Launch of the Roman Space Telescope

A new telescope has been launched into space to study the universe. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) has the same size main mirror as the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) but sees 100 times more sky during each snapshot. This is possible because when compared to HST, RST's main mirror is more curved, its secondary mirror is closer, and its main camera is larger. The result is that RST can inspect more of the sky more quickly, likely allowing, among other capabilities, the discovery of many more supernovas which tell us more about the expansion rate and composition of our universe, and many more planets orbiting other stars that tell us more about the possibilities for life elsewhere in the universe. RST will orbit the Sun, not the Earth, like the James Webb Space Telescope. The featured video shows Roman being launched yesterday from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

Residents across the Pacific Northwest report seeing a fireball Sunday evening

NASA Invites Media to Turkey Artemis Accords Signing Ceremony

Turkey will sign the Artemis Accords during a ceremony at 2:30 p.m. EDT Monday, Aug. 31, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, becoming the 71st country signatory.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will host Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır for the ceremony, together with U.S. Department of State officials.

This event is in person only. Media interested in attending must RSVP no later than 11 a.m. on Aug. 31, to: hq-media@mail.nasa.gov. NASA’s media accreditation policy is online.

In 2020, during the first Trump Administration, the United States, led by NASA and the State Department, joined with seven other founding nations to establish the Artemis Accords, responding to the growing interest in lunar activities by both governments and private companies.

The Artemis Accords introduced the first set of practical principles aimed at enhancing the safety, transparency, and coordination of civil space exploration on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Mike Pence Praises Trump’s ‘Golden Age’ of Space, Says President Is ‘Reviving’ American Leadership

Former Vice President Mike Pence praised President Donald Trump's space agenda, calling it a continuation of efforts to strengthen American leadership in space through Artemis, commercial spaceflight and the U.S. Space Force.

Pence Credits Trump's Space Agenda

On Saturday, Pence made the comments on X while sharing a clip of Trump speaking at a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) event.

"President @realDonaldTrump should be commended for reviving and sustaining American Leadership in Space," the former Vice President wrote.

He said the administration "returned American Astronauts to Space on American rockets, launched Artemis to Go Back to the Moon and Created the U.S. Space Force."

He added that the Trump administration "continues the quest to carry American Ideals and Leadership into Space," before concluding, "Well Done Mr. President."

Trump Declares 'Golden Age' For Space

In the shared clip, Trump declared that his administration had brought America's space program into a new era.

"As the world can see today under the Trump administration, we have brought back America's space program and came out of the dark age and it's now into the golden age," Trump said.

He also vowed that the U.S. would dominate the next phase of space exploration.

"Our nation will conquer and we will conquer indeed this vast frontier that we have before us," Trump said.

He added, "We will explore it, we will tame it and we will win it. We will always win."

Trump Expands US Space Push

On Friday, Trump signed an executive order to revive a U.S. Space Academy to train astronauts, engineers and scientists and address workforce shortages at NASA and the Space Force. The move came as he honored the Artemis II crew.

Earlier this month, Trump also backed a policy targeting more than 1,000 annual space launches and re-entries by 2030, while promoting commercial lunar and Mars missions. U.S. orbital launches rose from 19 in 2013 to 178 in 2025.

New Mexico Museum of Space History celebrates golden jubilee

New Mexico Museum of Space History celebrates its 50-year history in Alamogordo with an event on October 3, during which several groups will be inducted into the International Space History Hall of Fame, and an exhibit to tell the story of the museum opened earlier this month.

Brianna Buller, curator supervisor of the New Mexico Museum of Space History, spoke with KRWG's Susan Morée about the celebration.

Susan Morée:

Bri, I recently visited the New Mexico Space History Museum and I had so much fun playing with the interactive exhibits and I just really felt like a little kid again.

But tell us about this Golden Jubilee y'all have coming up.

Brianna Buller:

Yeah, so our 50th anniversary for the museum is happening October 3rd. The actual museum's 50th is October 5th, but because we wanted it on the weekend, we're moving it up a little bit to October 3rd.

