent or attorney responsible for submitting our petition or perhaps by the US Immigration Office itself has resulted in a situation where our H2B kitchen staff must leave the country immediately and return to their home countries for at least 60 days before their visas can be renewed.” (read more)

Obviously, there is not a lot of sympathy for a bunch of elitists missing their Avocado toast and brunch options. However, if we stand back and think about the scale of economic activity impacted by a return to a nationally organic labor force, we accept there are going to be major ramifications to a variety of businesses across a broad spectrum of sectors.

Texas Governor Orders Halt to State Funding of Flock Cameras. 1/2

Bob Price29 Aug 2026

Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered all state agencies to stop funding local law enforcement Flock camera purchases and operations. The move comes shortly after the Texas Tribune announced an investigation into $30 million provided to local police departments for Flock cameras.

The order from the Texas governor came Thursday, shortly after an investigation published by the Texas Tribune came online. The investigation revealed that the State of Texas added a $1 fee to car insurance policies. That money was then distributed to local law enforcement agencies to help reduce catalytic converter thefts.

Texas funding led to the purchase of about 2,000 Flock Cameras by the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Board, the Tribune reported. The State funded an additional $15.9 million to Texas DPS to purchase an additional 1,200 cameras.

Abbott’s Communications Director, Andrew Mahaleris, told the Tribune, “To the extent that cities get any funding for those cameras, most of it comes from the federal government. To the extent any funding comes from Texas agencies, those agencies are clarifying that those funds cannot be used for Flock cameras.”

Despite their success in solving many crimes, including the kidnapping of children, the surveillance camera systems have come under massive scrutiny after concerns of abuse of civil liberties arose.

The Tribune reported that the number of Flock cameras purchased by the insurance policy fee may be on the low side, as they had difficulty obtaining complete information from agencies.

Many Texas legislators expressed concern about the excessive use of electronic surveillance through the AI-driven Flock system.

One legislator, State Representative Mitch Little (R-Lewisville), told the Tribune, “The sheer volume of information captured is not something that is entertained, in my view, by the Fourth Amendment.”

In an interview on Bloomberg’s Balance of Power,Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) expressed strong disapproval of the threat of over-surveillance posed by these systems. Cruz stated:

I’ll tell you what a Ted Cruz would make of it, which is I don’t like Flock cameras. I don’t like government surveillance, I don’t think the government should be surveilling innocent citizens. We should use law enforcement to go after criminals. But we have a presumption of innocence. And I think the surveillance state — China has built an espionage and surveillance state. I don’t want to see America the same way. I think these Flock cameras really invite abuse, and I’m hopeful the political process will constrain it.

State and local law enforcement praise the technology and its impact in solving or reducing crime. The Dallas Police Department’s Major Felony and Vehicle Recovery Division said the department uses hundreds of cameras to track suspects involved in violent offenses, hit-and-runs, and auto thefts. The clearance time for many of these crimes fell from days to hours, the department stated.

Texas DPS also reports the use of automatic pings to intercept stolen vehicles, fleeing felons, and human smuggling operations along major highway corridors.

Governor Greg Abbott’s abrupt freeze on state funding for Flock cameras highlights a growing collision between law enforcement technology and constitutional privacy rights in Texas. While police agencies credit the AI surveillance network with drastically cutting crime clearance times and recovering stolen property, the revelation of millions in state-funded grants—drawn from auto insurance fees—has catalyzed broad bipartisan pushback.

With state lawmakers questioning the program’s Fourth Amendment boundaries and Abbott shutting off the state spigot, local departments will likely face increased scrutiny and tighter legislative guardrails if they choose to continue funding these automated tracking networks using local or federal dollars.

Exclusive — Sam Nunberg: Democrats ‘Let Their Trump Derangement Syndrome’ Control Everything They Do

Elizabeth Weibel29 Aug 2026

Sam Nunberg, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, pointed out that the Democrat Party has “no idea how to not let their Trump Derangement Syndrome” control everything they do.

While speaking to host Matthew Boyle on Breitbart News Saturday, Nunberg spoke abouthow “the greatest thing to ever happen to the Republican Party” was the Democrat Party “playing defense and lying to the public” about former President Joe Biden.

“One of our problems, we as Republicans, when we had the Paul Ryan’s and the John Boehner’s, when President Trump was elected in 2016 and entered office in 2017, was we have no idea how to govern. But, the reality of the situation is that the Democrats have no idea how to not let their Trump Derangement Syndrome just control every action they do, and that will backfire,” Nunberg explained.

“At the end of the day, the greatest thing to ever happened to the Republican Party was the Democrats playing defense and lying to the public about Joe Biden,” he said.

“That is one of the reasons why the energy on their side is with the Communists and Islamists, and because they are just so furious because they had Biden pushed down their throats in 2020, saying, ‘Look, he’s the only candidate that’s going to be able to beat Trump.'”

Nunberg continued to warn that if the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives, they will impeach Trump for a third time.

