Devin is an autonomous AI software engineer built byCognition AI(founded 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan), announced on March 12, 2024 as the "first AI software engineer." Given a natural-language task, it plans, writes, tests, debugs, and deploys code in a sandboxed cloud environment — with its own shell, code editor, and web browser — and returns a finished pull request for human review.
At launch it set a new SWE-bench state of the art (13.86% end-to-end issue resolution vs. 1.96% prior).
Devin 2.2 adds a full Linux desktop for testing, self-reviewing PRs ("Devin Review"), video-recorded QA sessions, and ~3× faster startup.
It's deployed at enterprises like Goldman Sachs (its "first AI employee") and Citigroup; pricing starts around $20/month.
Cognition also makes the Windsurf IDE, and in May 2026 raised over $1 billion at a ~$25 billion valuation.