And it's going to be kind of a dual event. One half of that is celebrating the legacy of the museum, and then the other half is inducting the newest class into the International Space Hall of Fame, which we are home to.

And during that part of the event, we are inducting five individuals and groups into that Hall of Fame.

Susan Morée:

And what else is going to happen during the Golden Jubilee? Is there a special exhibit?

Brianna Buller:

Yeah, so we just opened on August 8th, we just opened a brand new exhibit called To Build a Space Museum, and that exhibit is all about how we got our golden cube.

And I think that story is really interesting because in 1973, a former mayor of Alamogordo was watching a commercial for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

And then he just kind of had this epiphany of like, well, if you can have a baseball hall of fame, why can't you have a Space Hall of Fame? So then the next day he calls up all his friends, supporters.

Within three days, he had governor approval. And then within three years, you had the Space Museum.

Wow.

Brianna Buller:

So I think that timeline is never, ever going to happen again. And I think that just shows how loud the community was like, yes, we want this. Yes, we support this.

Let's do it, which I think is something that is wonderful to reflect on 50 years later, that that legacy has survived and that we still stand as a pillar for our community and are trying to give them, you know, those STEM services and also to help tell the story of not only space history but the pioneers that are even today helping to expand our knowledge of space exploration.

Susan Morée:

And the Space History Museum, it's beautiful and it's up on a big hill overlooking, you can see White Sands in the distance and it's just such a beautiful building. And the exhibits are just so much fun. I learned so much when I was there.

Brianna Buller:

Yes, yeah. And what's really exciting is in these next couple of years, we are going through a whole renovation of the museum. It's time, we're ready.

We're currently getting ready to shut down our fifth floor so that we can completely strip it down, you know, put brand new paint on the walls, brand new panels, bring in more interactives, bring in more exhibits and artifacts to help really just rejuvenate the story that we're trying to tell for the museum, which is really exciting. This first big exhibit that's coming, it's all based on archeoastronomy, so one of the central bases for that will be Chaco Canyon.

Susan Morée:

Okay, and is there anything else we should know about the Golden Jubilee?

Brianna Buller:

It's sure to be a wonderful night, full of celebration, to be surrounded by community and just to really just celebrate the last 50 and to look forward to the next 50.

As China-US space race heats up, Shanghai unveils space-computing hub

Songjiang is already a vital link in China’s satellite supply chain as home to SpaceSail, the low-Earth-orbit challenger to SpaceX’s Starlink

As China ramps up its efforts to build an orbital data ecosystem and counter the US in the commercial space race, Shanghai – home to several major domestic players – has kicked off an inaugural space-computing forum alongside a new industry hub.

The dedicated centre in the city’s southwestern Songjiang district, unveiled at the forum on Sunday, brought together aerospace developers, semiconductor makers, artificial intelligence specialists, cloud vendors, as well as researchers and investors to advance in-orbit data processing, local news outlet Shanghai Observer reported.

Space computing enables satellites to analyse data in orbit, reducing the need to transmit raw files back to ground stations and speeding up real-time intelligence.

More ambitious long-term plans envision orbital data centres powered by solar energy to ease pressure on land-based power grids.

Songjiang, which has made commercial space a focal point of its development guidelines, is already a vital link in China’s satellite supply chain.

The district is home to SpaceSail, the Shanghai government-backed firm building Qianfan – China’s main low-Earth-orbit challenger to US giant SpaceX’s Starlink.

Having launched over 200 satellites to date, SpaceSail aims to deploy a 15,000-satellite mega-constellation by the end of 2030.

By comparison, Starlink has placed over 11,000 satellites in orbit to date, serving customers across more than 150 countries and territories.

Songjiang is also home to satellite manufacturers including Gesi Aerospace and Xuntian Qianhe, as well as the Shanghai Aerospace Precision Machinery Research Institute.

Local officials valued Songjiang’s satellite-internet sector at 23 billion yuan (US$3.4 billion) in 2025, supported by more than 100 companies across the supply chain.

