All Christian schools in Jerusalem shut after Israel refuses entry to Palestinian teachers

Israeli authorities have reportedly not renewed access permits required for educational staff to enter the Holy City

Christian schools in Jerusalem have been forced to indefinitely delay the start of the new academic year after Israeli authorities failed to renew entry permits for more than 70 teachers and staff living in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians holding West Bank IDs generally require Israeli-issued permits to cross checkpoints into East Jerusalem. But Israeli authorities failed to renew entry permits for more than 70 teachers and staff “suddenly and without prior notice,” the General Secretariat for Christian Educational Institutions in Jerusalem said in a press statement shared with the media on Monday.

“Accordingly… it has been decided to suspend school attendance in the schools of the city of Jerusalem beginning Tuesday morning, 1 September 2026, until the necessary permits for teachers and staff are reissued and renewed,” the Secretariat said.

The schools said they were committed to protecting their students’ right to education, but the situation “makes it impossible to ensure a safe and stable start” to the academic year.

The dispute comes amid wider concerns about the treatment of Palestinians and Christians in Israel and the occupied territories.

In early August, Democratic US Senator Chris Van Hollen demanded the resignation of US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, accusing him of failing to protect American citizens and interests and criticizing his response to mounting violence in the West Bank, including attacks on Palestinian Christian communities.

There have also been several high-profile anti-Christian incidents involving Israeli soldiers.

In April, an IDF soldier was filmed smashing a Jesus statue with a sledgehammer in the Lebanese town of Dibil while another soldier photographed the act, as Israeli forces occupied the surrounding area. The incident triggered a global scandal and prompted a military investigation. The two soldiers were removed from combat duty and sentenced to 30 days in military detention.

Christian churches, clergy and nuns in Jerusalem have also faced harassment. Six religious Jews, five of them minors, were arrested after spitting and banging on the entrance to the St. James Monastery in the city’s Armenian Quarter and throwing stones at the compound wall in early August. This came just months after an Israeli man violently assaulted a French nun on Mount Zion, leaving her with a head injury.

Members of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in the Holy City have told RT that they too had faced attacks, including nuns being pelted with stones. “It’s not just to throw to scare a person, it was such a blow to defeat,” the Mission’s Sister Elizaveta told RT.

According to the Religious Freedom Data Center (RFDC), a Jewish-Israeli watchdog organization, reported anti-Christian harassment more than doubled in the second quarter of 2026, with spitting attacks accounting for the majority of cases.

Katz: Israel will facilitate emigration from Gaza ‘by any means’ as soon as Trump allows

Defense minister claims 80% of Palestinians want to leave Gaza, but nobody will take them; PM visits IDF post in Strip, says Israel won’t withdraw from territory it currently holds

Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that plans to facilitate the mass emigration of Palestinians from Gaza remain under discussion and were merely “frozen” by US President Donald Trump, not taken off the table entirely.

He discussed the plans, saying Israel would facilitate emigration “by any means,” at a conference hosted by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, at the same time as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid a visit to an IDF outpost inside the Gaza Strip and reaffirmed that Israel had no plans to withdraw.

Katz, in a recorded clip from the conference, claimed that some “80 percent [of Gazans] want to emigrate,” citing unspecified surveys Israel has conducted, but that the unwillingness of other countries to take them in is a roadblock to implementing this.

“There is no real solution for Gaza in the end without this migration,” Katz insisted. “Hamas isn’t allowing them [to leave], and there are no countries in the world taking them in. President Trump put the issue on the agenda. Now every country needs to take people in — and that’s the big issue.”

Should other countries be open to taking in Gazans, Katz said the Israeli government “is organized and prepared to get them out — by sea, by air, by every way possible.”

Mike Rogers, who sought to distance himself from AIPAC a week ago, assures the Republican Jewish Coalition that he will "unconditionally" support Israel's "right to defend itself."

Unconditional aid is even more extreme than current policy, which requires that some of said aid be spent in America.
