A flat granite explanatory tablet sat on the ground west of the main standing stones. It described the monument's dimensions, astronomical alignments, and the eight languages carved on the pillars. One section read:
"Time Capsule: Placed Six Feet Below This Spot On [blank] To Be Opened On [blank]"
The two date fields were never filled in, which made it unclear from the start whether a capsule had actually been buried. The tablet itself was not installed when the Georgia Guidestones were unveiled in March 1980; according to Chris Kubas, executive vice president of the Elberton Granite Association, the marker was placed at the site in 1982, two years later. It also included directions to the Elberton Granite Museum, which didn't exist until 1982 — further evidence it was a later addition.