The area also hosts Shanghai’s only designated 6G industry zone, where 81 companies generated about 24 billion yuan in revenue last year, according to Chinese media reports.

Under a new action plan, Songjiang is targeting more than 5 billion yuan in sales from space-computing and related industries by 2030.

The initiative aligns directly with Beijing’s broader strategy to establish China as a major space power, an ambition highlighted for the first time in the country’s latest five-year plan.

The document listed satellite internet as key digital infrastructure to be built “ahead of demand”, calling for accelerated low-Earth-orbit constellation deployments and tighter integration of satellite, airborne and ground-based systems across communication, navigation, remote sensing and computing assets.

Other priorities include expanding commercial space manufacturing and launch capacity, alongside lunar and deep-space exploration.

China has logged important advances in reusable rocket technology this year, successfully recovering boosters via a sea-based net and land-based landing legs, milestones which are critical to driving down launch costs.

Shanghai is not alone in chasing the sector. In neighbouring Zhejiang province, state-backed research institute Zhejiang Lab is spearheading the Three-Body Computing Constellation – a satellite cluster designed to process data in space.

Media briefing: BepiColombo's next milestone towards Mercury

Rewatch the European Space Agency's 31 August 2026 online press briefing on the latest developments of the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission, Europe's and Japan's first mission to Mercury.

This briefing focused on the complexities of the separation of the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), scheduled for 3 September 2026, a critical milestone marking the start of BepiColombo’s Mercury arrival phase.

It also provided an overview of the operational challenges and milestones ahead, including Mercury orbit insertion in November 2026 and the separation of the two science orbiters (ESA's MPO and JAXA's Mio) in December 2026.

The briefing also provided an update on the mission’s status and explored the scientific opportunities that await as BepiColombo prepares to begin operations around Mercury.

The mission is a collaboration between ESA and JAXA, the latter providing the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio).

Russia moving towards resolving Ukraine conflict – Putin

Moscow is making every effort to end the hostilities as soon as possible, the Russian president told Indian PM Narendra Modi

Russia is actively seeking to end the Ukraine conflict, President Vladimir Putin told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan on Monday.

The two leaders discussed the Ukraine conflict among other issues, with the Indian prime minister calling for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing hostilities and urging the sides to “move in this direction.”

“Thank you, dear prime minister. That is the way we’re heading for,” the Russian president replied.

Moscow has repeatedly said that it is ready to resume Ukraine peace talks at any time, provided that they are focused on addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, including Ukraine’s plans to join NATO.

Russia insists that the conflict has its roots in the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev and subsequent attempts by the new Ukrainian government to suppress the rebellion in Donbass by force.

Ukraine later failed to implement the 2014-2015 Minsk agreements, which were intended to reintegrate the breakaway regions into Ukraine by granting them broad autonomy through comprehensive political reform.

In a June article for Politico, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow had explored every diplomatic avenue to defuse the Ukraine and Europe security crisis, but the US and NATO rejected Russia’s proposal for legally binding mutual security guarantees in January 2022.

Kiev’s Western backers also sabotaged the Istanbul talks between Russia and Ukraine that were launched soon after the Ukraine conflict escalation in February 2022.

Then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson infamously traveled to Kiev in April of that year to tell Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky to drop any negotiations and “just fight,” thus slamming the door on any genuine diplomacy in the short term, according to Lavrov.

Moscow has consistently stated that it hopes to achieve a lasting settlement to the conflict and not simply a temporary ceasefire.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine abandon its plans to join NATO and adopt a neutral status, accept restrictions on its armed forces, and formally recognize Crimea and four former Ukrainian regions as Russian territory.

Russia also presented a roadmap towards the final settlement, which involved a ceasefire along the current front line linked to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from parts of Russian territory they control, an end to mobilization, and an end to Western military aid to Ukraine.

Kiev has repeatedly rejected any proposals put forward by Moscow, while continuing to claim sovereignty over the four former Ukrainian territories as well as Crimea.