“Now, will the Democrats impeach Donald Trump? Yes, they will. This idea that Jared Kushner can go talk to Hakeem Jeffries and have a sit down, and that they can start playing nice and figure out ways to work with each other, and maybe some of the President’s adviser’s will tell him, ‘Well, if you do some trades on liberal policies, then that’ll be good for your legacy,’ and the Democrats won’t do the impeachment, that’s just not the reality. That’s not the way life’s going to work.”

Exclusive – Interior Sec. Burgum Requests Changes to Smithsonian After Trump Admin Discovers DEI in Museums. 1/2

Olivia Rondeau28 Aug 2026

The Trump administration is moving to restore the Smithsonian Institution to its original mission of preserving the United States of America’s “precious cultural inheritance,” instead of advancing a “divisive, ideological agenda” with a new letter to the museum system’s Board of Regents.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum sent the letter on Friday, alerting the board that his department is working to execute President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, titled “Restoring Trust in the Smithsonian Institution.”

The publicly-funded museum system’s annual budget has been over $1 billion in recent years, with most of it coming from federal appropriations. However, the White House recently proposed an 11 percent funding cut to $961.3 million for fiscal year 2027. The submitted budget would be the lowest amount of taxpayer money the institution would receive since 2020.

The proposal came after a White House review of the Smithsonian’s programs, including the alleged advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agendas. The review culminated in a report sharing examples of troublesome exhibits in several different Smithsonian museums, with the administration arguing that they “focus excessively on oppression rather than American achievements.”

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, who made more than $4.4 million from his salary and benefits from 2020 to 2024, has explicitly stated that DEI “must be at the center” of the institution.

“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE,'” Trump wrote on Truth Social last week. “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”

He continued, “We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made. This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.”

Burgum wrote, “As outlined in Executive Order, titled ‘Restoring Trust in the Smithsonian Institution,’ the administration has concluded that action is necessary to restore the Smithsonian Institution (Smithsonian or Institution) to the mission originally entrusted to it by Congress and the American people.”

“As you are aware,it is the executive branch’s responsibility to ensure that taxpayer funds and the support the Smithsonianreceives from executive departments and agencies areused to preserve America’s precious cultural inheritance, not advance a divisive, ideological agenda,” the Interior secretary explained. “In 1846, Congress established the Smithsonian as a trust instrumentality of the United States and vested its governance in the Board of Regents. As an entity created to be the Nation’s foremost steward of American history and culture, the Smithsonian bears a responsibility to preserve and present the American story faithfully, accurately, coherently and in a manner worthy of the public trust.”

Burgum then reminded the Board of Regents that the aforementioned responsibility is “reinforced” by the more than $1 billion in taxpayer funding Congress provides each year.

Citing the White House’s report on the Smithsonian, Burgum stated that a “consistent pattern of leadership decisions,” including revisions to the mission statement of the National Museum of American History, have “decisively ‘reframed’ the museum away from presenting a coherent and accurate account of the American story and toward advancing an ideological agenda that seeks to transform both the Smithsonian and the country.”

The museum has also adopted a plan that tells employees to, “whatever the topic,” tie everything to “the core issues of our time, namely, “race and identity,” “gender and sexuality,” “environmental change,” immigration and migrations, “economic inequality,” “technological change” and “nationalism and globalism, stating that “To do anything less is to shirk our commitment to relevance.”

The White House report also found attempts to normalize illegal immigration by using a curriculum that instructs high school teachers to avoid terms like “illegal alien” and “illegal immigrant,” and museum exhibits presenting the view that males can transition to be female and should be allowed to play in women’s sports.

“Because these concerns arise from executive leadership and institutional ideology at the Smithsonian, the appropriate response must likewise address executive leadership and institutional ideology,” Burgum stated.

According to him, the ultimate effect of this “radical ideology” is to weaken the shared American identity and heritage.

Burgum then asked the Board of Regents to meet with him and his team in person as soon as possible to “determine how best to address the findings outlined in this letter and identified in the aforementioned report.”

“The Smithsonian belongs to the American people,” the secretary wrote in closing. “It exists to preserve and present ‘the inspiring story of the United States – its origins, struggles, development, traditions, strength’ – for this and future generations.”

Burgum’s letter concluded with, “The administration is committed to working with the Smithsonian to accomplish these objectives and to restore public trust in one of our Nation’s great institutions. We look forward to working together to achieve that goal.”

Wesleyan President: Students Would ‘Maybe Not’ Welcome Maher, But Would Give Him ‘Hearing’

On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” Wesleyan University President Michael Roth said that the show’s host, comedian Bill Maher would “maybe not” be welcomed at the school, but he would be “given a hearing.”

Maher asked, “Do you think I could come on campus and speak and be welcomed?”

Roth responded, “Welcomed, maybe not. But certainly…given a hearing.”

Maher then said, “Okay, but I shouldn’t be welcomed? Someone who twice gave the Democrats $1,000,000? That’s not enough credentials to come on?”

Roth responded by joking that he’d welcome Maher if he came to campus with a million dollars.

Roth added, “We had Justice Scalia come to campus, and there were certainly many people, oh my gosh, how could we bring him here? He gave a really good talk. He spent the day on campus talking with students, they argued with him, welcomed was probably the wrong word, but they enjoyed the debate. And that’s what we want. We want people to enjoy the debate.” Which Maher agreed with.
