Iran crude exports through Hormuz stall for first time on record - Reuters

Iran has gone about seven weeks without shipping significant crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz for the first time on record, as a US naval blockade cuts off one of Tehran’s main sources of foreign-currency earnings, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Since the United States reinstated its blockade on July 14, no Iranian crude cargoes have successfully passed through the strait to China, Tehran’s only major remaining oil customer, the Reuters report said, citing data from Kpler, Vortexa and TankerTrackers.com.

 

Trump dismisses Iran deal after Tehran pushes return to Islamabad memorandum

Hours after Tehran called on Washington to return to the Islamabad memorandum, President Donald Trump dismissed the value of any agreement with Iran, ordered massive strikes on southern Iran and threatened an even larger attack if Tehran retaliates.

 

Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he had given Iran “a lot of chances” and said he had little faith in any agreement with Tehran.

 

“I think an agreement with them isn't worth the paper it's written on. We gave them a lot of chances,” Fox News quoted him as saying.

 

His remarks came as President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would respond immediately if the United States returned to its commitments under the June agreement, reinforcing Tehran’s position that the memorandum remains the principal route back to diplomacy.

 

However, Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf struck a harder tone in a video message the same day, saying Iran’s policy, based on Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s directive, was to secure implementation of the memorandum’s conditions.

 

“If the United States does not fulfill its commitments, we will force it to do so through the language of power,” Ghalibaf said.

 

He said the Strait of Hormuz would not reopen until Washington implemented its obligations under the agreement and described forcing the United States to comply as what would become its “third defeat.”

Ghalibaf also warned that Iran would respond militarily if Washington intensified its maritime blockade.

 

“If the enemy intends to prevent Iran from exporting oil from the Persian Gulf, it should know that no one else will be able to export oil from this region either,” he said.

“When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions” about trade, Carney said in Ottawa.

 

“But look, it’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy.”

 

Carney also said, “It’s beneath their office,” when asked about Trump Cabinet secretaries insulting the Canadian military.

 

The prime minister’s comments came a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mocked Canada and its military during an interview with CNBC at the meeting of G20 finance ministers in Asheville, North Carolina.

 

Asked during that interview about markets wondering if the United States is in a “tit-for-tat trade war with Canada,” Bessent replied, “Well, I don’t think you can be in a tit-for-tat with someone who’s 13 times larger than you are.”

 

“I think this is very unfortunate that Prime Minister Carney has turned this into … a political shouting match,” Bessent said.

On Monday night, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X a message with a Canadian flag emoji and the words ”(this is real)” above a photo of a female cadet receiving a medal at the Vernon Cadet Training Center from a female instructor. The training center is for Canadian youths.

 

The tweet was widely perceived by users who replied to this post as Hegseth body-shaming the instructor.

 

“Wow. The Secretary of Defence is body shaming cadet groups. A youth group. This is not a military unit. They are kids looking for adventure, test themselves and align themselves with the values of service,” wrote X user Danny O’Reagan, who identified himself as a Canadian military veteran. “Don’t be a Pete.”

 

U.S. and Canadian officials have engaged in a war of words since late August, when trade talks between the two nations collapsed.

 

The U.S. on Aug. 22 slapped tariffs of 50% on some Canadian imports worth $20 billion.

 

Three days later, Canada said it would tariff more than 700 types of U.S. goods at rates ranging from 15% to 50% in what it called a “dollar for dollar” match on the U.S. duties. Those retaliatory tariffs are set to take effect on Sept. 8.