Kyiv Endures Unprecedented 5-Day Drone Blitz as Russia Alters Tactics

A blast at an arms depot near Kyiv has killed 38, while two children were also among those killed in the wider barrage.

Russia has subjected Kyiv and the surrounding region to five straight days of relentless drone attacks, unleashing hundreds of drones and increasingly deploying faster, jet-powered variants that are putting Ukraine’s air defenses under growing pressure.

The barrage has killed at least 38 people in Kyiv and the Kyiv region and repeatedly disrupted life across the capital, with prolonged air-raid alerts forcing residents into shelters and businesses, transport services and other civilian infrastructure to shut down.

38 killed in arms depot blast

The deadliest incident occurred late Friday, Aug. 28, in Myla, west of Kyiv, where a Russian strike hit a Ukrainian military depot storing ammunition, drones and explosives.

The strike triggered a massive explosion and fire, followed by secondary detonations that sent flames and debris across the surrounding area.

The death toll has risen to 38, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday. Another 20 people were injured and four remained missing.

Emergency crews extinguished most of the fires, while bomb-disposal teams were clearing unexploded ordnance and other dangerous debris from the site.

Zelensky said the area had been significantly contaminated by the blast and announced that Ukrainian prosecutors had opened a criminal negligence investigation.

The incident has also triggered anger over the continued storage of large quantities of ammunition and explosives near residential areas.

It was the second major incident involving a munitions depot near Kyiv in less than two months.

On July 6, a Russian Iskander ballistic missile struck an ammunition warehouse operated by a defense-industry company in Vyshneve, west of Kyiv, triggering hours of secondary detonations that killed nine people and damaged hundreds of homes.

Ukrainian investigators later found that ammunition had been stored near residential buildings in violation of safety requirements, leading to criminal proceedings and the detention of two company executives.

Children among those killed

On Aug. 29, a two-year-old girl was killed by debris from a downed Russian drone in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi District. Eight people were injured in drone attacks across the capital that day.

A 14-year-old girl was also killed in a separate Russian drone strike in Kyiv region’s Boryspil District.

Russia unleashes faster drones

The attacks have also highlighted a shift in Russia’s aerial tactics.

Moscow has increasingly combined traditional Shahed-type drones with jet-powered variants capable of flying at much higher speeds, as well as Gerbera attack drones and Parodiya decoys designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses.

Ukrainian military experts say Russia is rushing some of the new drones directly from production lines into combat.

Their higher speeds make them harder targets for Ukraine’s traditional mobile fire groups, increasing pressure on air-defense systems and combat aviation.

Overnight into Aug. 31, Ukrainian forces said they intercepted 96 of 121 Russian drones launched against Ukraine.

But the sheer volume and frequency of the attacks are creating another challenge: keeping Kyiv under repeated alerts for hours at a time.

Daylight attacks paralyze Kyiv

Russia has also shifted toward rolling daytime drone waves, extending the disruption beyond the traditional overnight attack window.

On Monday morning, Kyiv entered its fifth consecutive day of being under a drone blitz as another Russian drone wave approached the capital.

Falling drone debris sparked a major fire at an ATB supermarket warehouse in Kyiv’s Desnianskyi District.

Other strikes and debris impacts were reported across the city.

In Obolon, a drone hit a 12-story residential building, setting the second to the fifth floor ablaze.

In Holosiivskyi District, debris severely damaged the façade of a two-story café. Drone fragments also struck residential areas and non-residential infrastructure in Pecherskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

The repeated attacks are increasingly disrupting Kyiv’s economy and daily routines, affecting public transport, businesses, deliveries and other services.

Ukraine scrambles for new interceptors

The escalating drone campaign is also accelerating Ukraine’s push for cheaper ways to defend the capital.

The military is rushing the testing and deployment of domestic interceptor drones designed to hunt down and destroy Russia’s increasingly fast unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The approach could help Ukraine conserve expensive surface-to-air missiles while countering Moscow’s growing drone production and increasingly sophisticated attack tactics.

When the IDF announced that it had appointed Lt.-Cmdr. R to be the first-ever female boat commander in February, she had already broken a new glass ceiling in the navy, but it appears that her trajectory is set for cracking even higher levels.

In recent years, the navy has seen an increase in female sailors and officers, but in February, R became the navy's most prominent new female representative.

According to the IDF, the missile boat in question was expected to be at the forefront of naval combat operations.

The US military said on Monday that no ships had hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and that Iran's claim that a supertanker struck two mines in the area was false.

CLAIM: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims that a supertanker passing through the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz struck two mines and was brought to a complete stop. This is FALSE.

Trump declares Iran ‘officially a failed nation’ after renewed US strikes

US President Donald Trump claimed that “Iran is officially a Failed Nation” in a Monday post on Truth Social, the day after the US struck Iranian military assets for the first time in weeks.

“They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no currency, they are not paying their soldiers or police, Inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country,” Trump added.

He continued to claim that the only thing Tehran still has is “fake news from the USA,” a willingness to kill anti-regime protestors, and “a good line of b**t.”

In reference to the killing of anti-regime protestors, Trump claimed that over 100,000 have been killed and asserted that the regime in Tehran must be tried for war crimes.

Hezbollah shifts to guerrilla warfare, drone strikes as terror group prepares for prolonged war

The IDF has encountered several individual Hezbollah operatives in the area over the past several months, which the Alma center said supports the possibility of a continued Hezbollah presence.

Hezbollah has continued to invest in its recovery and adapt its strategy for what it anticipates could be a prolonged, low-intensity war with Israel, according to the latest assessment by the Alma Research and Education Center, published on Sunday.

Based on incidents recorded over the past several months, the center assessed that Hezbollah could increasingly turn toward guerrilla warfare, including small-scale infiltrations into the security zone and potentially Israeli territory, as well as drone and explosive attacks.

The group’s ability to carry out its previous plans to seize the Galilee has been significantly diminished by the destruction of its infrastructure and the continued presence of the IDF in southern Lebanon, the center assessed. However, Hezbollah is still likely to attempt to operate within the security zone.

Given the limited scope of such operations, Hezbollah infiltration attempts would likely be thwarted, according to the center.

Protest marking anniversary of 'Beautiful Six' hostages' deaths held at Prime Minister's Residence

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum announced the deaths of "The Beautiful Six" shortly following their murder at the hands of Hamas terrorists in August 2024.

Activists from the Women Demand Life movement demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem on Monday to mark the two-year anniversary of the return of "The Beautiful Six," referring to the repatriation of six Gaza hostages' bodies to Israel.

The returned bodies belong to Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov, and Ori Danino, all of whom were murdered by Hamas in the Gaza Strip in August 2024 after being kidnapped during the October 7 massacre.

“We won’t forget; they could have returned alive,” read a large sign displayed by the protesters.

What's next for Syria's economy as US removes nation from state terror list? - analysis

The more important question is no longer whether the designation has been lifted, but whether its removal will translate into banks willing to deal with Syria.

British activist remains in Israeli custody over suspected minor assault during West Bank clash

A British activist remained in Israeli police custody Sunday on suspicion of indecently assaulting a minor during an incident in the southern West Bank village of Umm al-Kheir, where the activist said he had been trying to protect a Palestinian from violence.

Finn Joughin was detained Saturday after an encounter involving a child in Umm al-Kheir. Police said late Saturday that he was being held “on suspicion of performing an indecent act against a minor.”

Video from the incident shows Joughin gripping a fence while pressing his body against a child, apparently to prevent the child from passing through. Joughin had been volunteering in the village in what was described as an effort to protect Palestinians from settler attacks.

Achilles Shield: Israel, Greece sign over NIS 10b. air defense deal against Turkey, Iran

Israel and Greece signed a defense deal worth over NIS 10 billion ($3.48 billion), under which Israel would build a "multi-layered" defense system for Greece, the Defense Ministry announced in a Monday statement.

The statement said a supplementary deal valued at 26 million euros would see Israel sell Greece drone dome systems.

The agreement, negotiated over three years, will become the largest defense export deal in Israel’s history.
